Pigmented corneal rings in neonates with liver disease.

We performed eye examinations in neonates to determine whether pigmented corneal rings were present in infants with hepatic disease, as in adults. None of 16 control infants had pigmented corneal rings, but 10 (71%) of 14 infants with cholestatic liver disease had such rings. Most rings could be seen without slit lamp by direct inspection of the cornea. Furthermore, the rings appeared to resolve over time. Liver dysfunction tended to be more severe in patients with corneal rings. We speculate that abnormal tissue accumulation of copper may be present in many infants with cholestatic liver dise…

Inhibition of contact lens-induced corneal neovascularization in radial keratotomized rabbit eyes.

Cellulose acetate butyrate contact lenses were fitted for extended wear on 28 rabbits 6 weeks after radial keratotomy. Fourteen rabbits received 0.03% flurbiprofen to one eye and vehicle solution to the contralateral control eye, while the other 14 received 1% prednisolone acetate to one eye and vehicle solution to the contralateral control eye four times each day in a double-blind fashion. The eyes were photographed and graded weekly with a standardized slit-lamp grading method. After 6 weeks, inhibition of corneal neovascularization was found with flurbiprofen (p = 0.001), while there was a

Unilateral acorea turned cryptic microcoria with contralateral iris coloboma with cataract: a rare misdiagnosed anomaly.

Microcoria and acorea are uncommon congenital anomalies characterised by the abnormal development of the pupillary aperture. We report a rare and complex presentation in a male patient in his early 40 s: the right eye demonstrated a cryptic, rudimentary pupillary opening located inferiorly, associated with microphthalmia and retinal detachment, while the left eye exhibited a classic iris coloboma and dense cataract. The right eye showed complete pupillary agenesis refractory to pharmacologic dilation, with no light perception, while the left eye retained limited vision. Slit-lamp and ultrasono

[Treatment of early capsular blockage syndrome with Nd:YAG laser anterior capsulotomy containing neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet in a case].

A 62-year-old female patient presented with no improvement in vision 10 days after undergoing cataract extraction in the right eye. The unaided visual acuity in the right eye was 0.1, and examination with a slit lamp revealed the presence of the intraocular lens with an increased gap between the intraocular lens and the posterior capsule. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography showed a distance of 3.236 mm between the posterior capsule and the posterior surface of the intraocular lens. Based on the medical history, ocular examination, and auxiliary examinations, a diagnosis of right eye…

Nocardia keratitis after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).

We report the case of a female patient in her late 20s who visited the clinic with concerns about poor vision, redness, watering and a burning sensation in her left eye 2 weeks after undergoing a small incision lenticule extraction. She had no history of systemic illness or immunosuppressed status. On slit lamp examination, she was found to have corneal stromal infiltrates in the interface at multiple locations. Given the clinical diagnosis of microbial keratitis, corneal scraping of the interface infiltrate was performed and sent for microbiological examination revealing gram-positive, thin, …

Intraoperative Fibrinous Reaction During Phacoemulsification With Posterior Chamber Intraocular Lens Implantation.

This is a case report of a 67-year-old female who underwent phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and developed a rare fibrinous reaction intraoperatively. During surgery, the patient experienced poor dilation and iris tissue prolapse. Phacoemulsification and IOL insertion into the capsular bag were performed. A fibrinous reaction was noticed at the end of surgery and was managed excellently with triamcinolone. Postoperatively, the patient achieved visual acuity of 20/20, with no flare or fibrinous reaction observed on slit lamp examination. This case re…

Rare case of corneal keloid following radial keratotomy for myopia.

An adult male in his 50s presented with complaints of glare and gradual, painless, progressive diminution of vision in the right eye (RE). Visual acuity in RE was noted to be 2/60, and slit lamp biomicroscopy revealed a pearly grey-white elevated corneal opacity measuring 4 mm × 3 mm, obscuring the visual axis. There was no history of ocular trauma or infection. The patient had undergone bilateral radial keratotomy for myopia correction 25 years ago. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography imaging demonstrated increased corneal thickness of 1080 µm at the site of lesion and the height of…

Inadvertent retention of Descemet membrane after penetrating keratoplasty for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy.

A retained Descemet membrane pertains to a type of retrocorneal membrane-a well-known yet rare complication of penetrating keratoplasty. We present a case of retained Descemet membrane after penetrating keratoplasty for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. A 71-year-old woman presented to the ophthalmology clinic for loss of visual acuity. The previous year she had undergone phacoemulsification on both eyes, resulting in pseudophakic bullous keratopathy in the right eye; an uneventful penetrating keratoplasty was performed on the affected eye. The following day at follow-up, an undulated retrocor

Dirofilariasis in Vietnam: A case report and brief review.

This report describes a rare case of ophthalmic dirofilariasis in a 68-year-old woman with red and foreign body sensation in the pterygium on her right eye. Slit lamp examination demonstrated a long-slender worm moving in her pterygium. The worm was removed surgically and then identified as Diroflaria repens by sequence analysis of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU) gene. The situation of dirofilariasis in Vietnam has been reviewed. Since the first described case in 2010 there have been thirteen cases reported that suggested the emerging trend of the disease. Most of the documented cases of…

Smartphone-based Video of Demodex folliculorum In Biopsied Human Eyelash Follicles.

The ability of smartphone technology to document static microscopy images has been well documented and is gaining widespread use in ophthalmology, where slit-lamp biomicroscopy is frequently utilized. However, little has been described regarding the use of smartphone technology to relay video of tissue microscopy results to patients, particularly when a tissue sample integrates motility of organisms as a characteristic feature of the disease. Here, we describe the method to use smartphone video to document motility of Demodex folliculorum in human eyelashes, individual results of which can be
