Pathogenesis studies of experimentally produced sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in laboratory rabbits are described. Animals were examined at intervals after inoculation. The principal change was a proliferation of lymphoid cells which began as soon as three days and became quite pronounced by 13 days after inoculation. The appendix, mesenteric lymph node and spleen were most obviously affected. The reason for this was a progressive increase in T-lymphocytes, which appeared to be a hyperplasia rather than neoplasia in T-dependent areas of these organs. Lymphoid cells also accu…

Reducing the cerebrospinal fluid concentration of NaCl by infusion into a lateral cerebral ventricle of isotonic solutions of 0.3 mol/l mannitol or sucrose at 1 ml/h for 2 h caused a large reduction in renal Na excretion in conscious sheep deprived of water for 24 or 48 h. Infusion of 0.3 mol/l mannitol into the lateral ventricle of water-replete sheep did not alter renal Na excretion but induced a water diuresis. These data indicate that during dehydration, renal Na excretion may be under the control of the brain. The pathway(s) from brain to kidney mediating this antinatriuretic effect are n…

Oral exposure of sheep to the airdried, aerial portions of Thamnosma texana (Dutchman's breeches) resulted in severe photosensitization. Sheep fed the plant at 9 or 12 g/kg of body weight/day and held in direct sunlight exhibited signs of phototoxicosis within 24 to 48 hours. The clinical signs manifested were increased body temperature; photophobia; edema of the muzzle, ears, and vulva; keratoconjunctivitis with edema of the cornea; and exudative dermatitis of the skin of the ears, muzzle, and vulva. Lesser dosages of the plant produced similar effects after several days, except that corneal …

Ammi majus (bishop's weed) grows on the coastal region of southern United States and in other parts of the world. This plant causes severe photosensitization in livestock and probably contributes to the severe photosensitization outbreaks seen in Texas. Sheep were fed finely ground seed of A majus via stomach tube at dose rates of 1, 2, 4, and 8 g/kg of body weight and exposed to sunlight. The single dose of 8 g/kg produced severe clinical signs (in 24 to 48 hours): cloudy cornea, conjunctivokeratitis, photophobia, and edema of the muzzle, ears, and vulva. Daily dosing at 2 and 4 g/kg produced…

Chronic frontal sinusitis and osteolysis in a herd of desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) in Zion National Park, Utah, was attributed to bacterial infection secondary to aberrant nasal bot migration. Analysis of skulls and live adult sheep (equal to 1 year old) showed that 9 to 22 animals were affected. One ram and 1 ewe were treated by trephination and irrigation. Treatment was successful for the ewe, but not for the ram. Radiography, thermography, and blood profiles were used in an attempt to find a way to diagnose sinusitis in its early stages; at this point, only thermography sh…

The frequency of fascioliasis in sheep of south-western Jutland has been determined on the basis of slaughterhouse registration of infected livers over a 5-year period (1969-1973). The average yearly percentage of adult sheep found to be infected ranged from 83.9 to 91.2%, whereas less than 1 % of the slaughtered lambs proved infected. The high infection percentage among adult animals and the strikingly low frequency among slaughter lambs could be explained by the characteristic management system of the marshland: In summer the sheep graze the dike and the foreland on its seaward side, and in …

Continuous monitoring of the foetal electrocorticogram, eye movements and heart rate in ewes during the last month of gestation showed rapid placental transfer from the mother to the foetus of phenothiazine derivatives (acepromazine maleate), short-acting barbiturates (thiopental sodium) and narcotic analgesics (meperidine). Acepromazine and thiopental partially disrupted the foetal sleep cycle by synchronization of the ECoG for 1-2 h but increased the heart rate for 2-3 h. The effects of meperidine were similar but lasted only 5-10 min for the ECoG and less than 0.5 h for the heart rate.

West African Dwarf sheep were challenged with a low mouse brain-passaged Rift Valley fever virus (Ib-AR 55172) isolated from Nigeria. Viraemia, mild febrile reaction and neutralising antibodies were demonstrated in inoculated animals.

Human lymphocytes of known B or T derivation were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after rosetting with SRBC. After collection of the cells onto silver membranes the samples were prepared for SEM by the critical point drying method. Sheep RBC frequently underwent sphero-echinocyte transformation and multiple projections extended from their surfaces. This was readily noticeable after storage of SRBC in the cold and washing in Hanks, but more prominent after rosetting. These erythrocyte surface alterations were less apparent when freshly withdrawn cells were used. Sponta…

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease that causes cognitive, movement, behavioral, and sleep disturbances, which over time result in progressive disability and eventually death. Clinical translation of novel therapeutics and imaging probes could be accelerated by additional testing in well-characterized large animal models of HD. The major goal of our preliminary cross-sectional study is to demonstrate the feasibility and utility of the unique transgenic sheep model of HD (OVT73) in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. PET imaging studies were performed in healthy mer…
