Mycorrhiza helper bacteria as stage-specific modulators of fungal development.

The rhizosphere is a narrow and dynamic soil zone where bacteria and fungi establish symbiotic and synergistic relationships with each other and with plants, collectively influencing nutrient cycling, soil health, and overall ecosystem functioning. Mycorrhiza Helper Bacteria (MHB) are a diverse group of bacterial taxa that promote mycorrhiza establishment, together with those that positively influence already established symbiotic associations. MHB have been largely described from the perspectives of interaction mechanisms, ecological functions, or agricultural applications, treating them as g…

Variation in Peperomia pellucida growth and secondary metabolism after rhizobacteria inoculation.

Peperomia pellucida L. Kunth is a herb well-known for its secondary metabolites (SM) with biological potential. In this study, the variations in the SM of P. pellucida during association with rhizobacteria were evaluated. Plants were inoculated with Enterobacter asburiae and Klebsiella variicola, which were identified by sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The data were evaluated at 7, 21, and 30-day post inoculation (dpi). Plant-bacteria symbiosis improved plant growth and weight. Total phenolic content and phenylalanine ammonia lyase enzyme activity had a significant increase mainly at 30 dpi.

S-Aryl Butenolide Thioacetates as Strigolactone Agonists: Mechanism-Guided Design for Weed Management and Crop Growth Regulation.

Strigolactones (SLs) act as plant hormones regulating shoot architecture and as rhizospheric signals inducing parasitic weed germination. Herein, sulfur-containing SL agonists were designed and synthesized to explore their potential in weed management and crop growth regulation. A series of S-aryl butenolide thioacetates were prepared through a modular two-step synthetic route. Their biological activities were evaluated using Orobanche cumana seed germination assays, winter wheat tillering tests, and strawberry fruit development studies. Several compounds exhibited pronounced SL-like activity,

Structural insights into the antibacterial function of the Pseudomonas putida effector Tke5.

Pseudomonas putida is a plant-beneficial rhizobacterium that encodes multiple type-VI secretion systems (T6SS) to outcompete phytopathogens in the rhizosphere. Among its antibacterial effectors, Tke5 (a member of the BTH_I2691 protein family) is a potent pore-forming toxin that disrupts ion homeostasis without causing considerable membrane damage. Tke5 harbours an N-terminal MIX domain, which is required for T6SS-dependent secretion in other systems. Many MIX domain-containing effectors require T6SS adaptor proteins (Tap) for secretion, but their molecular mechanisms of adaptor-effector bindin…

Ecological Management of Crown Gall-Affected Soils: Pathogen Reservoirs, Disease-Suppressive Microbiomes, and Helper Consortia.

Crown gall remains difficult to manage because pathogenic agrobacteria can persist in soil, rhizosphere niches, infected roots, plant residues, and propagative materials, while repeated wounding creates new infection sites. This review examines how these reservoirs interact with soil and plant-associated microbiota to shape disease recurrence. Crown gall-specific studies show that gall and graft-union communities are spatially structured and identify pathogen competition, opine use, and virulence-related functions as processes that may shape disease-associated microbial assemblages. Evidence f…
