Chronic heart failure due to severe endocardiosis in a Gambian giant pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus).

A 1.5-yr-old captive male Gambian giant pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus) died after suffering from anorexia, weakness, and dyspnea for 3 wk. Thoracic radiographs of thorax and abdomen and computed tomography showed a severe biventricular enlargement of the heart and a moderate hepatomegaly. Necropsy revealed a severe, bilateral hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilation of the right ventricle due to multifocal bilateral, valvular endocardiosis of all atrioventricular valves and acute hepatic congestion. Histologically, the atrioventricular valves were multifocally thickened by a marked endocar

The Year of the Rat ends - time to fight hunger!

This paper investigates the importance of ecologically based rodent management in the light of the current food crisis, and the potential effects of this approach on the position of the undernourished. Hunger and food prices are on the rise owing to shortages that can be traced to reasons such as climatic extremes, use of crops for biofuels, reduced growth in yields which lag behind population growth, reduced world stocks and lack of sufficient investment in maintaining the irrigation infrastructure. For the undernourished this is problematic as they are most vulnerable to the rise in food pri

Prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in muskrats in northeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. are intestinal parasites that affect humans and animals throughout the world. Although infection with Giardia spp. is usually self-limiting, some cases result in mild to severe enteritis. Giardiasis can be treated with modern drugs. The increasing incidence of well-documented outbreaks of Cryptosporidiosis has resulted in a growing awareness of the danger of this infection. In this study, the authors examined beavers and muskrats to determine their role as reservoir hosts in the spread of these two pathogens. The authors obtained fecal samples from trapped

Issues in the design and interpretation of chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies in rodents: approaches to dose selection.

For more than three decades chronic studies in rodents have been the benchmark for assessing the potential long-term toxicity, and particularly the carcinogenicity, of chemicals. With doses typically administered for about 2 years (18 months to lifetime), the rodent bioassay has been an integral component of testing protocols for food additives, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and all manner of byproducts and environmental contaminants. Over time, the data from these studies have been used to address an increasing diversity of questions related to the assessment of human hea

Transmission ecology of Echinococcus multilocularis: what are the ranges of parasite stability among various host communities in China?

A striking feature of the transmission ecology of Echinococcus multilocularis in China is the diversity of hosts that contribute to the parasite cycle. Considering the population dynamics of key reservoir intermediate hosts and the ratio of their preferred habitat in a landscape (ROMPA) is essential to understanding transmission, but the numerous communities in which the parasite cycles and the extent of those communities is currently far from being fully documented. On the Tibetan plateau grassland management influences intermediate host species populations and the sheer size of the area coul

[Hantavirus infection].

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) are rodent borne viral zoonosis caused by hantavirus infection. HFRS and HPS cause epidemic in Eurasia continent and North and South American continent, respectively. Various species of wild rodents play as a reservoir animal in nature. Laboratory rat derived HFRS epidemic has also been reported in several countries including Japan. Recently, HFRS and HPS were classified to category 4 diseases in the Japanese law in which patient must be reported to municipality office. Since rat has widely been used in many i

Systemic toxoplasmosis in a five-month-old beaver, (Castor canadensis).

A 5-mo-old orphan beaver, Castor canadensis, died of severe systemic toxoplasmosis during rehabilitation. Histologic lesions included lymphohistiocytic encephalitis, myocarditis, and interstitial pneumonia with multinucleated cells. Intracytoplasmic cysts containing tachyzoites and bradyzoites identified as Toxoplasma gondii by immunohisto-chemistry were present in macrophages, type-II pneumocytes, and endothelial cells. Immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal morbillivirus antibody and transmission electron microscopy of lung revealed no evidence of concurrent paramyxoviral infection, as comm

Cost of living in free-ranging degus (Octodon degus): seasonal dynamics of energy expenditure.

Animals process and allocate energy at different seasons at variable rates, depending on their breeding season and changes in environmental conditions and resulting physiological demands. Overall total energy expenditure, in turn, should either increase in some seasons due to special added demands (e.g. reproduction) or it could simply remain at about the same level, in which case the animals must show compensatory rebalancing of other expenditures that can be reduced. To test for the alternative hypotheses of seasonal variability or compensation, we measured total daily energy expenditure (DE

Citellophilus tesquorum altaicus fleas from two natural (Karginsky and Barlyksky) populations have been studied. There are differences between the fleas of these populations in susceptibility to plague microbe. The adaptability and abundance of the causative organism in the body are higher in the fleas of the Barlyksky population. The sizes of the head are significantly higher in the females of the Karginsky population. There are no differences in this index between males. According to all 5 studies signs of chaetotaxia, the chaeta abundance is greater in both females and males of the Karginsk

Cell populations in the pineal gland of the viscacha (Lagostomus maximus). Seasonal variations.

Pineal samples of the viscacha, which were taken in winter and in summer, were analysed using both light and electron microscopy. The differences found between the two seasons were few in number but significant. The parenchyma showed two main cell populations. Type I cells occupied the largest volume of the pineal and showed the characteristics of typical pinealocytes. Many processes, some of which were filled with vesicles, could be seen in intimate contact with the neighbouring cells. The presence in the winter samples of "synaptic" ribbons and spherules, which were almost absent in the summ

Ultrastructural and morphometric study of the Sertoli cell of the viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) during the annual reproductive cycle.

Changes in the morphology of viscacha Sertoli cells were studied during the annual reproductive cycle. Sertoli cells exhibited marked nuclear and cytoplasmic changes. Seasonal variation in nuclear size and shape, chromatin texture, and nucleolus characteristics was observed. The seasonal patterns of the volume densities of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), mitochondria, Golgi complex, dense bodies and lipid inclusions were distinct. Morphometric analysis revealed that the Golgi complex is the organelle most sensitive to seasonal change. It declined drastically in the regressed testes and its rec

Ironing out disease: inherited disorders of iron homeostasis.

Iron presents us with a paradox. Without it, cells simply cannot survive because iron is an essential cofactor for many enzymes in critical biochemical pathways. However, when iron is present in excess, it can be highly cytotoxic due to its propensity to catalyze the formation of reactive oxygen radicals. To cater for this dual nature, cells and organisms have developed elaborate mechanisms for regulating iron intake and efflux. When these mechanisms are disrupted, as is the case in a number of inherited disorders of iron metabolism, the pathological consequences can be severe. Many of these d

Use of monoclonal antibodies for the identification of Leishmania spp. isolated from humans and wild rodents in the State of Campeche, Mexico.

The genus Leishmania includes 30 described species which infect a wide variety of mammalian hosts. The precise identification of leishmanial parasites at the species level is very important in order to determine whether an organism, causing the disease in a given area, is of the same biotype as that found in suspected mammalian reservoirs. The objectives of the present study were (1) to identify leishmanial parasites isolated from humans and wild rodents from the State of Campeche, an endemic focus of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) in southern Mexico, using an indirect immunofluoresce

[Epidemiology and epizootiology of plague: the major role of the surveillance of reservoir populations of wild rodents in the control of permanent foci].

Plague is a bacterial infection, due to Yersinia pestis. It is essentially a zoonosis of rodents, communicable from rodent to rodent and from rodent to man by flea bite. From the first human case, acquired from rodents, interhuman transmission occurs by means of flea bite (bubonic plague) or is airborne (primary pulmonary plague). Long term implantation of plague amongst wild rodents populations after the third pandemic (1894 to present), created inveterate foci in all continents, except Europe. Those wild rodents settlements in arid biotopes, preserved from human activities, represent the mai

Trichuris chilensis: physicochemical and immunological characterization of the different antigenic components.

The protein pattern of Trichuris chilensis obtained by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was analyzed. Complex protein band patterns covering a wide range of molecular weights were obtained. The molecular weights of the major proteins present in different tissue homogenates were estimated. Antisera raised in rabbits against homogenates of T. chilensis and sera from naturally infected Ctenomys australis were used in Western blotting, immunoelectrophoresis and passive hemagglutination to compare the antigenicity of the adult male, adult female, eggs, oocytes, stichosome a

Systematic relationships among pocket gopher chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) inferred from electrophoretic data.

Multilocus starch-gel electrophoresis was used to obtain electrophoretic data for maximum parsimony, phenetic, and component analysis of systematic relationships among 14 species of pocket gopher chewing lice and two outgroup species. Pocket gopher lice studied included taxa representing seven of the 25 species complexes in Geomydoecus, and two of the four species complexes of Thomomydoecus. In pairwise comparisons, 12 of the 14 pocket gopher lice were characterized by two or more fixed genetic differences, and each nominal species possessed at least one fixed difference. These electrophoretic

Seasonal changes of parafollicular and follicular cells of the dormouse thyroid (Myoxus glis): an ultrastructural and immunocytochemical study.

The follicular epithelium of dormouse thyroid consists of two distinct cellular types, follicular and parafollicular cells. Parafollicular cells can be easily identified by their high cytoplasmic dye-affinity for phloxine, round to ovoid shape, basal arrangement and lack of contact with follicular colloid. The wide cytoplasmic matrix is clear and contains many secretory granules of variable electron density whose contents histochemically appears to be proteic with a lean glucidic component. Furthermore immunocytochemical reactions with antibodies against calcitonin and somatostatin showed that
