Sexual dimorphism in gut microbiota dictates therapeutic efficacy of intravenous immunoglobulin on radiotherapy complications.

INTRODUCTION: With the mounting number of cancer survivors, the complications following cancer treatment become novel conundrums and starve for countermeasures. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is a purified preparation for immune-deficient and autoimmune conditions. OBJECTIVES: Here, we investigated whether IVIg could be employed to fight against radiation injuries and explored the underlying mechanism. METHODS: Hematopoietic or gastrointestinal (GI) tract toxicity was induced by total body or abdominal local irradiation. High-throughput sequencing was performed to analyze the gut microbio…

Pediatric Spinal Imaging: Using Tools Wisely.

Spinal injuries in children are a clinical challenge for emergency medicine providers. On one hand, spinal injuries are relatively rare and children are at an increased risk for an oncologic process after radiation exposure. On the other hand, spinal injuries can cause significant morbidity and mortality. A thorough history and physical examination can help risk-stratify imaging assessment to detect serious injury. This evidence-based, state-of-the art review will help clinicians understand best practices in imaging decision making for cervical and thoracolumbar spinal injuries in children.

The potential of mesenchymal stem cells in the management of radiation enteropathy.

Although radiotherapy is effective in managing abdominal and pelvic malignant tumors, radiation enteropathy is still unavoidable. This disease severely affects the quality of life of cancer patients due to some refractory lesions, such as intestinal ischemia, mucositis, ulcer, necrosis or even perforation. Current drugs or prevailing therapies are committed to alleviating the symptoms induced by above lesions. But the efficacies achieved by these interventions are still not satisfactory, because the milieus for tissue regeneration are not distinctly improved. In recent years, regenerative ther

Genitourinary Considerations in Reoperative and Complex Colorectal Surgery.

Genitourinary structures are at risk of injury during colorectal surgery. The incidence of injury is low; however, the risk is higher in cases involving severe inflammatory or infectious processes, locally advanced or recurrent cancer, previous radiation, and reoperation. Consideration of the anatomical relationship between the genitourinary system, and the colon and rectum is crucial to avoid injuries. Intraoperative diagnostic techniques such as intravenous pyelogram (IVP), fluoroscopic cystogram, or retrograde urethrogram can aid in identifying suspected injuries. Early recognition and repa

[Combined radiation exposures and their immediate and late sequelae].

The author reviews correlations between the general and local processes and criteria for the diagnosis of acute radiation sickness (acute radiation syndrome) /ARS/ as well as other clinical sequels of radiation injury (radiation burns, abnormalities of critical organ function, stochastic sequels) induced by total even and uneven radiation and concomitant radiation effects. Based on the own observations the coefficients were defined of private correlations of the doses of the total gamma- and high-absorbable ("soft") components of concomitant radiation effects on the content of neutrophil leuko

The role of musculoskeletal radiologists in emergency and trauma settings: current and emerging imaging modalities.

MSK radiologists play a critical role in emergency and trauma settings, where rapid and accurate imaging interpretation is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment. The increasing complexity of trauma cases has driven the adoption of advanced imaging modalities beyond conventional radiographs and computed tomography (CT). Dual-energy CT (DECT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have revolutionized MSK imaging, offering superior tissue characterization and improved detection of occult fractures, bone marrow edema (BME), infections, and soft tissue injuries. Emerging technologies, such as

A radiobiological review on melatonin: a novel radioprotector.

In spite of the fact that radiotherapy is a common and effective tool for cancer treatment; the radio sensitivity of normal tissues adjacent to the tumor which are unavoidably exposed to radiation limits therapeutic gain. For the sake of improvement in radiation therapy, radiobiology- the study of the action of ionizing radiation on living things- plays a crucial role through explaining observed phenomena, and suggesting improvements to existing therapies. Due to the damaging effects of ionizing radiation, radiobiologists have long been interested in identifying novel, nontoxic, effective, and

IPW-5371 mitigates the delayed effects of acute radiation exposure in WAG/RijCmcr rats when started 15 days after PBI with bone marrow sparing.

PURPOSE: To test IPW-5371 for the mitigation of the delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE). Survivors of acute radiation exposure are at risk for developing delayed multi-organ toxicities; however, there are no FDA-approved medical countermeasures (MCM) to mitigate DEARE. METHODS: WAG/RijCmcr female rat model of partial-body irradiation (PBI), by shielding part of one hind leg, was used to test IPW-5371 (7 and 20 mg kg-1 d-1) for mitigation of lung and kidney DEARE when started 15 d after PBI. Rats were fed known amounts of IPW-5371 using a syringe, instead of delivery by daily o

Advances of gas molecules against radiation damage.

There is an increasing population receiving radiotherapy every year, during which unexpected damage to normal tissues often occurs unavoidably. How to mitigate the radiation-induced injuries and enhance patients' life quality remains a pressing challenge. Recently, gas molecules employment has emerged as a novel therapeutic modality, garnering increasing interest from researchers. These gas molecules possess distinct biological properties and can confer radioprotective benefits through various mechanisms, including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, microbiome regulation and anti-apoptosis. [The diagnosis, clinical picture and treatment of acute radiation sickness in the victims of the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station. II. Non-bone marrow syndromes of radiation lesions and their treatment].

Out of 115 victims to the breakdown, 56 persons had radiation burns, 17 the intestinal syndrome, 80 the oropharyngeal syndrome, and 7 interstitial radiation pneumonitis. In the lethal outcome, of crucial importance were radiation burns (over 40% of the body surface) (19 persons) and radiation pneumonitis (7 persons). The grave intestinal and oropharyngeal syndromes were accompanied by other fatal manifestations of radiation injuries. Hemoperfusion, plasmapheresis, continuous heparinization and administration of freshly frozen plasma did not bring about any improvement. The local use of differe…

Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDS): Implications for Safety.

Since the original ICNIRP Statement was published in 2000, there have been significant improvements in the efficiency and radiance (i.e., optical radiation emission) of LEDs. The most important improvement is the development of 'white' LEDs that can be used as general lighting sources, which are more efficient than traditional lighting sources. LEDs emitting in the ultraviolet wavelength region have also become available and have made their way into consumer products. All these changes have led to a rise in concern for the safety of the optical radiation emissions from LEDs. Several in vitro a
