WhatsApp-Supported Teledentistry to Reinforce Oral Health Promotion Among Older Adults Residing in Rural and Urban Areas: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Access to oral health promotion for older adults is globally limited, especially in rural, low- and middle-income settings. Digital research often lacks theoretical foundation and focuses primarily on younger cohorts, yielding few randomized trials evaluating accessible tools for oral health education in older adults. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a telehealth reinforcement strategy for oral health promotion to improve knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: A single-center, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was condu

Health management gaps and EHR willingness among ethnic minority residents with rural backgrounds in Yunnan, China: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Digital health monitoring and electronic health records (EHRs) are increasingly used to support chronic disease management and community-based public health services. However, their implementation in rural ethnic minority communities depends not only on technical availability, but also on residents' service contact, perceived usefulness, digital support, and expectations of feedback. OBJECTIVE: This study examined health management gaps, digital health exposure, and EHR willingness among ethnic minority residents with rural community backgrounds in Yunnan Province, Southwest China

Generation Malawi: a family-based birth cohort investigating physical and mental health conditions in rural and urban Malawi - study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Malawi is at a unique time point when infectious disease and undernutrition persist while modern diets, and changes in urbanisation, medical treatments and climate change, non-communicable long-term physical and mental health conditions are emerging. Malawi faces high socioeconomic hardships with 75% of families living in poverty with limited access to basic resources. With these demographic changes, very limited research has been undertaken into the determinants of physical and mental health-related trajectories over time, and in particular the role of prenatal and early life ex

Understanding community health workers' readiness to provide hyperlipidemia-related self-management support in rural Nepal: a biphasic mixed-methods evaluation.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether Female Community Health Volunteers' (FCHVs) can counsel for hyperlipidemia in rural Nepal. METHODS: Using the Health Belief Model, we evaluated FCHV's knowledge, self-efficacy, and barriers to counsel for hyperlipidemia in two phases eleven months apart among 28 FCHVs from rural mid-Western Nepal. In each phase, we conducted four Focused Group Discussions (FGDs), hyperlipidemia-related training and two similar surveys before and after the training. We used inductive and deductive codes for thematic analysis and descriptive statistics for quantitative analysis

The Role of Health Networks in Disseminating Knowledge about Infant HIV Testing in Rural Uganda: Population-Based Sociocentric Network Study.

Early testing of infants exposed to HIV can significantly decrease mortality for those linked to HIV treatment. Infants exposed to HIV should first be tested at 6 weeks of age, but only 60% are tested as recommended. Little research has focused on the role of social networks in disseminating information about infant HIV testing. We conducted a cross-sectional, sociocentric network study of all adults living in a rural parish in Uganda (N=1,383) and gathered data on socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported HIV status, and knowledge about infant testing recommendations. We administered a

Urban-rural health disparity among patients with chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional community-based study from 2012 to 2019.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing owing to the ageing population, resulting in an increased demand for dialysis and kidney transplantation, which can be costly. Current research lacks clarity regarding the relationship between residence setting and CKD prevalence or its related risk factors. This study explored the urban-rural disparities in CKD prevalence and risk factors in Taiwan. Our findings will aid the understanding of the distribution of CKD and the design of more effective prevention programmes. DESIGN: This cross-sectional community-based study

Assessing the Effect of Extreme Weather on Population Health Using Consumer-Grade Wearables in Rural Burkina Faso: Observational Panel Study.

BACKGROUND: Extreme weather, including heat and extreme rainfall, is projected to increase owing to climate change, which can have adverse impacts on human health. In particular, rural populations in sub-Saharan Africa are at risk because of a high burden of climate-sensitive diseases and low adaptive capacities. However, there is a lack of data on the regions that are anticipated to be most exposed to climate change. Improved public health surveillance is essential for better decision-making and health prioritization and to identify risk groups and suitable adaptation measures. Digital techno

Social support, nutrition and health among women in rural Bangladesh: complex tradeoffs in allocare, kin proximity and support network size.

Malnutrition among women of reproductive age is a significant public health concern in low- and middle-income countries. Of particular concern are undernutrition from underweight and iron deficiency, along with overweight and obesity, all of which have negative health consequences for mothers and children. Accumulating evidence suggests that risk for poor nutritional outcomes may be mitigated by social support, yet how social support is measured varies tremendously and its effects likely vary by age, kinship and reproductive status. We examine the effects of different measures of social suppor

Anti-Rabies Vaccine Compliance and Knowledge of Community Health Worker Regarding Animal Bite Management in Rural Area of Eastern India.

Background Rabies is a public health problem in developing countries like India accounting for the second-highest number of rabies-related deaths worldwide. Anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) is the only proven and effective way of preventing death in this 100% fatal disease. However, compliance is a real concern. This study aims to assess the compliance of ARV and rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) among the ARV-clinic beneficiaries and also the knowledge of the health workers regarding animal bite management. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in an ARV clinic of a community health centre in a ru

Exploring People's Candidacy for Mobile Health-Supported HIV Testing and Care Services in Rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The use of mobile communication technologies (mHealth: mobile health) in chronic disease management has grown significantly over the years. mHealth interventions have the potential to decentralize access to health care and make it convenient, particularly in resource-constrained settings. It is against this backdrop that we aimed to codevelop (with potential users) a new generation of mobile phone-connected HIV diagnostic tests and Web-based clinical care pathways needed for optimal delivery of decentralized HIV testing, prevention, and care in low- and middle-income countries. Pioneer baby: suggestions for pre- and postnatal health promotion programs from rural English and Spanish-speaking pregnant and postpartum women.

In the United States, more than 9 million rural women (15-44 years old) experience limited access and delivery of reproductive healthcare services. Rurality coupled with lower socio-economic status are associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain in-depth information from underserved English- and Spanish-speaking pregnant and postpartum rural women on what they would value in a health promotion program. Three focus group sessions were conducted exploring four domains: (1) physical activity, (2) dietary habits, (3) fe

How people-centred health systems can reach the grassroots: experiences implementing community-level quality improvement in rural Tanzania and Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Quality improvement (QI) methods engage stakeholders in identifying problems, creating strategies called change ideas to address those problems, testing those change ideas and scaling them up where successful. These methods have rarely been used at the community level in low-income country settings. Here we share experiences from rural Tanzania and Uganda, where QI was applied as part of the Expanded Quality Management Using Information Power (EQUIP) intervention with the aim of improving maternal and newborn health. Village volunteers were taught how to generate change ideas to im

High rates of chlamydia found among 12- to 16-year-olds attending a rural sexual health clinic: implications for practice.

UNLABELLED: Background Chlamydia is the most commonly diagnosed bacterial sexually transmissible infection (STI) and is asymptomatic in ~80% of women. If untreated, potential consequences include pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. METHODS: In 2014, a retrospective audit was undertaken at a rural service to determine what proportion of patients were aged 12-16 years, infected with chlamydia and their reasons for attending the clinic. RESULTS: There were 111 patients aged 12-16 years attending during 2011-2014; 104 (95%) were female. One hundred and ninety-four chl

The Heart of New Ulm Project: using community-based cardiometabolic risk factor screenings in a rural population health improvement initiative.

Awareness of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors can improve the health of individuals and populations. Community-based risk factor screening programs may be particularly useful for quantifying the burden of cardiometabolic risk in a given population, particularly in underserved areas. This study provided a description of a screening platform and how it has been used to monitor the cardiometabolic risk profile within the broader Heart of New Ulm Project, which is based in a rural Minnesota community. A cross-sectional, descriptive examination of baseline screening data indicated t

Community Coalition Building and Human-Centered Design Strategies to Advance Homeless Health Systems: A Case Study from Rural North Carolina.

In Burke County, North Carolina, a Hepatitis A outbreak among unsheltered residents exposed gaps in access to clinic-based care and prompted early, ad hoc "backpack medicine" outreach efforts to deliver care directly in nontraditional settings. While this approach addressed immediate needs, it highlighted the inadequacy of isolated interventions, prompting local partners to pursue more structured, coordinated, and community-driven approaches to homeless health system design. This project report describes how Burke County Public Health, in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Ch

Health-Seeking Behaviors After Acute Respiratory Infection Among Urban and Rural Residents and Different Age Groups: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: The choice of pathways in health-seeking behavior following acute respiratory infection (ARI) is critical for health care resource allocation, yet traditional logistic regression methods struggle to capture the dynamic evolution of such behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the dynamic process of changes in health-seeking behaviors following the onset of ARI and to identify differences in behavioral pathways associated with key factors such as urban-rural status and age. METHODS: This study used a multistate Markov model to quantify transition probabilities and inten
