The present study examined the sleep-wake cycle effects of microinjections of yohimbine, an adrenergic antagonist, and atropine, a cholinergic antagonist, into the cerebral ventricle of clomipramine-induced depressed rats. Yohimbine microinjection caused a significant reduction in the total duration and the number of REM sleep episodes compared to control saline injections. Atropine microinjection caused a significant reduction in the total duration and the number of REM sleep episodes without changing the REM sleep latency compared to control saline microinjection. These results show for the

Sleep patterns were recorded during 5 weeks of chronic treatment with sodium barbital and after abrupt cessation of drug administration. Sodium barbital was administered intragastrically to adult cats twice daily in doses to produce a peak response of gross ataxia ("low-dose" barbiturate treatment). Sleep stages were scored from EEG, EOG, and neck EMG recordings from chronically implanted electrodes. Sleep was monitored continuously for 48 h once each week during barbital administration and continuously for 7 to 10 days during withdrawal. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during barbital treatmen

Three cases of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) were examined by polysomnography to assess the brainstem function, and to determine the causes of the neurological manifestations and sudden death in this syndrome. In the two older cases, the amount of slow wave and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the REM density and the frequency of REM bursts were decreased. In the youngest case, symmetrical phasic movements of all four limbs were observed at all sleep stages other than REM sleep. Although movements other than these symmetrical body movements appeared to be normal in this case, the frequency of twit

Narcoleptic patients were compared to idiopathic hypersomniac patients and REM hypersomnia patients with regard to nocturnal sleep disruption. Results showed specificity of the narcoleptic sleep pattern and a possible correlation between REM fragmentation and cataplexy. Patients with and without periodic movements in sleep (PMS) were compared and no difference was found in their nocturnal sleep pattern, suggesting that PMS is not the major determinant of sleep disruption previously described in narcoleptic patients. Finally, nocturnal sleep disruption was treated with gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GH

Parasomnias are a group of sleep disorders that are characterized by the presence of undesirable behavioral, experiential, or autonomic nervous system events during sleep initiation, within sleep, or during arousals from any stage of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) or rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During wakefulness and NREM sleep, the hypothalamus plays a central role in thermoregulation. REM sleep has a very distinct thermoregulatory response that is characterized by an inhibition of hypothalamic control over body temperature, with resulting poikilothermia. The role of the thermoregulatory f

Consolidation of extinction learning is a primary mechanism disrupted in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), associated with hypoactivity of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. A role for rapid eye movement (REM) sleep disturbances in this failure to consolidate extinction learning has been proposed. We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with simultaneous skin conductance response (SCR) measurements in 16 healthy participants during conditioning/extinction and later recall of extinction. The visual stimuli were basic geometric forms and electrical shocks f

The role of sleep in the relations between early-life trauma and the development of adverse psychological trajectories is relatively unknown and was the primary aim of the present study. Military veterans were evaluated for posttraumatic stress disorder, combat exposure, trauma history, sleep quality, disruptive nocturnal behaviors, and a subsample completed overnight polysomnography that yielded objectively measured sleep parameters. When relevant variables were controlled, increased earlier-life traumatic event exposure was associated with increased rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMs) fragmentat

Since the discovery of melatonin as the principal hormone of the pineal gland in 1963, scientists have come to recognize that melatonin is a "master hormone" involved in the control of circadian rhythms and other biological functions. Although little is known about the influence of the pineal gland on motor control, important clues may be obtained by considering the pattern of melatonin secretion during the sleep cycles and particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep when melatonin plasma levels are at their lowest. Since REM sleep is characterized by the occurrence of profound atonia w

BACKGROUND: Sleep complaints are common in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and are included in the DSM criteria. Polysomnographic studies conducted on small samples of subjects with specific traumas have yielded conflicting results. We therefore evaluated polysomnographic sleep disturbances in PTSD.
METHODS: A representative cohort of young-adult community residents followed-up for 10 years for exposure to trauma and PTSD was used to select a subset for sleep studies for 2 consecutive nights and the intermediate day. Subjects were selected from a large health maintenance organization and

OBJECTIVE: During the early follicular phase, sleep-related luteinizing hormone (LH) pulse initiation is positively associated with brief awakenings but negatively associated with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The relationship between sleep architecture and LH pulse initiation has not been assessed in other cycle stages or in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed concomitant frequent blood sampling (LH pulse analysis) and polysomnography on 8 normal women (cycle day 7-11) and 7 women with PCOS (at least cycle day 7).
RESULTS: In the normal women, the

OBJECTIVES:: Tinnitus is an auditory sensation in the absence of any external stimulus. It has a negative impact on quality of life and interferes with concentration, sleep, social activities, and even emotional stability. The aim of this study was to compare sleep architecture in patients with and without chronic subjective tinnitus.
METHODS:: This was an observational, noninterventional, and prospective study. The sample consisted of 50 individuals of both sexes aged 20 to 60 years. Twenty-five patients with tinnitus constituted the study group, and for comparison, a control group consistin

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To investigate the changes in cortical neural responses induced by external inputs during phasic rapid eye movement (p-REM) sleep.
METHODS: Single-pulse electrical stimulation (SPES) was directly applied to the human cortex during REM sleep through subdural electrodes, in seven patients who underwent invasive presurgical evaluation for intractable partial epilepsy. SPES was applied to parts of the cortex through the subdural electrodes, and induced cortical responses were recorded from adjacent and remote cortical areas. Phase-locked corticocortical-evoked potentials (CCEPs)

A new sleep research paradigm, the Narcoleptic Approach Paradigm (NAP), was developed to enable direct psychological and physiological investigations of isolated dream sleep (also called rapid eye movement or REM sleep) and nondream sleep (non-REM or NREM). Essential to NAP is the cooperation of individuals with narcolepsy, who frequently have REM sleep onset. Narcoleptic animals may also be used for more convenient and extensive physiological NAP investigations. Several cogent psychological and physiological design variations of the general NAP model are outlined and one investigation success

We examined the role of the amygdala in the modulation of sleep and ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves in the rat. The amygdala projects massively, via its central nucleus, into brainstem regions involved in alerting and in the generation of rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep and PGO waves. Electrical stimulation of the central nucleus of the amygdala during REM sleep increased PGO wave amplitude. Stimulation during non-REM sleep decreased PGO wave frequency. The results indicate that the amygdala has a role in modulating brainstem neural mechanisms underlying alerting during sleep.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep patterns were examined in nine unmedicated patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for a current manic episode (four men and five women) for two to four consecutive nights. Compared with age- and sex-matched normal control subjects, manic patients exhibited significantly decreased total recording period, decreased time spent asleep, increased time awake in the last two hours of recording, shortened rapid eye movement (REM) latency, increased REM activity, and increased REM density. These results suggest that mania is associated with marked disturbances of sleep

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate heart rate (HR) change and clinical characteristics in patients with neck myoclonus (NM), a physiological motor phenomenon occurring during sleep.
METHODS: For 18 consecutive patients in whom NM was confirmed from video-polysomnography, we analyzed 576 NMs. Change rate of HR at each 1 sec point towards the averaged HR in prior 5 sec period was calculated before and after all NM events.
RESULTS: Findings show NM events as more prevalent during REM sleep than during NREM sleep (83.9% vs. 16.1%). For NM without cortical arousal in REM and NREM sle

Sleep paralysis is rare in the elderly but may occur particularly in families suffering from this phenomenon. In a minority of patients with disorders of arousal, the episodes persist until the age of 70. Zolpidem and other medications may induce sleepwalking and sleep eating-related syndrome. Most patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) eventually develop Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Anti-IgLON5 disease includes abnormal behaviors in both nonrapid eye movement sleep and rapid eye movement sleep (REM) sleep. Restless legs syndrome prevalence increases wit
