A patient who suffered a fracture of the body of the 10th dorsal vertebra as a result of an automobile accident was examined seven years later. He complained of local pain over the gibbus site. All movements in the back and the joints of the extremities were within normal limits. Radiographs disclosed a healed compressed fracture of the body of the 10th thoracic vertebra with bony bridges contiguous with the 9th and 11th thoracic vertebrae. An unusual finding was the presence of a uniform sclerosis of a single rib at the level of the fracture site. Other bones of the rib cage, as well as the l

Subclavian artery compression by a cervical rib is an uncommon but potentially disabling condition. A series of 12 patients with 15 arterial lesions is reviewed and a staging system proposed to provide guidelines for managing patients with this condition. Stage I lesions have only arterial stenosis and minor poststenotic dilatation and are managed by thoracic outlet decompression, usually consisting of cervical rib resection. Stage II lesions have intrinsic arterial damage usually with subclavian aneurysm formation and require rib resection, aneurysmectomy, and arterial reconstruction. Stage I

Authors refer to a clinical case in which they observed the association of bilateral cervical ribs with aneurism of subclavian artery. They underline the high frequencey of occasional observations of anomalies of the thoracic outlet, and consider the possible pathogenetic mechanisms of the thoracic outlet syndrome and associated vascular damages.

A free rib pleura composite vascularized transfer for repair of a defect in the canine upper airway is discussed and the results are reported. The procedure was carried out on eight dogs. One dog died from the anesthetic. Three surgical failures resulted from technical difficulties: failure of the vascular anastomosis, torsion of the vascular pedicle, and hemorrhage. Four dogs successfully maintained their airways, although one demonstrated bone absorption. Bone scanning, angiography, tetracycline labeling, and light microscopy confirmed active osseous metabolism of the rib, providing further

We studied the action of the costal and crural (vertebral) parts of the diaphragm on the lower rib cage in normal supine dogs. The two parts of the diaphragm were separately stimulated by electrodes directly implanted in the muscle or via the different phrenic nerve roots in the neck. The results of the experiments indicate the following. 1) The costal and crural parts of the diaphragm have a different segmental innervation and a different mechanical action on the rib cage. 2) The costal diaphragm expands the lower rib cage when it contracts. This rib-cage expansion is due mostly to the fulcru

A case of the Saldino-Noonan type of short rib-polydactyly syndrome is reported. Although multiple internal malformations have been described in this syndrome, no significant visceral abnormalities were detected in this except for the hypoplastic lungs. A similar case was reported by Spranger et al. in 1974.

In this article, the authors report 8 cases of abnormal first rib, producing mainly arterial vascular disorders. The costal abnormalities, the clinical vascular disorders and the arteriographic signs are then reviewed. Treatment was then discussed and the methods of resection of the cervical rib are noted.
