BACKGROUND: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare disease of unknown etiology, involving any site of the body. The scalp is the most frequent location, followed by the forearms, knees, both sides of the trunk, and neck, in decreasing order of frequency. OBJECTIVE: To observe analgesic effect of scalp acupuncture on labor.
METHODS: Seventy primiparae with term pregnancy and monocyesis were randomly divided into scalp acupuncture group treated by acupuncture at the Shengzhi area of scalp, and control group by no treatment. We report a case of recurrent squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the scalp with deep cerebral invasion in a 15-year-old girl. Plain films and CT showed extensive, full thickness, and skull destruction at the vertex. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI revealed neoplastic invasion of the meninges and both cerebral hemispheres down to the lateral ventricle. This case represents an example of (SCC) imitating a primary brain tumor by exhibiting intracranial extension.

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) of the scalp are relatively rare, and their precise natural course remains to be elucidated. We encountered a patient with a scalp AVM that progressively enlarged over the course of 3 years by capturing feeders from intracranial arteries. We report a case of malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumor showing multiple distant metastases. The patient demonstrated a round mass in the right occipital area for 12 months and the lesion grew rapidly to assume 8 x 6.5 x 4 cm in diameter, with areas of superficial erosion and crusting within the recent 3 months. Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most common cutaneous malignant neoplasms affecting fair-skinned human beings. They may progressively enlarge and spread by peripheral extension. Intracranial invasion is very rare. A case of a giant BCC of the scalp invading directly into the left hemisphere through the frontal and parietal lobe and meninges is presented. Brain invasion along Virchow-Robin's spaces is demonstrated histopathologically. A review of literature failed to disclose a previous report of similar extensive and fatal cerebral invasion from a basal cell carcinoma of the scalp.

The majority of extracranial masses detected by prenatal ultrasound screening are encephalocoeles. Several recent publications have drawn attention to extracranial masses which resemble encephalocoeles. The uncertainty in these situations can result in the unnecessary termination of a pregnancy. We report a case of an epidermal cyst of the scalp presenting as an encephalocoele at a routine second-trimester ultrasound scan.

Myxoid liposarcoma of the head and neck is an extremely rare entity.
