Laparoscopic surgery has generally been performed for digestive diseases. Many patients with colon cancer undergo laparoscopic procedures. The outcomes of laparoscopic colectomy and open colectomy are the same in terms of the long-time survival. It is important to dissect the embryological plane to harvest the lymph nodes and to avoid bleeding during colon cancer surgery. The safety of laparoscopic management of adnexal masses in pregnancy has been documented. Herein we report laparoscopic removal during pregnancy of a cystically degenerated leiomyoma of the sigmoid colon, which had been mistaken for an adnexal mass. When smooth muscle gastrointestinal tumors are observed, it is important that they be characterized with appropriate markers so that postoperative treatment can be individualized to the patient.

A 53-year-old woman who was traveling in Australia was admitted to a local hospital with pyrexia and diarrhea. Megacolon was diagnosed from an X-ray and an emergency operation was performed. However, the cause of megacolon was not clear, and the attempted operation ended in a simple laparotomy. Sigmoid cancer was found 3 weeks after the first operation and a colostomy was performed at the ascending colon. After the second operation, she returned to Japan and was thereafter admitted to our hospital. Total colonoscopy before the third surgery (sigmoidectomy) revealed erosive mucosa but no tumor.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature has recorded the preponderance of hyperplastic over neoplastic polyps. This study evaluated the histopathologic characteristics of colonic polyps, excised during colonoscopic polypectomy, and further determined their relationship to age, location, and gender.
METHODS: Of 5132 colonoscopies reviewed between 1976 and 1999, 757 were performed on 582 patients who had polyp removal. Patients with previous colon resection or incomplete cecal intubation were excluded.
RESULTS: The mean age was 67 +/- 11 years for men and 66 +/- 11 years for women. Of the 1050 lesions

An 85-year-old man with a clinical and x-ray picture consistent with a large bowel obstruction had a large left inguinal hernia with an incarcerated loop of sigmoid colon containing a small annular constricting colon carcinoma. Colonic obstruction due to inguinal hernia alone is so rare that a thorough evaluation should be done preoperatively in any patient believed to have colonic obstruction due to inguinal hernia.

We report the case of a patient bearing a sigmoid colon carcinoma, stage IV, who after 11 months of antiblastic therapy, having completed a dose of 81,000 mg of 5-FU and CCNU, suffered a myocardial infarct. We attribute this complication to 5-FU. Due to the fact that the coronary angiogram did not confirm the arteriosclerotic nature of the lesion, we suggest that it could have been caused by an endoarteritis, resulting from an immuno-allergic or toxic cumulative process.
