Child maltreatment and resilience in adulthood: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify associations between overall and subtypes of CM, global/trait resilience, and five resilience domains (coping, self-esteem, emotion regulation, self-efficacy, and well-being) in adults, and to examine moderators and mediators of these associations. A systematic search was undertaken on 12 June 2024 to identify published peer-reviewed articles in five databases (PROSPERO-CRD42023394120). Of 15,262 records, 203 studies were included, comprising 145,317 adults (M age = 29.62 years; 34.96% males); 183 studies and 557 effect sizes were

Borderline personality trait is associated with neural differentiation of self-other processing: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with borderline personality traits are known to have disturbed representations of self and others. Specifically, an unstable self-identity and difficulties distinguishing between self and others can impair their mentalizing abilities in interpersonal situations. However, it is unclear whether these traits are linked to differences in neural representation of self and others. METHODS: In this study involving 156 young adults, changes in neural function during self-other processing were measured using a Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) task and a self-report

Coming to terms with oneself: a mixed methods approach to perceived self-esteem of adult survivors of childhood maltreatment in foster care settings.

BACKGROUND: A broad range of psychopathological sequelae was found in adult survivors of institutional childhood maltreatment (IM). Childhood maltreatment is also associated with lower self-esteem (SE). In previous qualitative research, adult survivors of IM reported feelings of worthlessness and self-doubts, but research on IM and its associations with SE is still scarce. METHOD: To investigate the emotional facet of SE in 46 adult survivors of IM in foster care settings provided by the City of Vienna we used the Emotional SE subscale of the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Scale ('Multidimensio

Shame and Anxiety: The Mediating Role of Childhood Adversity in Dancers.

The combination of shame, anxiety, and a history of childhood maltreatment can have devastating effects on self-esteem and on the morbidity and mortality of an individual. Shame is a natural emotion evoked in social evaluative settings. Without some degree of shame, goal attainment is less likely. However, high levels of shame may increase pathology and decrease performance. In this crosssectional study, pre-professional and professional dancers were divided into two shame groupings: low (N = 193) and high (N = 25). Chi square and multivariate analyses of covariance (age and gender as covariat

Letters to anorexia. Narrative tools for working with anorectic patientsin a Dialogical Self context.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic arterial occlusive disease of the lower limbs, a common (800,000 patients in France) invalidating condition, can involve one or more arterial territories. In 90% of the cases, it is related to a more general disease, atherosclerosis. The risk factors are the same as for atherosclerosis and can be classed into three distinct groups: pathological conditions, constitutional characteristics, and lifestyle. Besides age and gender, smoking habits are by far the most predominant vascular risk factor for chronic arterial occlusive disease. Other factors include diabetes, known to pl

Self-reported interpersonal problems and impact messages as perceived by significant others are differentially associated with the process and outcome of depression therapy.

Interpersonal factors play a major role in causing and maintaining depression. This study sought to investigate how patients' self-perceived interpersonal problems and impact messages as perceived by significant others are interrelated, change over therapy, and differentially predict process and outcome in psychotherapy of depression. For the present study, we used data from 144 outpatients suffering from major depression that were treated within a psychotherapy study. Interpersonal variables were assessed pre- and posttherapy with the self-report Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-Circumplex

The role of self-efficacy, self-esteem and optimism for using routine health check-ups in a population-based sample. A longitudinal perspective.

While several cross-sectional studies have shown that self-efficacy, self-esteem and optimism are associated with the use of routine health check-ups, little is known about this relationship based on longitudinal studies. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to examine whether these factors are associated with routine health check-ups longitudinally. Data were retrieved from a population-based longitudinal study of individuals (≥40years of age) residing in private households in Germany (two waves: 2008 and 2011). Widely established scales were used to quantify self-efficacy, self-esteem

Investigating the mediational role of negative urgency in the anxiety sensitivity pathway to cannabis problems and dependence symptoms among postsecondary students.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is associated with cannabis use. People high in AS may use cannabis to cope with elevated anxiety. This association is consistently supported in the literature. However, we have much to learn about the mechanisms of the AS pathway to cannabis use. We aimed to examine negative urgency-the tendency to act impulsively when distressed-as a mediator of the association of AS with cannabis problems and cannabis dependence symptoms. We hypothesized that negative urgency would uniquely mediate the association of AS with cannabis outcomes after controlling for other

Faces of Shame: Implications for Self-Esteem, Emotion Regulation, Aggression, and Well-Being.

There is an increasing interest in psychological research on shame experiences and their associations with other aspects of psychological functioning and well-being, as well as with possible maladaptive outcomes. In an attempt to confirm and extend previous knowledge on this topic, we investigated the nomological network of shame experiences in a large community sample (N = 380; 66.1% females), adopting a multidimensional conceptualization of shame. Females reported higher levels of shame (in particular, bodily and behavioral shame), guilt, psychological distress, emotional reappraisal, and ho

Do adult men with untreated ventral penile curvature have adverse outcomes?

INTRODUCTION: Congenital ventral penile curvature without hypospadias is often treated surgically in childhood. The history of untreated ventral curvature is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study's aim was to examine the association of untreated ventral penile curvature with various sexual and psychosexual outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: An electronic survey was advertised to men older than 18 years on Facebook. Men with possible ventral penile curvature identified themselves by choosing sketches that most closely represented their anatomy. Outcomes assessed included: Sexual Health Inventory for Men, diffi

[Agreement between self-report and clinician's assessment in depressed adolescents, using the example of BDI-II and CDRS-R].

OBJECTIVES: Preceding studies demonstrated a high agreement between self-report and clinician's assessment of depression. The concordance on the level of sum scores, subscales, and single items, however, has yet to be investigated in a psychiatric adolescent sample. Also, the influence of additional variables such as age, sex, and IQ has been insufficiently studied in adolescents. METHODS: Scores on the BDI-II and CDRS-R, assessed within 1 week, were collected from 105 adolescents (mean age = 15.94 years). Analyses of correlation were done on levels of sum scores, subscales, and single items.

The role of trauma symptoms in nonsuicidal self-injury.

Reports of traumatic events by individuals who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) are common; yet, evidence for the relation between traumatic events and NSSI is inconclusive. This review explores the thesis that trauma symptoms, rather than the experience of a traumatic event per se, underlie this relation, specifically suggesting that trauma symptoms might serve as a mediator. The literature indicates that self-injury plays an important functional role in coping with trauma symptoms such that self-injury can provide an escape from intrusive thoughts and aversive emotional states, as we

Working memory capacity in generalized social phobia.

Research suggests that understanding complex social cues depends on the availability of cognitive resources (e.g., Phillips, Channon, Tunstall, Hedenstrom, & Lyons, 2008). In spite of evidence suggesting that executive control functioning may impact anxiety (e.g., Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos, & Calvo, 2007), relatively few studies have examined working memory in individuals with generalized social phobia. Moreover, few studies have examined the role of threat-relevant content in working memory performance in clinically anxious populations. To this end, the present study assessed working memory

A comparison of the trait emotional intelligence profiles of individuals with and without Asperger syndrome.

The extent to which the socioemotional impairments of Asperger syndrome (AS) might be extreme manifestations of individual differences within the general population remains under-explored. We compared the trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) profiles of 30 individuals with AS against the profiles of 43 group-matched controls using the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue). Participants with AS scored significantly lower than controls on 12 of the 15 TEIQue facets (η(p) (2) = 0.09 to 0.49) as well as on all four factors and the global score of the construct (η(p) (2) = 0.07 to

Women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations renegotiating a post-prophylactic mastectomy identity: self-image and self-disclosure.

The Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE) website is devoted to women at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. One of the most frequently discussed topics on the archived messaged board has been prophylactic mastectomy (PM) for women with a BRCA1/2 mutation. We reviewed the messages, over a 4 year period, of 21 high risk women and their "conversational" partners who originally posted on a thread about genetic testing, genetic counseling and family history. We used a qualitative research inductive process involving close reading, coding and identification of recurrent patterns,

The impact of perceived racism: psychological symptoms among African American boys.

Examined the relations among perceived racism and externalizing symptoms, internalizing symptoms, hopelessness, and self-concept in African American boys (N = 84). The experience of racism is a complex phenomenon that has been found to have negative psychological outcomes in adult studies of African Americans. There has been a gap in the empirical literature regarding the possible associations between perceived racism and children's psychological well-being. This study is an attempt to address that gap. Results demonstrated that experiences of racism were related to self- and parent-reported e
