Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis comprises a group of lysosomal diseases transmitted by autosomal recessive inheritance. Often unrecognized, this disease should be evoked in children or adolescents with blindness due to retinal pigmentation, dementia and myoclonal seizures. Retinal pigmentation is lacking in adults. The characteristic feature is an accumulation of fluorescent lipopigments deposited within cells, especially neurons. Histology examination gives the diagnosis based on the ultrastructure of skin biopsies and identification of the disease-specific lysosomal inclusions. The disease ca

Two different red pigments used for tattooing were found to give rise to inflammatory reactions in the skin. No inorganic component was found in the pigments. NMR and MS analyses elucidated the molecular structures of two different organic compounds. A bright red pigment was found to be an aromatic azo-derivative, and a red-violet pigment was found to be linear quinacridone. A strong exposure to UV-light was reported in most cases prior to the onset of the inflammation.

Vitiligo is an acquired skin disorder caused by the disappearance of pigment cells from the epidermis, and results in well defined white patches that are often symmetrically distributed. The lack of melanin pigment makes the lesional skin more sensitive to sunburn. Vitiligo can be cosmetically disfiguring and is a stigmatizing condition, leading to serious psychological problems in daily life. It occurs worldwide in about 1% of the population, mostly between the ages of 10-30 years, and as often in males as in females. The cause is unknown, but might involve genetic factors, autoimmunity, toxi

The visual pigments in the rods do not have a special absorption that gives them maximal sensitivity. The visual pigments of "deep sea" fish are an exception for these do match the environmental light to give maximum sensitivity. At the low light intensities at which the rods operate, it is the number of photons that go to make up each element of the image that limits the ability of the eye to discriminate detail and contrast. Chemically induced isomerisation of the visual pigment molecule may cause spurious visual signals that limit the ability of the eye to detect contrasts in very dim light

Melanin, the natural pigment found in human skin, absorbs and protects against the ultraviolet (UV) components of sunlight. Melanin production (melanogenesis) is increased by exposure to sunlight, causing a darker skin colour which is regarded as aesthetically pleasing by many humans, who therefore expose themselves to large amounts of potentially damaging sunlight. We have found that topically applied all-trans retinoic acid, a metabolic derivative of vitamin A, greatly enhances UV light-induced melanogenesis: the same preparation on its own had no effect on skin pigmentation. An orally admin…

The ear of the mouse is useful for studying the effects of ultraviolet light on epidermal pigment cells. The quantity of light penetrating into the skin causing an inflammatory response can be assessed easily by measuring with an engineering calipers the swelling of the ear. The inflammatory response of the ear exhibits a linear relationship to the dose of light delivered. We observed that doses of shortwave ultraviolet light which are noninflammatory when repeated at daily intervals induce moderate to severe inflammation. Small doses of psoralen and prolonged exposure to UVA (PUVA) were more

Dermoscopy is a non-invasive technique widely used to aid in the characterization and diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions. Recently, it has also been employed for the evaluation of non-pigmented skin tumours, and inflammatory and infectious cutaneous diseases. Although the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis is confirmed by the demonstration of amastigotes in infected skin or by the growth of promastigotes in culture medium, dermoscopy could be useful as a further diagnostic test. We report a patient with a nodular lesion located on the right cheek for almost two years. The lesion was clinica

BACKGROUND: Melanocyte number and the amount of melanin pigment are related to diagnosis and treatment of pigmentary skin diseases. Various histologic methods are used, such as Fontana-Masson stain for melanin pigment or immunohistochemical stain for melanocytes. Recently, computerized image analysis has been applied to many fields to avoid interobserver bias. In this study, we applied a computerized image analysis to assess the melanin content and melanocyte density of human epidermis.
METHODS: We evaluated the skin biopsy specimens (paraffin blocks) from normal human skin (33 +/- 6.6, n = 1

BACKGROUND: Objective determination of skin color has become an essential requirement in managing pigmentary disorders including vitiligo. The readings of available devices can be influenced by factors such as surrounding temperature, vasodilation/constriction, and skin surface properties. Our aim was to investigate the influence of hair color and length, skin stretching, incomplete contact of the device with the skin, and the pressure with which the device is applied to the test area on skin color determination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dermacatch® was used to determine the influence of hair c

The influx of immigrants from outside the Western world, has led to a wider spectrum of dermatological diseases seen by doctors in Denmark. We present four case histories, in which the disease was brought to Denmark from the patient's land of origin. Tropical diseases may present as a skin disease as such, or a generalised disease with skin manifestations, the commonest signs being ulcers, papules, exanthema, changes in pigmentation, and itching.

A nulliparous female aged 26 years, who presented with long-standing sore and cracked soles, showed congenital anonychia, long-standing hyper-and-hypo-pigmentation in axillae and groins, dry palmar and plantar skin as well as other skin and hair abnormalities. She gave a family history of nail, hair and pigmentary abnormalities and examination of living affected relatives confirmed this. This appears to be a hitherto undescribed autosomal dominant syndrome.

Background Dermoscopy can potentially obviate the need for skin biopsy, particularly at cosmetically sensitive sites such as the face. While dermoscopic features of various skin diseases are well described, information on dermoscopic findings in normal skin is limited. Objectives To study the dermoscopic features of the normal face. Methods Two-hundred subjects without any facial skin disease were included in the study. Dermoscopic findings of different facial sites (forehead, bilateral zygomatic areas, bilateral cheeks, nose and chin) were evaluated using a hand-held dermoscope (Heine Delta 3

Most pigment cells during embryogenesis arise from the cranial or truncal portion of the neural crest and migrate to the skin, hair bulbs, choroid of the eye, the inner ear, leptomeninges, and other tissues. Cells of the retinal pigment epithelium come from a different source, namely, the primitive forebrain, and are involved in the formation of the retina and the optic nerves and tracts. Most pigment cells in all parts of the body seem to be constant in number and function until approximately middle age (the fourth or fifth decade of life). Thereafter, the number of melanocytes in the skin, h

A safe, easy, and effective outpatient modality for the treatment of various cutaneous lesions such as hemangiomas and decorative tattoos has long been sought. The argon laser has proved satisfactory for such treatment of port-wine hemangiomas, capillary/cavernous hemangiomas, telangiectasia, and decorative tattoos as well as a variety of cutaneous pigmented lesions. The intense laser light is attracted and absorbed by pigmented skin lesions producing heat that selectively destroys the intradermal pathologic condition and spares overlying skin. Hemangiomas and tattoos have undergone satisfacto

Any mismatch between the innate cutaneous pigmentation and lifetime behaviour regarding sun exposure is a serious challenge for the skin. Sunbaths and sun parlours combine their deleterious effects. The risks for inflammatory reactions (sunburns and other photoreactions), chronic photoageing, skin field photocancerogenesis, some equivocal tumours (actinic keratosis, actinic porokeratosis,...) and overt skin cancers (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma) are common conditions. For the public at large and medias, sunscreens aim at preventing these issues. Clearly, each of thes

BACKGROUND: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare disorder produced by a genetic defect in the repair of DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. The early diagnosis of malignant skin tumours is crucial in the survival of patients with XP, but this is not easy even for experienced dermatologists due to the presence of a high number of actinic lesions. Dermoscopy is a new diagnostic method that increases the diagnostic accuracy for skin tumours.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical and dermoscopic features of different benign and malignant lesions [focusing on malignant melanoma, basal cell

Dermatoscopy (reflective light microscopy, dermoscopy) is a noninvasive technique with high sensitivity and specificity for in vivo visualization of melanocytic and non-melanocytic pigmented and non-pigmented skin tumors. To this end, knowledge of various algorithms and scores is important. The first part of this contribution in continuing education deals with differentiation between melanocytic and non-melanocytic skin tumors on the trunk and extremities. The second part describes the different diagnostic dermatoscopic algorithms.
