Systematic review and meta-analysis of constraint-induced movement therapy in the hemiparetic upper extremity more than six months post stroke.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available evidence on the effectiveness of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in the hemiparetic upper extremity (UE) among individuals who were more than 6 months post stroke. METHODS: A literature search of multiple databases (PubMed, CINAHL, and EMBASE) was conducted to identify articles published in the English language up to and including July 2012. Studies were included for review if (1) ≥50% of the sample had sustained a stroke, (2) the research design was a randomized controlled trial (RCT), (3) the mean time s

An antiprogestin, CDB4124, blocks progesterone's attenuation of the negative effects of a mild stress on sexual behavior.

These experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that a progesterone receptor antagonist would block progesterone's ability to reduce the negative effects of a 5 min restraint on female rat sexual behavior. Ovariectomized Fischer rats were injected with 10 μg estradiol benzoate. Two days later, rats were injected subcutaneously (sc) with the progesterone receptor antagonist, CDB4124 (17α-acetoxy-21-methoxy-11β-[4-N,N-dimethyaminopheny]-19-norpregna-4,9-dione-3,20-dione) (60 mg/kg), or vehicle (20% DMSO+propylene glycol). One hour later, rats were injected sc with 500 μg progesterone or v

Safety and efficacy of spica casts for immobilization following initial bladder closure in classic bladder exstrophy.

OBJECTIVES: Pelvic immobilization constitutes a necessary component of successful bladder exstrophy closure. The efficacy of spica cast immobilization has been reported as markedly inferior to external fixation, with success rates below 25%. We reviewed our experience with spica cast immobilization following bladder closure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed classic bladder exstrophy patients undergoing bladder closure with spica cast immobilization. Success of bladder closure and complications related to immobilization were noted, as were age, type of closure, use of osteotom

Rocket "Eruca sativa": a salad herb with potential gastric anti-ulcer activity.

AIM: To validate gastric anti-ulcer properties of Rocket "Eruca sativa" on experimentally-induced gastric secretion and ulceration in albino rats. METHODS: Gastric acid secretion studies were undertaken using pylorus-ligated rats. Gastric lesions in the rats were induced by noxious chemicals including ethanol, strong alkalis, indomethacin and hypothermic restraint stress. The levels of gastric wall mucus (GWM), nonprotein sulfhydryls (NP-SH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were also measured in the glandular stomach of rats following ethanol administration. The gastric tissue was also examined hist

[An unusual hospitalization under constraint].

The case report describes a 45-year old man presenting of the behavioral problems and an aphasia of Wernicke, hospitalized under constraint. The urinary screening in the search of psychotropic substances is positive for the cannabis and the amphetamines. The neurological localization is confirmed by cerebral CT-scan. The discussion relates on the differential diagnosis between a schizophasia and an aphasia of Wernicke, on the difficulty of a somatic diagnosis among patients agitated under the effect of a drug and to the tendency to hospitalize those too quickly under constraint, on the noxious

Mild restraint reduces the time hormonally primed rats spend with sexually active males.

The effect of 5 min of restraint on the time sexually-receptive females spend in the compartment of a sexually active male was examined. Ovariectomized females, hormonally primed with 10 microg estradiol benzoate and 500 microg progesterone (EP) or primed only with estradiol benzoate (EO) were used. After the restraint or home-cage experience, females were tested for 30 min in a chamber that allowed the female to escape to a small "burrow". Females, subjected to restraint, left the male's compartment faster and spent significantly less time in the male's compartment than did non-restrained fem

Different stress modalities result in distinct steroid hormone responses by male rats.

Since both paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) and stress alter male reproductive function, the purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of PSD and other stressors (restraint, electrical footshock, cold and forced swimming, N = 10 per group) on steroid hormones in adult Wistar male rats. Rats were submitted to chronic stress for four days. The stressors (footshock, cold and forced swimming) were applied twice a day, for periods of 1 h at 9:00 and 16:00 h. Restrained animals were maintained in plastic cylinders for 22 h/day whereas PSD was continuous. Hormone determination was

Estrogen and progesterone dose-dependently reduce disruptive effects of restraint on lordosis behavior.

Ovariectomized rats were hormonally primed with various doses of estradiol benzoate (EB; 0.5-10 microg) in combination with various doses of progesterone (2.5-500 microg) to induce sexual receptivity. Females were then subjected to 5 min restraint and the effect on lordosis behavior was monitored for the next 30 min. Such mild stress has been previously shown to transiently reduce lordosis behavior of ovariectomized females hormonally primed only with 10 microg EB. In the current study, doses of progesterone of 25 microg or more in combination with 10 microg EB reduced the effects of restraint

Partial reversal of stress-induced behavioral sensitization to amphetamine following metyrapone treatment.

Several studies indicate that blockade of stress-induced corticosterone secretion prevents the development of stress-induced sensitization to the behavioral effects of stimulants. The present study examined whether chronic blockade of corticosterone synthesis with metyrapone could reverse stress-induced amphetamine sensitization in rats. Restraint stress in cylindrical chambers, 2 times 30 min/day for 5 days over an 8-day schedule, was used as the stressor. Following completion of the stress protocol, animals were cannulated with microdialysis guide cannulae over the nucleus accumbens, and the

The influence of restraint on blood pressure in the rat.

We examined the influence of procedures used in blood pressure measurement on blood pressure and the effects of antihypertensive agents. Subjects were spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and their Wistar/Kyoto (WKY) controls. Blood pressure was recorded by telemetry. Twenty-four h baseline pressure were measured, and the effect of minor handling on blood pressure and heart rate was examined. The influence of restraint such as is used for tail-cuff blood pressures was examined. The effects of three different antihypertensive drugs was also examined in the SHR. In the home-cage environment, th

Stress- and yohimbine-induced release of cholecystokinin in the frontal cortex of the freely moving rat: prevention by diazepam but not ondansetron.

The in vivo release of cholecystokinin (CCK)-like material (CCKLM) was measured in the frontal cortex of freely moving rats using the microdialysis technique combined with a sensitive radioimmunoassay. Local perfusion of K+ (100 mM)-enriched artificial CSF resulted in a 10-fold increase in CCKLM outflow, as compared with that occurring under basal resting (K+ = 3.0 mM) conditions, and this effect could be completely prevented by removal of Ca2+ in the perfusing fluid. Chromatographic analyses demonstrated that CCK-8S contributed to 70% of CCKLM. Stressful stimuli such as a 2-min exposure to di

Induction of the c-fos proto-oncogene in the rat pineal gland during stress.

To investigate the effects of stressful stimuli on pineal gland activity, male Wistar albino rats (200-250 g, 2-4 per group) were submitted to 30 min of forced immobilization or to unilateral vibrissotomy 30 min before sacrifice. In situ hybridization was performed with a 35S-labelled 50-base oligonucleotide probe complementary to nucleotides 270-319 of rat c-fos on sections containing the pineal gland. Autoradiograms were quantified using a JAVA microdensitometer. Stressful stimuli induced a significant increase in the expression of c-fos mRNA in the pineal gland (restraint = 144.3 +/- 14.4 c

Renal blood flow varies during normal activity in conscious unrestrained rats.

The extent to which renal blood flow (RBF) varied during normal daily activity and its dependence on renal nerve activity were studied in unrestrained rats. RBF (measured with a pulsed Doppler flow probe) and behavior pattern (observed with a video camera) were recorded during both phases of the light-dark cycle (n = 11). RBF was highest (100%) when the rat was fully relaxed and apparently asleep (9% time) but was significantly lower (P less than 0.01) during the remainder of the time. When quiescent but not fully relaxed, RBF was 89.7 +/- 0.3% of the maximum; when alert and completely still,

Effect of parathyroid hormone, centrally or peripherally injected, on gastric activity in male rats.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) injected peripherally did not interfere with the development of experimental ulcers. Conversely, when PTH was administered i.c.v. the development of ulcers was significantly inhibited. The gastric secretory volume and acid output were also reduced. The possibility is discussed that this antisecretory activity of PTH may be due to a direct effect at the CNS level.

Body temperature dependent decrease of gastric blood flow in restraint and water-immersion stressed rats.

The effects of restraint and water-immersion stress (RWIS) on the cardiovascular system (including blood pressure, heart rate, blood flow in the gastric region, and blood flow in the common carotid artery and descending aorta) and body temperature were studied in rats. The blood pressure of RWIS rats did not differ from that of restraint stress (RS) rats. The heart rate, blood flow in the gastric region, common carotid artery and descending aorta as well as body temperature were significantly decreased by RWIS, but not by RS. The decrease in heart rate in RWIS rats was not influenced by pretre

Neurogenic hypertension: etiology and surgical treatment. II. Observations in an experimental nonhuman primate model.

In a companion paper (Ann Surg 1985; 201(3):391-398), clinical data which suggest that neurogenic hypertension may be caused by arterial compression of the left medulla oblongata was presented. A chronic pathophysiologic animal model of neurogenic hypertension using a substitute for arterial pulsation, the neurovascular compression simulator (NCS), was developed. This paper presents data that demonstrate how development of hypertension in a nonhuman primate baboon (5 subject animals, 5 control animals) can be caused by the NCS, and the blood pressure can subsequently return to normal following

Inhibition of restraint stress by systemic (Asu1,7) eel-calcitonin.

The effects of different doses of (Asu1,7) eel-calcitonin, iv injected, on gastric secretion were studied in conscious rats with pyloric occlusion. Moreover, we evaluated the activity of this analogue on gastric ulcer formation by restraint stress. It was found that 2.5 or 5 Ul/kg (Asu1,7) eel-calcitonin decreased gastric acid secretion and inhibited the development of stress-induced ulcers in rats. In the isolated rat stomach the peptide at the concentrations of 1 nM to 1 microM did not modify acetylcholine, histamine or 5-hydroxytriptamine-induced contractions. These results suggest that thi

Suppression of prolactin secretion by benzodiazepines in vivo.

Administration of benzodiazepines to male or female rats was observed to inhibit prolactin release. Basal secretion of prolactin was only slightly suppressed with the highest dose of benzodiazepines; however, the rise in prolactin release following a stimulus was prevented even at low doses (0.1-1 mg/kg). The benzodiazepine diazepam blocked stress-induced prolactin release and, when given during the critical period of proestrus, the proestrus surge of prolactin. Diazepam administration also blunted the release of prolactin induced by dopaminergic receptor blockade following haloperidol, or by

Perthes' disease treated by prolonged recumbency and femoral head containment: a long-term appraisal.

The results of a long-term review of 102 hips in eighty-seven patients with Perthes' disease are described, the mean follow-up interval being seventeen years. All had been treated by an extremely rigorous conservative regime in which the patients were kept in hospital for an average period of twenty-six months, during which time they were confined to bed with the legs in wide abduction, first in traction and later in "broomstick" plasters to ensure "containment" of the femoral head. The patients were assessed by the joint clincial and radiological method described by Ratliff (1956). The result
