Relieving distressed caregivers (ReDiCare study): study protocol of a randomized pragmatic trial.

BACKGROUND: Providing care for someone with a disease or chronic condition can have a negative psychological, physical, social, and economic impact upon informal caregivers. Despite the socio-economic relevance and more than three decades of caregiver intervention research only very few translational efforts of successful interventions are reported. Still less of these interventions have been implemented into routine services. The aim of the ReDiCare study (German acronym BerTA) is to evaluate the effectiveness of a stepped counselling approach for burdened caregivers delivered by care counsel

Seeing the positive in the face of adversity: neurocognitive markers of risk and resilience in emotional conflict processing in children with maltreatment exposure.

Identifying cognitive-emotional mechanisms that distinguish risk from resilience for developing internalizing disorders after childhood maltreatment is essential for detecting early vulnerability and informing targeted interventions. We examined whether affective control and attentional biases contribute to internalizing symptoms versus resilience in children with maltreatment exposure during middle childhood. We recruited N = 208 children, aged 6-12 years, including N = 84 with maltreatment exposure from child welfare offices and clinics and N = 124 children without maltreatment exposure. An

Health-related hardiness and influencing factors among cervical cancer radiotherapy patients: A cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Health-Related Hardiness (HRH) is a key psychological resource for adaptive recovery in cancer patients, but evidence remains limited among cervical cancer (CC) patients undergoing radiotherapy. Based on the hardiness model, this study assesses HRH levels in this population and examines its associations with coping styles, perceived social support, and health literacy, aiming to identify key influencing factors and inform targeted psychological support. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 230 eligible CC patients via convenience sampling from the radiotherapy department of a

Qualitative insights into nurses' emotional and functional experiences in the 2023 military humanitarian mission to Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Humanitarian aid delegations play a crucial role in assisting victims of disasters worldwide. Nursing and medical teams are involved in treating injuries and illnesses, promoting health, and providing emotional support to patients. Such teams often have long-term emotional, social, and functional impacts. Those impacts can include post-traumatic stress disorder, disrupted social relationships, and decreased professional efficacy. This paper examines the emotional, social, and professional experiences of nurses participating in the Israeli Defence Forces’ (IDF) 2023 humanitarian ope

Illness Experiences in Young and Middle-Aged Patients With Dilated Cardiomyopathy on Chinese Social Media: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), characterized by ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction, has a 10-year survival rate of 25%. The number of young and middle-aged patients with DCM is increasing, with progressive physical limitations and psychosocial distress substantially impairing quality of life. However, illness experiences in this population remain underexplored, particularly in non-Western contexts. Social media platforms such as Zhihu and Weibo offer a novel avenue for exploring patient narratives and peer support. OBJECTIVE: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted

Examining the associations between social support and postpartum depression symptoms among adolescent mothers in Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Globally, adolescent mothers are at increased risk for postpartum depression (PPD). In Kenya, 15% of adolescent girls become mothers before the age of 18. While social support can buffer a mother's risk of PPD, there are gaps in knowledge as to whether-and which types-of social support are protective for adolescent mothers in Kenya. Understanding the associations between support and postpartum depression symptoms among adolescent mothers can inform mental health interventions. METHODS: Cross-sectional data of adolescent mothers ≤ 1 year postpartum (aged 14-19 years old) in an info

Self-esteem instability in major depressive disorder: a computational analysis of expectation updating in response to performance feedback.

INTRODUCTION: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is consistently associated with low self-esteem; however, how self-evaluative beliefs are updated in response to environmental feedback in MDD remains poorly understood. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that low self-esteem in MDD reflects dynamic instability driven by altered processing of social-evaluative information, rather than a simple static deficit. METHODS: The study enrolled 60 patients with MDD and 30 healthy control participants. All participants completed a Social Comparison-Based Performance Task in which experimentally manipu

Drug misuse, tobacco smoking, alcohol and other social determinants of tuberculosis in UK-born adults in England: a community-based case-control study.

Addressing social determinants of tuberculosis (TB) is essential to achieve elimination, including in low-incidence settings. We measured the association between socio-economic status and intermediate social determinants of health (SDHs, including drug misuse, tobacco smoking and alcohol), and TB, taking into account their clustering in individuals. We conducted a case-control study in 23-38 years old UK-born White adults with first tuberculosis episode, and randomly selected age and sex frequency-matched community controls. Data was collected on education, household overcrowding, tobacco smok

Disrupted Modular Integration of the Reward System Is Associated With Social Deficits in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with atypical social communication as a core symptom. Variations in social information processing in individuals with ASD are associated with the social brain, which encompasses four specific subnetworks, that is, reward system, theory of mind network, mirror neuron system, and face perception network. However, the relationship between neural mechanisms of altered social functioning and modular integration of these subnetworks within the social brain remains unclear in ASD. With resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data

[Argentinian women and the uses of drugs: A sociohistorical analysis of female drug use in Argentina (1860-1930)].

This article describes cases presented by experts from the legislative and medical-legal fields regarding the use of psychoactive substances among Argentinian women from 1878 to 1930. Background information is presented regarding the relationship between women and the use different drugs, medical interventions on the female body where psychoactive substances were used are analyzed, and experts' descriptions of cases of female drug users are detailed. Experts' discourses during this period did not attempt to comprehend the specificities of female consumption, but were rather used to position th

Can the randomized controlled trial literature generalize to nonrandomized patients?

To determine the extent to which published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of psychotherapy can be generalized to a sample of outpatients, the authors matched information obtained from charts of patients who had been screened out of RCTs to inclusion and exclusion criteria from published RCT studies. Most of the patients in the sample who had primary diagnoses represented in the RCT literature were judged eligible for at least 1 RCT. However, many patients in the sample with substance use disorders or social anxiety disorder were not eligible for at least 2 RCTs. Common reasons that patien

Response decision processes and externalizing behavior problems in adolescents.

Externalizing behavior problems of 124 adolescents were assessed across Grades 7-11. In Grade 9, participants were also assessed across social-cognitive domains after imagining themselves as the object of provocations portrayed in six videotaped vignettes. Participants responded to vignette-based questions representing multiple processes of the response decision step of social information processing. Phase 1 of our investigation supported a two-factor model of the response evaluation process of response decision (response valuation and outcome expectancy). Phase 2 showed significant relations

Hippocampal and septal injections of nicotine and 8-OH-DPAT distinguish among different animal tests of anxiety.

1. Different animal tests model different anxiety disorders. Thus, the social interaction test is a model of generalised anxiety disorder, plus-maze Trial 1 models elements of panic disorder and Trial 2 in the elevated plus-maze is a model of specific phobia. 2. Studies of the neuroanatomical and neurochemical pathways controlling behaviour in these different tests provides information on the neurobiological mechanisms modulating anxiety disorders. 3. In the social interaction test, nicotine and 8-OH-DPAT had anxiogenic effects when injected into the dorsal hippocampus or the lateral septum. 4

AIM: To develop and test the effectiveness of an E-learning program for promoting physical activity (PA) and wellness among nurses. BACKGROUND: Restrictions during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic drastically changed many people's lives. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an everyday challenge faced by the general popula-tion. Nurses are one of the health care professionals who are typically well-educated in taking care of patients. There are studies that show that night shifts, extended shifts, and obesity have a correlation with the prevalence of acute low back pain among female nurses.

Local perceptions of cholera and anticipated vaccine acceptance in Katanga province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: In regions where access to clean water and the provision of a sanitary infrastructure has not been sustainable, cholera continues to pose an important public health burden. Although oral cholera vaccines (OCV) are effective means to complement classical cholera control efforts, still relatively little is known about their acceptability in targeted communities. Clarification of vaccine acceptability prior to the introduction of a new vaccine provides important information for future policy and planning. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study in Katanga province, Democratic Republic of

Vineland-II adaptive behavior profile of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or specific learning disorders.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of adaptive behavior is informative in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or specific learning disorders (SLD). However, the few investigations available have focused only on the gross level of domains of adaptive behavior. AIMS: To investigate which item subsets of the Vineland-II can discriminate children with ADHD or SLD from peers with typical development. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Student's t-tests, ROC analysis, logistic regression, and linear discriminant function analysis were used to compare 24 children with ADHD, 61 elementary stu

Experiences of living and dying with COPD: a systematic review and synthesis of the qualitative empirical literature.

UNLABELLED: In July 2010, the Medical Advisory Secretariat (MAS) began work on a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) evidentiary framework, an evidence-based review of the literature surrounding treatment strategies for patients with COPD. This project emerged from a request by the Health System Strategy Division of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care that MAS provide them with an evidentiary platform on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of COPD interventions. After an initial review of health technology assessments and systematic reviews of COPD literature, and consultat

Enhancing the cognitive, psychological, and social outcomes of adults undergoing surgery for focal drug-resistant epilepsy: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Achieving seizure control remains a primary objective of epilepsy surgery but other important patient-centred outcomes should not be overlooked. Despite the need for more holistic approaches supporting well-being over and above seizure control, scant empirical research has identified effective interventions aimed at improving adults' cognitive, psychological, and/or social outcomes following epilepsy surgery. This novel scoping review will be the first to map the evidence in this landscape. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The review will be conducted with reference to the Joanna Briggs In
