[Head injuries in patients with pre-existing skull defects].

The mechanism of impact head injuries has generally been discussed on the basis of the cranium is a rigid box completely filled with incompressible contents. In this paper, two cases of head injuries in patients with severe craniectomized skull defects are reported and their conditions are discussed. The 1st case was a 46 year-old female with a large frontoparietal skull defect following surgery on a brain tumor. While hospitalized, she fell down from her bed (50 cm in height) and suffered strong impact on the craniectomized area. From immediately after the injury, there was flaccid hemiparesi…

[Enlarging fractures of skull bones. Apropos of 2 cases].

The authors report two cases of children, who had a severe head injury with large skull fracture. If neurological evolution was good, on the other hand, skull fracture went on to develop, to give a bone defect with a leptomeningeal cyst of arachnoidal origin, as it is pointed out by the classical authors. The authors insist upon the specificity of this entity in childhood, and upon the necessity to observe by repeated clinical and radiological examinations any young child who have a large skull fracture.

Anterior skull base surgery for benign and malignant disease.

Teamwork between the head and neck surgeon and the neurosurgeon utilizing the craniofacial resection technique greatly extends the frontiers of surgery for tumors of the anterior half of the skull base. Tumors for which this technique may be used include benign and malignant tumors arising in the frontal bone or frontal sinus, nasal vault, ethmoid, maxilla, sphenoid or orbit. Selected nasopharyngeal lesions such as angiofibromas with anterior or middle fossa extensions and sphenoid or clival chordomas may also be approached in this manner. This report evaluates the surgical techniques currentl…

Cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea from massive osteolysis of the skull.

Involvement of the skull by a rare disorder-massive osteolysis-led to CSF rhinorrhoea and meningitis. This is believed to be the first time that such a case has been reported.

[Contrast-free radiological diagnosis of the skull (author's transl)].

From the broad spectrum of contrast-free radiological diagnosis of the skull, diseases with asymmetrical appearance of the face were selected and the syndromes similar to them are presented from the differential diagnostic point of view. Asymmetry of the head very frequently indicates a disease of the skull area and should be subjected to appropriate diagnostic investigations.

Further studies on skull growth in achondroplasic (cn) mice.

The morphology of the basioccipital, basisphenoid and mandibular bones in achondroplasic (cn/cn) mice was compared with that of normal siblings. The two bones of the cranial base were markedly reduced in length but not in width. The percentage reduction in the basisphenoid was twice that in the basioccipital bone and of the same magnitude as that previously observed in the long bones of the limbs. This difference may arise because the basisphenoid, like the long bones, grows in length from two cartilaginous growth sites while the basioccipital grows from one cartilaginous and one periosteal si

Acute spreading osteomyelitis of the skull complicating frontal sinusitis.

Three patients with acute spreading osteomyelitis of the skull complicating a frontal sinusitis are presented. The pathology and clinical features of this complication are discussed. Early rigorous antibiotic treatment accompanied by surgical intervention to drain purulent collections in the sinuses and scalp has been effective in controlling the disease. One patient required a craniectomy for removal of an area of chronic ostemoyelitis. The other two patients maintained on antibiotics for three months have shown no evidence of progression to chronic osteomyelitis and have remained free from r…

Skull growth in achondroplasic (cn) mice; a craniometric study.

Skull morphology in achondroplasic (cn/cn) mice was compared with that of normal siblings in order to determine the effects of this chondrodystrophy on skull growth, particular attention being given to dimensions reflecting growth at the synchondroses of the cranial base, the nasal septal cartilage and the condylar cartilage of the mandible. The central section of the cranial base (basicranial axis) was reduced by 25 percent, the length of the viscerocranium by 18 percent and the length of the condylar process by 11 percent. The evidence indicates that these reductions are due to diminished gr…

Functional role of skull lymphoid structures in CNS immunosurveillance.

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that the central nervous system (CNS) is not disconnected from the peripheral immune system; however, precisely how the adaptive immune system surveils the CNS remains a critical question. Recent findings reveal that channels between the skull and the dura mater facilitate the exchange of cerebrospinal fluid and immune cells between the CNS and skull bone marrow of mice under both homeostatic and disease conditions1-6. Skull bone marrow functions as a source of immune cells for the CNS5, yet its role in CNS antigen-specific adaptive immune responses remains u…

Single-layer Endoscopic Repair of Anterior Skull Base Defects.

This article reviews contemporary strategies for single-layer endoscopic repair of anterior skull base cerebrospinal fluid leaks, which are important for small defects and when multiple layers using vascularized tissue options are not available. Successful reconstruction requires restoring a watertight barrier between the intracranial compartment and the sinonasal tract, with technique selection guided by defect size, location, flow dynamics, and tissue availability. When appropriately selected, patients undergoing single-layer endoscopic repair achieve closure rates exceeding 90%. The article…

Cretaceous Antarctic bird skull elucidates early avian ecological diversity.

Fossils representing Cretaceous lineages of crown clade birds (Aves) are exceptionally rare but are crucial to elucidating major ecological … of Anseriformes (waterfowl)7-9, or outside Aves altogether10. Here we report a new, nearly complete skull of Vegavis that provides new insight into its feeding ecology and exhibits morphologies that support placement among waterfowl within crown-group birds. Vegavis has an avian beak (absence of teeth and reduced maxilla) and brain shape (hyperinflated …

Unusual Skull Metastasis From Thyroid Cancer: A Case Report.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma is a common condition, but skull metastases are extremely rare. This case involves an older adult who presented with a progressively growing mass in the skull that also involved the orbit. Imaging revealed a lesion measuring 85x76x91 mm, causing compression of the left frontal lobe and midline deviation. The patient underwent craniotomy with tumor resection and orbital exenteration, which led to the diagnosis of metastasis from papillary thyroid carcinoma. A total thyroidectomy was later performed, but histopathology found no evidence of malignancy in the thyroid gl…

Robotic Skull Contouring for Facial Reconstruction-A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Orbital trauma is a complex facial injury that can result in significant morbidity secondary to functional and cosmetic changes. Autologous calvarial bone grafting remains the gold standard in addressing orbital fractures, offering good biocompatibility and robust long-term outcomes. However, manual carving of the bone grafts is time-consuming and can increase the risk of inaccuracies that can affect cosmesis and function. OBJECTIVE: The authors set out to evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of robotic bone graft carving in the repair of orbital defects. METHODS: Orbital defects
