Changes in motor and sensory nerve conduction parameters with temperature in normal and diseased nerve.

The effects of temperature on conventional motor and sensory nerve conduction parameters were studied in normals and in some pathological conditions. Surface stimulating and recording electrodes were used to examine the function of the median nerve. The motor and sensory conduction velocities, the parameters of compound muscle action and sensory nerve potentials were correlated with skin temperature. In the control subjects all nerve conduction parameters changed with temperature. These findings were similar to those published previously, but the mean slope for MCV was lower than that reported…

Local heating, but not indirect whole body heating, increases human skeletal muscle blood flow.

For decades it was believed that direct and indirect heating (the latter of which elevates blood and core temperatures without directly heating the area being evaluated) increases skin but not skeletal muscle blood flow. Recent results, however, suggest that passive heating of the leg may increase muscle blood flow. Using the technique of positron-emission tomography, the present study tested the hypothesis that both direct and indirect heating increases muscle blood flow. Calf muscle and skin blood flows were evaluated from eight subjects during normothermic baseline, during local heating of

Brain temperature and limits on transcranial cooling in humans: quantitative modeling results.

Selective brain cooling (SBC) of varying strengths has been demonstrated in a number of mammals and appears to play a role in systemic therm … r hot (40 degrees C), and sweat evaporation rate: 0, 0.25, or 0.50 l x m(-2) x h(-1). The resulting skin temperatures of the model ranged from 31.8 degrees C to 40.2 degrees C, values which are consistent with data obtained from the literature. Cerebral temperatures were generally insensitive to surface conditions (air temperature and evaporation rate), which affe …

Effects of droplet velocity, diameter, and film height on heat removal during cryogen spray cooling.

Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is an effective method to reduce or eliminate epidermal damage during laser treatment of various dermatoses. This study sought to determine the effects of specific cryogen properties on heat removal. Heat removal was quantified using an algorithm that solved an inverse heat conduction problem from internal temperature measurements made within a skin phantom. A nondimensional parameter, the Weber number, characterized the combined effects of droplet velocity, diameter, and surface tension. CSC experiments with laser irradiation were conducted on ex vivo human skin sa

Impact of acute caffeine intake on local tolerance to cold before and after total sleep deprivation.

Total sleep deprivation (TSD) alters local cold tolerance and could thus increase the risk of cold injury. We evaluated the impact of acute caffeine intake, the main countermeasure to TSD-related deleterious effects, on local cold tolerance before and after TSD. Thirty-six healthy subjects underwent two TSD protocols (i.e., continuous wakefulness), with randomized crossover intake of acute caffeine or placebo (2.5 mg/kg) administered twice during wakefulness. Before and after 33 h of TSD, finger (index and annular) temperature and skin blood flow were assessed during cold-water immersion (CWI,

[Development of an improved system for monitoring the peripheral circulation and its application. Part 2. Its application to the cold water immersion test in workers using vibratory tools].

Using an improved system for measuring skin blood flow by the thermal clearance curve, the change of the skin blood flow in the finger (finger blood flow) of the workers using vibratory tools induced by 10 degrees C cold water immersion for 10 min was observed in order to clarify the pathogenesis of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) from the aspect of peripheral circulatory function and simultaneously to demonstrate the efficiency of the system. The subjects constituted a group of 10 workers with VWF (VWF group) and 10 healthy workers without a history of hand-arm symptoms (control group).

Responses in cutaneous vascular tone to transient hypoxia in man.

The study was undertaken to determine the changes in skin circulation in response to systemic hypoxia. Transient hypoxia was induced in 24 healthy subjects by breathing 8% O2 in N2 for 90 s. Arterial oxygen tension was measured transcutaneously (tcpO2), photoplethysmography was employed to monitor changes in cutaneous vessel tone, and respiratory tidal volumes were measured by a Fleisch pneumotachograph. End tidal CO2 concentration, ECG, heart rate, finger skin resistance, and finger skin temperature were monitored continuously as well. Multi-unit skin sympathetic activity was recorded in the …

Forced convection around the human head.

1. The parameters determining the forced convective heat loss from a heated body in an air stream are outlined. 2. Local forced convective heat transfer distributions around the human head and a heated vertical cylinder at various wind speeds in a climatic chamber have been found to be similar and related to the aerodynamic flow patterns. 3. From the local convective coefficient distribution, values for the overall convective coefficient h-c at various wind speeds have been evaluated. These are seen to agree closely with existing whole body coefficients determined by other methods.

Neuroendocrine, behavioral, cardiovascular and autonomic responses to acute and repeated restraint stress in male rats.

Biological systems seem to be differently affected by stress, resulting in expression of both adaptative and maladaptive responses. The present study aimed to compare the neuroendocrine (plasma corticosterone), behavioral (anxiogenic- and depressive-like effects), cardiovascular (blood pressure and heart rate) and autonomic (tail skin temperature and frequency-domain analysis of blood pressure and pulse interval variabilities) responses observed during an acute (single 2 h session) versus the 21st [2 h/day for 21 consecutive days) restraint stress session. We found that acute restraint stress …

Comparison of density and output of sweat gland in tropical Africans and temperate Koreans.

Modification of sweating could be due to changes in activated sweat gland density (ASGD) and/or activated sweat gland output (ASGO). The present study determined regional and inter-ethnic differences in ASGD and ASGO during passive heating between tropical natives (African, n=22) and temperate natives (Republic of Korean, n=25). Heat load was carried out by immersing the half body into a hot water bath for 30min. Tympanic temperature (Tty) and skin temperature (Ts) were measured. Mean body temperature (mTb) was calculated. Sudomotor activities including sweat onset time, sweat rate, ASGD, and …

Finding and recognition of the bovine host by the cercariae of Schistosoma spindale.

The cercaria of Schistosoma spindale finds and identifies its bovine host with at least five behavioral phases. (1) Dispersal in and selection of midwater and water surface as the microhabitat are achieved by an intermittent swimming behavior with a weak geonegative but not photopositive orientation. (2) Attachments are stimulated by host-specific higher temperatures of the substrate but not by chemical host signals. (3) Remaining of the attached cercariae on the substrate is stimulated by host-specific higher temperatures of the substrate; chemical host signals have no effect. (4) The creepin
