Use of the operative microscope marked a new era for microsurgery in male infertility and andrology in the 1970s. More than a decade has passed since the initial description of the first robotic-assisted microsurgical vasovasostomy. Large single-center series have recently been published on robotic-assisted microsurgery for vasectomy reversal, especially in the past few years. Multicenter studies are also beginning to be reported, and the potential for this new platform for microsurgery is starting to become more apparent. This article describes the basic technical details of robotic-assisted

The retromolar trigone is a challenging transoral surgical site due to the difficulty of visualization. Our aim is to report a new technique of transoral robotic resection of retromolar trigone tumours. We present three patients with retromolar trigone tumours with pathological diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma who underwent successful transoral robotic resection. Robotic retromolar trigone resection and concurrent supraomohyoid neck dissections were performed in all patients without any complication. In conclusion, transoral robotic surgery is a safe and feasible technique for resection of

Due to significant differences in healthcare structure between the United States and Canada, there are unique barriers to adopting new medical technology in Canada. In this article, we describe our experience developing a transoral robotic surgery (TORS) program at Western University. Specifically, we outline the steps that were necessary to obtain institutional and multidisciplinary team approval, financial support, as well as surgeon and allied healthcare personnel training. This experience can potentially be used as a roadmap for other Canadian institutions pursuing a TORS program.

BACKGROUND: A laryngocoele is an abnormal dilatation of Morgagni's ventricle in direct communication with the laryngeal lumen. Surgical excision through a cervical approach is traditionally considered the treatment of choice for large (external and mixed) laryngocoeles. This paper describes the first reported case of a large mixed laryngocoele treated with transoral robotic surgery without cervical incisions.
METHOD: A 69-year-old female underwent transoral robotic surgery for the excision of a large mixed left laryngocoele. The surgery was performed using the da Vinci S surgical robotic syst

Vaginal mesh erosion into the bladder after midurethral sling procedure or cystocele repair is uncommon, with only a few cases having been reported in the literature. The ideal surgical management is still controversial. Current options for removal of eroded mesh include: endoscopic, transvaginal or abdominal (either open or laparoscopic) approaches. We, herein, present the first case of robotic removal of a large eroded vaginal mesh into the bladder and discuss potential benefits and limitations of the technique.

We report an unusual case of rectal mesh erosion presenting 16 months after robotic sacrocolpopexy. The patient initially underwent a robotic sacrocolpopexy, lysis of adhesions, midurethral sling, and posterior colporrhaphy for symptomatic grade 2 pelvic organ prolapse and urodynamic stress incontinence. Her postoperative recovery was uneventful. Sixteen months later, an anterior 2 × 2-cm rectal mesh erosion was noted on the colonoscopy performed when she presented with hematochezia.

Obscure gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, Crohn disease, Celiac disease, small bower tumors, and other disorders that occur in the GI tract have always been challenging to be diagnosed and treated due to the inevitable difficulty in accessing such a complex environment within the human body. With the invention of wireless capsule endoscope, the next generation of the traditional cabled endoscope, not only a dream has come true for the patients who have experienced a great discomfort and unpleasantness caused by the conventional endoscopic method, but also a new research field has been opened to

Submandibular gland excision is traditionally performed via a trans-cervical approach. While generally regarded as a relatively simple surgical procedure, several complications are possible, including injury to the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve, lingual nerve, hypoglossal nerve, facial artery and a visible unsightly neck scar or keloid. The trans-oral route has the ability to eliminate a cervical scar and decrease risk of injury to several structures. Coincident with the development of the trans-oral approach, robotic surgery has been gaining popularity in the operative manage

In an effort to minimize the limitations of laparoscopy, a robotic surgery system was introduced, but its role for gastric cancer is still unclear. The objective of this article is to assess the current status of robotic surgery for gastric cancer and to predict future prospects. Although the current study was limited by its small number of patients and retrospective nature, robot-assisted gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy for the treatment of gastric cancer is a feasible and safe procedure for experienced laparoscopic surgeons. Most studies have reported satisfactory results for postoperative

BACKGROUND: Complete thymectomy is the procedure of choice in the treatment of thymomas and in treating selected patients with myasthenia gravis. Transsternal thymectomy is the gold standard for most patients. Robot-assisted thymectomy has emerged as an alternative to open transsternal surgery. The goal of this study was to compare perioperative outcomes in patients who underwent transsternal or robot-assisted thymectomy.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients who underwent robot-assisted or transsternal thymectomy at our institution from February 2001 to February 2010.

The advancement of minimally invasive surgical technologies over the past several years has led to improved surgical outcomes and greater patient satisfaction. Particularly for patients undergoing parathyroidectomies, endoscopic surgeries resulted in smaller surgical scars when compared with the open approach. Early endoscopic methods, however, were still restricted in their ability to provide adequate dexterity, two-dimensional views of the operative field; and while smaller than open surgeries, still left the presence of a small cervical scar. The limitations of endoscopic surgery led to app

Diaphragmatic paralysis is an uncommon condition characterized by significant elevation of a hemidiaphragm, and can cause dyspnea. The goal of diaphragm plication is to improve dyspnea by correcting the dysfunctional movement of a diaphragm during inspiration. Minimally invasive thoracoscopic diaphragm plication has been widely used and has been reported to lead to significant improvements in dyspnea and postoperative pulmonary function. Advantages of thoracoscopic plication compared to open thoracotomy are less postoperative pain and shorter hospitalization, yet technical difficulties due to

BACKGROUND: As cesarean sections become a more common mode of delivery, they have become the most likely cause of vesicouterine fistula formation. The associated pathology with repeat cesarean deliveries may make repair of these fistulas difficult. Computer-enhanced telesurgery, also known as robotic-assisted surgery, offers a 3-dimensional view of the operative field and allows for intricate movements necessary for complex suturing and dissection. These qualities are advantageous in vesicouterine fistula repair.
CASE: A healthy 34-year-old woman who underwent 4 cesarean deliveries presented
