Neurogenic inflammation and sensitivity to environmental chemicals.

Neurogenic inflammation as a pathway distinct from antigen-driven, immune-mediated inflammation may play a pivotal role in understanding a broad class of environmental health problems resulting from chemical exposures. Recent progress in understanding the mediators, triggers, and regulation of neurogenic inflammation is reviewed. Evidence for and speculations about a role for neurogenic inflammation in established disorders such as asthma, rhinitis, contact dermatitis, migraine headache, and rheumatoid arthritis are presented. The sick building syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity syndro

The relationship between susceptibility to nausea and vomiting and the possession of conditioned food aversions.

Because nausea and vomiting play an important role in the formation of conditioned food aversions, individual differences in susceptibility to nausea and vomiting may contribute to interindividual variation in conditioned food aversion acquisition. Two surveys reveal that, among female participants, self-reported motion sickness susceptibility is positively correlated with the number of conditioned food aversions possessed, but no such correlation appears among male participants.

Influence of Inosine on Cerebral Hemodynamics in Space Motion Sickness in Experimental Animals.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness occurs worldwide in healthy individuals regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender. It is an acute disorder; it can also present as a chronic disorder in some individuals. Motion sickness not only includes vomiting and nausea, but also includes other features such as pallor of varying degrees, cold sweating, headache, drowsiness, increased salivation, and cranial pain, which are severe. Some of the other assessment scales can interpret sickness on exposure to virtual or visual stimulation and while travelling in different types of transport. AIM: The aim of our resear

The effect of complex double-axis rotation model on GABAergic neurons in caudal ventrolateral medulla of rats along the vestibulo-sympathetic reflex pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness is a common physiological disorder induced by with unusual movement exposure, characterized by conflicting motion signals that trigger vestibulo-sympathetic reflexes (VSR). These reflexes mediate autonomic responses to motion-induced stress. Previous studies have implicated the vestibular nucleus complex and the caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM) in VSR modulation. GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS), plays a key role in both cardiovascular regulation and vestibular function. However, the specifi

Dysbaric osteonecrosis of the humeral head in a patient with type 2 decompressive sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Dysbaric osteonecrosis, albeit rare, have been reported in patients with decompression sickness. We report a patient with dysbaric osteonecrosis, diagnosed 60 days after presenting with decompression sickness. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old, previously fit and healthy male, noted his tank running out of air at approximately 40-50 m while diving, surfaced rapidly before losing consciousness. Upon gaining consciousness, he noted loss of power on all four limbs. He completed 26 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Magnetic resonance (MR) of the spine noted T2 abnormality in t

Acute mountain sickness induced diabetic ketoacidosis managed with hemodialysis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The risk of developing ketoacidosis in patients with type 1 diabetes at high altitude is high. Anorexia associated with acute mountain sickness, dehydration and additional exercise associated with climbing exacerbates the generation of ketones and the development of ketoacidosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old gentleman with known history of uncontrolled type 1 diabetes mellitus trekked to Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 3440 m and became unwell. He developed altered sensorium and shortness of breath. He ingested eight tablets of acetazolamide (250 mg each) to address thes

The effects of captopril on lipopolysaccharide-induced sickness behaviors in rats.

Neuro-immune mediators play an important role in the development of sickness behaviors. In the present study, the effect of captopril on sickness behaviors caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was studied in the rats. The animals were randomized into the following groups: control, sham, 10 mg kg-1 captopril - LPS (Capto 10-LPS), 50 mg kg-1 captopril - LPS (Capto 50-LPS), and 100 mg kg-1 captopril - LPS (Capto 100-LPS). Behavioral tests including open-field (OF), elevated plus maze (EPM) and forced swimming (FS) test were performed, and the serum level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) was assessed. In OF,

Minocycline-induced autoimmune syndromes: an overview.

OBJECTIVE: To increase awareness of minocycline-induced autoimmune syndromes. METHODS: Review of relevant publications from the American and European literature. RESULTS: Four minocycline-induced syndromes have been described in 82 patients: serum sickness, drug-induced lupus, autoimmune hepatitis, and vasculitis. Aside from sporadic cases of serum sickness, all other syndromes occurred in patients treated for acne. Drug-induced lupus and hepatitis were by far the most common events (66 cases). Except for serum sickness, which presented shortly (mean, 16 days) after minocycline, the autoimmu

Illusory self-motion and motion sickness: a model for brain-gut interactions and nausea.

Motion sickness provides a unique setting for the study of nausea. Studies of illusory self-motion have linked nausea and objective measures of gastric dysrhythmias and the stress hormones vasopressin and epinephrine. Electrogastrographic methods utilize Ag-AgCl electrodes placed on the abdominal surface in the epigastric region to record electrogastrograms (EGGs), a noninvasive measure of gastric myoelectrical activity. The EGG frequencies of interest are the normal range (2.4-3.6 cpm), tachygastrias (3.6-9.9 cpm), and bradygastrias (1.0-2.4 cpm), and duodenal respiratory frequencies (10.0-15

Grandparents and siblings of children with congenital heart disease.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study of the process of grandparent involvement with siblings of preschool children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. BACKGROUND: An increasing number of grandparents are involved in parental or near-parental roles with their grandchildren. Most research concerns grandparent involvement due to parental issues (e.g. teenage pregnancy, mental illness, addiction). Some research addresses grandparent involvement when their grandchild is ill. Grandparents''double concern' for both their adult children and their ill grandchildren is reported in the literature. I

Characterising disability in patients with long COVID-does gender matter? an analytic cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID affects patients' daily functioning and activity participation. However, gender-specific differences remain insufficiently explored despite well-documented effects of gender on health outcomes. This study examines gender differences in sociodemographic characteristics, employment status, sick leave, and mental fatigue among individuals with long COVID. Furthermore, this study explores self-reported and prioritised problems with activities of daily living (ADL) across genders and compares patterns between women and men. We hypothesised that traditional gender roles would

Predictors of prolonged sickness absence after work injuries: a retrospective study using Tukey's Fence in 66,658 Hong Kong workers.

OBJECTIVES: To identify key predictors of prolonged sickness absence among workers with occupational injuries in Hong Kong, with a focus on demographic, occupational, and injury-related factors. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 66,658 occupational injury cases managed by a major rehabilitation coordination provider in Hong Kong, representing approximately 20% of all such cases in the region between 2003 and 2020. Prolonged absence outliers were defined as cases of sickness absence exceeding 129 days, based on Tukey’s Fence, a non-parametric method based on interquartile range.

Ascending caudal medullary catecholamine pathways drive sickness-induced deficits in exploratory behavior: brain substrates for fatigue?

Immune challenges can lead to marked behavioral changes, including fatigue, reduced social interest, anorexia, and somnolence, but the precise neuronal mechanisms that underlie sickness behavior remain elusive. Part of the neurocircuitry influencing behavior associated with illness likely includes viscerosensory nuclei located in the caudal brainstem, based on findings that inactivation of the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) can prevent social withdrawal. These brainstem nuclei contribute multiple neuronal projections that target different components of autonomic and stress-related neurocircuitry.

Nursing sickness in the mink--a metabolic mystery or a familiar foe?

Nursing sickness, the largest single cause of mortality in adult female mink (Mustela vison), is an example of a metabolic disorder, which develops when the demands for lactation require extensive mobilization of body energy reserves. The condition is characterized by progressive weight loss, emaciation, and dehydration with high concentrations of glucose and insulin in the blood. Morbidity due to nursing sickness can be as high as 15% with mortality around 8%, but the incidence is known to vary from year to year. Stress has been shown to trigger the onset of the disease and old females and fe

Self-inflicted eye injury.

UNLABELLED: Individuals with a factitious ocular disorder feign or exaggerate having an eye injury or intentionally produce an eye injury so as to assume the role of a sick person. We report two cases of self-inflicted ocular injury using needle-like foreign bodies and razor that represent possible diagnoses of Munchausen syndrome. Both patients presented with different clinical pictures that misguided the clinical diagnosis and delayed proper management. Although self-inflicted ocular injuries are rare, ophthalmologists should be aware of the possibility of their existence, particularly when

Reprogramming of host energy metabolism mediated by the TNF-iNOS-HIF-1α axis plays a key role in host resistance to Plasmodium infection.

TNF has a dual effect in Plasmodium infection, bolstering the host's immune defense while also inducing sickness behavior. Here, we confirm that TNF signaling hampers physical activity, food intake, and energy expenditure while enhancing glucose uptake by the liver and spleen, as well as controlling parasitemia in Plasmodium chabaudi (Pc)-infected mice. We also report that TNF is required for expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α), expression of glucose transporter GLUT1, and enhanced glycolysis in monocytic cells from Pc-inf

Disruption of circadian rhythms in synaptic activity of the suprachiasmatic nuclei by African trypanosomes and cytokines.

Disturbances in biological rhythms pose a major disease problem, not the least in the aging population. Experimental sleeping sickness, caused by Trypanosoma brucei brucei, in rats constitutes a unique and robust chronic model for studying mechanisms of such disturbances. The spontaneous postsynaptic activity was recorded in slice preparations of the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), which contain the master pacemaker for circadian rhythms in mammals, from trypanosome-infected rats. The excitatory synaptic events, which in normal rats show a daily variation, were reduced in frequency, while the in

Support or Scrutiny? Experiencing Workplace Well-Being Interviews.

PURPOSE: Workplace well-being interviews are increasingly used as a preventive measure to reduce sickness absence and support employee well-being. However, little is known about how these interviews are experienced in practice or how interactions between employees and line managers shape these experiences. This study explored how interactions between employees and line managers shape their experiences of workplace well-being interviews in Danish public sector workplaces. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with six line managers and nine em
