Sleep disturbance, personality and the onset of depression and anxiety: prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown associations between sleep disturbance and the onset of depression and anxiety. However, this relationship may reflect an underlying vulnerability, such as temperament or cognitive style, which accounts for an association between the two. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sleep disturbance and the onset of a mental disorder after a 4-year follow-up, and whether this was accounted for by ruminative style and neuroticism. METHOD: The nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire was used to assess the criteria for major depression, generalized

Psychological intervention targets for people with visual impairments: the importance of cognitive coping and goal adjustment.

PURPOSE: This study represents, to our knowledge, the first examination of the joint influence of cognitive coping strategies and goal-related coping on depressive symptoms in people with severe visual impairments with the aim of finding targets for intervention. METHOD: In total, data of 67 individuals with visual impairments were assembled by telephone interviews. Depressive symptomatology, cognitive coping strategies, and goal-related coping processes were measured. Relationships between these variables were statistically analyzed by Pearson correlations and multiple regression analyses.

Therapy based on positive self-defining memories for older women with depressive disorder and associated ruminations: a pilot study.

Depressive disorders hinder the retrieval of positive memories, which is the mechanism strategically used by healthy subjects to cope with negative feelings. An adjustment to this strategy to deal with depression affecting elderly women presenting ruminative responses could be obtained by materialising a number of positive self-defining memories. This innovative cognitive therapeutic method should lead to a decrease in the rumination rate and an improvement in depressive disorders for ageing women. Our study, which included 14 depressed women over the age of 65 who presented with ruminative re

Effects of explicit and implicit perseverative cognition on cardiac recovery after cognitive stress.

Slow cardiovascular (CV) recovery after stress is a predictor of adverse CV outcomes. Perseverative cognition (PC) about stress has been hypothesized to co-determine slow recovery. In the present study, it was investigated whether two types of trait PC, i.e. trait worry and trait rumination, predicted delayed cardiac recovery after a cognitive stressor. Furthermore, it was examined whether explicit state PC (i.e. negative intrusive thoughts) or implicit state PC (i.e. automatic vigilance) additionally predicted delayed cardiac recovery. Fifty-nine participants performed a stressful task, which

How does emotion regulation change during psychotherapy? A daily diary study of adults in a transdiagnostic partial hospitalization program.

OBJECTIVE: Improvement in emotion regulation is a proposed transdiagnostic mechanism of change. However, treatment research is limited by disorder-specific investigations that assess a narrow number of emotion regulation strategies. Moreover, most assess pre-to-post-treatment change without examining short-term changes throughout psychotherapy that might influence treatment response. METHOD: To address these gaps, this study uses daily diary methodology to examine trajectories of change in use of six emotion regulation strategies during partial hospitalization psychiatric treatment. Treatment

Attending to body and mind: Does interoceptive attention compete with controlled and negative automatic thoughts?

Interoceptive attention refers to how an individual typically allocates their attentional resources to physiological signals. We do not, however, fully understand how interoceptive attention relates with other forms of internally focused attention, such as attention to internal thoughts (e.g., mind-wandering, reflection, worry), and whether these factors compete for limited attentional resources at the trait and state level. Across two studies (n = 222, n = 109; years data collected: 2021-2022, 2023-2024; from a U.K.-based predominantly undergraduate population), we isolated two components fro

Understanding the link between racial discrimination and traumatic stress symptoms among Black youth: The role of co-rumination and racism-related vigilance.

OBJECTIVE: Racial discrimination represents a pernicious source of trauma for Black youth that can critically hinder mental health. This cross-sectional study examined whether racism-related co-rumination and racism-related vigilance function as distinct and sequential pathways linking racial discrimination to traumatic stress symptoms (TSS) among a sample of Black adolescents. METHOD: Data were drawn from a national sample of 195 Black adolescents (Mage = 14.52; 49% female) who completed questionnaires assessing racial discrimination, racism-related co-rumination, racism-related vigilance, a

What Emotion Regulation Strategies are Associated with a General Psychopathology Factor (p) in Adolescence? Identifying Possible Transdiagnostic Targets for Intervention.

Mental health problems in adolescence are increasing and there is an urgent call for transdiagnostic interventions, as most adolescents experience problems across multiple domains. Research has identified a general psychopathology factor (p) capturing the shared variance across mental health problems. In parallel, there is empirical support for the transdiagnostic nature of emotion regulation. In the current study, we explore the associations between p and emotion regulation strategies to identify which strategies may be promising targets for intervention. Data from the population-based Youth

Efficacy of a Self-Help Web-Based Recovery Training in Improving Sleep in Workers: Randomized Controlled Trial in the General Working Population.

BACKGROUND: Sleep complaints are among the most prevalent health concerns, especially among workers, which may lead to adverse effects on health and work. Internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (iCBT-I) offers the opportunity to deliver effective solutions on a large scale. The efficacy of iCBT-I for clinical samples has been demonstrated in recent meta-analyses, and there is evidence that iCBT-I is effective in the working population with severe sleep complaints. However, to date, there is limited evidence from randomized controlled trials that iCBT-I could also be an ef

Rumination catastrophism and pain in injured athletes.

Pain associated to injuries is a complex experience that combine both objective and-subjective elements and which strongly affects rehabilitation outcomes of sport injuries. It may affect directly (e.g., reducing range and strength of the movements involved in the physical therapy), or indirectly (e.g., decreasing adherence, reducing psychological readiness). Cognitive factors such as rumination and catastrophic thinking may affect the perception of pain and play a role in athletes management of pain during this journey. This study is aimed at longitudinally examine the predictive role of rumi

Relationship Between Second Victim Distress, Resilience, Deliberate Rumination and Compassion Fatigue Among ICU Nurses: A Moderated Mediation Model.

BACKGROUND: Patient safety is a critical global health issue. ICU nurses, burdened by heavy workloads and psychological stress, are particularly vulnerable to second victim syndrome following adverse events. This can diminish their sensitivity to patient harm and emotional engagement, potentially resulting in compassion fatigue. Deliberate rumination and resilience may serve as protective factors in this process. AIM: This study investigates the relationships among second victim distress, deliberate rumination and compassion fatigue in ICU nurses and examines resilience as a moderating factor

Deliberate Rumination and Positive Reappraisal as Serial Mediators Between Life Impact and Posttraumatic Growth in Victims of State Terrorism in Chile (1973-1990).

This study examines the role of coping strategies related to positive reappraisal versus other cognitive strategies (deliberate rumination) as mediators between life impact and posttraumatic growth in survivors of the military dictatorship in Chile between 1973 and 1990 (tortured political prisoners and family members of political prisoners executed and missing). Survey data from 251 political violence survivors were analyzed using the SPSS PROCESS macro for bootstrapping indirect effects (Hayes, 2013). Results indicated that positive reappraisal (or reframing) coping mediated the relationship
