The neural representation of social status in the extended face-processing network.

Social status is a salient cue that shapes our perceptions of other people and ultimately guides our social interactions. Despite the pervasive influence of status on social behavior, how information about the status of others is represented in the brain remains unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that social status information is embedded in our neural representations of other individuals. Participants learned to associate faces with names, job titles that varied in associated status, and explicit markers of reputational status (star ratings). Trained stimuli were presented in an function

A network analysis of anxiety and depression symptoms in Chinese disabled elderly.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is an essential dimension of healthy aging. The number and severity of disabled elderly in China show an increasing tendency year by year. Due to their impaired ability of daily activities, reduced social participation and reduced self-care ability, they are more prone to depression and anxiety. METHOD: We included 2131 individuals aged 65 and older from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS 2017-2018). We used the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale-7 (GAD-7) to assess depr

Psychometric Properties of the Traditional Chinese Version of the Friendship Scale for Older Adults.

Cultural differences, along with various social and political determinants, affect the social isolation experienced by older adults. This study aimed to investigate the factor structure of the Traditional Chinese version of the Friendship Scale (FS-TC) and to assess its psychometric properties in relation to social isolation among Taiwanese older adults. In Phase 1, the scale underwent cultural adaptation and translation before being evaluated for face and content validity by ten older adults and five experts in nursing and geriatric care. Phase 2 involved a cross-sectional study with a conven

On the spurious effect of intergroup friendship on outgroup attitudes in schools: The role of social influence and the positive impact of exposure to outgroup peers.

Promoting intergroup friendships in schools is regarded as a powerful strategy for improving outgroup attitudes. However, stochastic actor-oriented modelling (SAOM) studies have often revealed no association between intergroup friendship and outgroup attitudes. I investigated whether SAOM studies reported no effect of intergroup friendship on outgroup attitudes, what was responsible for this surprising finding and whether exposure to outgroup peers was positively related to outgroup attitudes. The meta-analysis of SAOM studies confirms no association between intergroup friendship and outgroup

Resting-state functional connectivity in adults with 47,XXX: a 7 Tesla MRI study.

Triple X syndrome is a sex chromosomal aneuploidy characterized by the presence of a supernumerary X chromosome, resulting in a karyotype of 47,XXX in affected females. It has been associated with a variable cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric phenotype, but little is known about its effects on brain function. We therefore conducted 7 T resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and compared data of 19 adult individuals with 47,XXX and 21 age-matched healthy control women using independent component analysis and dual regression. Additionally, we examined potential relationships bet

Worry, avoidance, and coping during the COVID-19 pandemic: A comprehensive network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many psychological factors play a role in the COVID-19 pandemic, including various forms of worry, avoidance, and coping. Adding to the complexity, some people believe the threat of COVID-19 is exaggerated. We used network analysis to investigate how these diverse elements are interrelated. METHODS: A population-representative sample of 3075 American and Canadian adults completed an online survey, including measures of COVID-19-related worry, avoidance, self-protective behaviors, and other variables. RESULTS: The network contained three major hubs, replicated across gender and ag

Potential and limitations of socially assistive robots to support malnutrition care: a critical reflection by dietitians.

Nutrition is essential for the physical and psychological well-being and health of older adults. Malnutrition negatively affects both their physical and mental health and their overall quality of life. Dietitians face challenges in supporting older adults due to time constraints, which can limit the continuity of care. While previous research highlights the potential of assistive technologies to help reduce malnutrition, such as socially assistive robots (SARs), these approaches lack a holistic perspective and insufficiently address collaborative processes within the broader care network. This

Multilevel factors influencing HIV care and management in the Deep South: insights from HIV care professionals.

The United States Deep South bears a disproportionate HIV burden, with low rates of retention in care and viral suppression among people living with HIV (PWH). Factors influencing HIV care engagement can be understood through the modified social ecological model (MSEM), which comprises five interconnected layers: individual, network, community, policy, and HIV epidemic stage. We interviewed thirty HIV care professionals from Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana to identify optimal, culturally relevant approaches for engaging PWH in care. Using MSEM for qualitative analysis, we identified salien

Examining multimorbidity differences across racial groups: a network analysis of electronic medical records.

Health disparities across ethnic or racial groups are typically examined through single behavior at a time. The syndemics and multimorbidity health disparities have not been well examined by race. In this study, we study health disparities by identifying the networks of multimorbidities among individuals from seven population groups based on race, including White, African American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, Bi- or Multi-racial and Pacific Islander. We examined a large electronic medical record (EMR) containing health records of more than 18.7 million patients and created multimorbidity

Increased Functional Connectivity Between Subcortical and Cortical Resting-State Networks in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit severe difficulties in social interaction, motor coordination, behavioral flexibility, and atypical sensory processing, with considerable interindividual variability. This heterogeneous set of symptoms recently led to investigating the presence of abnormalities in the interaction across large-scale brain networks. To date, studies have focused either on constrained sets of brain regions or whole-brain analysis, rather than focusing on the interaction between brain networks. OBJECTIVES: To compare the intrinsic functional conn

Social anxiety and alcohol use across the university years: Adaptive and maladaptive groups.

University/college can be a challenging time as students face developmental tasks such as building new social networks and achieving academically. Social anxiety may be disadvantageous in this setting given that social situations often include drinking and individuals with social anxiety tend to self-medicate through alcohol use. However, findings are mixed as to whether the association between social anxiety and alcohol use is positive or negative. To clarify the nature of this association, we used a person-centered longitudinal analysis to identify student groups based on levels of social an

Transcriptome Profiling and Expression Localization of Key Sex-Related Genes in a Socially-Controlled Hermaphroditic Clownfish, Amphiprion clarkii.

Clownfish can be an excellent research model for investigating the socially-controlled sexual development of sequential hermaphrodite teleosts. However, the molecular cascades underlying the social cues that orchestrate the sexual development process remain poorly understood. Here, we performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis of gonads from females, males, and nonbreeders of Amphiprion clarkii, which constitute a complete social group, allowing us to investigate the molecular regulatory network under social control. Our analysis highlighted that the gonads of nonbreeders and males exhibi

Non-invasive brain stimulation of cerebellar and cortical targets: A systematic review and ALE meta-analysis of cognitive and connectivity outcomes in adults.

BACKGROUND: Beyond motor control, the cerebellum contributes to cognition, emotion, and social functioning through distributed cerebro-cerebellar loops. Neuroimaging and lesion studies implicate these networks in executive control, affect regulation, and social cognition, with relevance for psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a systematic review and ALE meta-analysis to determine whether non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) applied to cortical or cerebellar targets modulates task-related brain activity and cerebro-cerebellar connectivity, and whether such
