Psychological morbidity in women referred for treatment of hirsutism.

Sixty-nine pre-menopausal hirsute women were studied to determine the prevalence of psychological morbidity, and to identify factors associated with psychiatric symptoms. Measures used included: GHQ and POMS to assess psychological morbidity; self-esteem; personality (EPQ); and social adjustment, amongst other. About a third of subjects were found to be GHQ cases, one third had never discussed their hirsutism before, and two thirds avoided some social situations. Psychological morbidity was associated with poor social adjustment, higher levels of neuroticism and introversion, and avoidance of

Longitudinal change and association between four types of social support and mental health among low-income U.S. veterans.

AIMS: This study sought to examine how perceived social support changes over time for U.S. veterans and how social support relates to their mental health longitudinally. METHODS: Data from a nationally representative sample of 783 low-income U.S. veterans in 2021-2023 were analyzed to examine changes and correlates of four different types of social support (Emotional/Informational Support, Tangible Support, Affectionate Support and Positive Social Interaction) over 1 year. Weighted logistic mixed models were conducted. RESULTS: The majority of veterans reported no change in their level of pe

Predictors of HIV Disclosure in Infected Persons Presenting to Establish Care.

Persons receiving effective HIV treatment experience longevity and improvement in quality of life. For those infected, social support is associated with improved medication adherence. Disclosure of infection status is likely a prerequisite for social support. However, little research describes patterns of HIV disclosure by infected persons. We retrospectively evaluated factors associated with disclosure among patients initiating HIV care at a university-based clinic from 2007 to 2012. Of 490 persons initiating care, 13 % had not disclosed their HIV infection to anyone. Black race significantly

Changes in psychosocial distress in outpatients with heart failure with implantable cardioverter defibrillators.

Patients given implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) after arrhythmic events or sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) experience psychosocial distress. ICDs now are inserted for the primary prevention of SCA in patients with heart failure; the psychosocial impact of ICDs on patients with heart failure is unknown. Changes in psychosocial status in these ICD recipients were examined. ICD recipients (n = 57) completed depression, anxiety, and social support inventories every 6 months for up to 2 years. Initially, 35% of recipients were depressed and 45% of recipients were anxious. In linear mixed …

Role of social support and self-efficacy in treatment outcomes among clients with co-occurring disorders.

Individuals with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders have a more severe clinical course and poorer outcomes than do individuals with one disorder. In an attempt to find intervening variables that may contribute to improvement in treatment outcomes among individuals with co-occurring disorders, we investigated the roles of social support and self-efficacy in a sample of 351 clients with co-occurring disorders in residential drug abuse treatment programs (53% male; 35% African American, 13% Hispanic). Given their demographic variability, we also explored how ethnicity and age in

Educational attainment and social isolation trajectories from midlife to later life in four high- and middle-income countries.

Social isolation is an important public health concern, yet its variation by educational attainment across life stages and sociocultural contexts is not well understood. This study uses harmonized longitudinal data from the Gateway to Global Aging Data (2010 to 2018) to examine trajectories of social isolation from midlife to later life in the United States, England, China, and Mexico. We analyze both an overall isolation index and four dimensions of isolation: partnership status, contact with children, contact with friends, and social participation. Growth curve models assess differences in s

Comparing Neighbors and Friends in Age-Related Network Changes.

OBJECTIVES: To assess how the role of neighbors and friends in people's networks changes with age and how this is affected by cohort, marriage, employment, and socioeconomic status. The hypothesis is that for most aspects of the network, friends lose "importance" as people become older, with neighbors gradually becoming more dominant in the nonkin network. METHODS: Data are used for people aged 55-90 between 1999 and 2019 from the Swiss Household Panel (N = 5,585). A total of 4 network aspects were measured: size, contact, practical support, and emotional support. Measures for neighbors and f

Longitudinal Patterns in Parent and Friend Emotion Socialization: Associations With Adolescent Emotion Regulation.

Adolescents learn about emotions through interacting with parents and friends, though there is limited longitudinal research on this topic. This study examined longitudinal patterns in parent and friend emotion socialization and adolescent emotion regulation. Eighty-seven adolescents reported on parent and friend emotion socialization. Parents reported on adolescent emotion regulation. Parents' responses were stable over time and across gender. Friends of girls reciprocated negative emotions more and were less punitive over time, whereas friends of boys increased in comforting and decreased in

Impact of social relationships on income-laughter relationships among older people: the JAGES cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Laughter has a positive and quantifiable effect on certain aspects of health, and previous studies have suggested that income influences the emotion. However, it is unknown whether social relationship-related factors modify the association between equivalised income and laughter among older people. In the present study, we examined the relationship between equivalised income and the frequency of laughter. In addition, we examined the impact of social relationship-related factors on the association between equivalised income and frequency of laughter using a cross-sectional study de

A Qualitative Study of a Maintenance Support Program for Women at Risk of Homelessness: Part 1: Personal Factors.

In this article, a qualitative study of homeless women and their experiences attending a Maintenance Support Programme (MSP) is discussed. The overarching theme that emerged from the study of women in the MSP was 'A life-changing event: I have the power to change'. The article focuses on the first of the sub-themes: personal factors including: (a) health status, (b) beliefs and attitudes, (c) knowledge, and (d) life and interpersonal skills. Findings demonstrate the influence that these factors have on the capacity of homeless women to change their lives. The MSP was instrumental in supporting

Academic and Social Functioning Associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Latent Class Analyses of Trajectories from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are known to exhibit significantly lower academic and social functioning than other children. Yet the field currently lacks knowledge about specific impairment trajectories experienced by children with ADHD, which may constrain early screening and intervention effectiveness. Data were analyzed from a nationally representative U.S. cohort in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K) for 590 children (72.7 % male) whose parents reported a formal diagnosis of ADHD. Children's math, reading, and in

Effects of Living Alone on Social Capital and Health Among Older Adults in China.

Social capital has been connected with positive health outcomes across countries, including China. Given the rise in the number of seniors living alone, there is a need to examine the health benefits of social capital, accounting for living arrangements. Data from the 2005 Chinese General Social Survey were used to test research hypotheses. Controlling for demographics, elders living alone possessed similar level of social capital compared with elders living with others. While bonding and linking social capital were significant factors in urban areas and linking social capital was a significan

The Social Patterning of Tobacco Use Among Women in Jordan: The Protective Effect of Education on Cigarette Smoking and the Deleterious Effect of Wealth on Cigarette and Waterpipe Smoking.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of social inequalities in tobacco-use has been fully recognized in the international literature. Even though cigarette and waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) are prevalent in the Arab region, the literature has not addressed the social determinants of the impending tobacco epidemic. This study examined the socioeconomic patterning of cigarette and WTS among Jordanian women. METHODS: We analyzed pooled data from four waves of the Jordan Demographic and Health Surveys: 2002 (N = 5851); 2007 (N = 10 654); 2009 (N = 9879), and 2012 (N = 11 113). We specified logistic regre

Social anxiety as a basis for friendship selection and socialization in adolescents' social networks.

Socially anxious children and adolescents have previously been found to have friends with similarly socially anxious, withdrawn behavioral characteristics. How peers might socialize social anxiety over time has, however, not been thoroughly investigated. We examined this in a sample of 834 youths (339 girls and 495 boys; M=14.29), followed for 3 years. We used the social network analysis software SIENA to analyze the data. The results showed that youths who were socially anxious were less popular and chose fewer friends in the network. They also tended to choose friends who were socially anxio

U.S. marital disruptions and their economic and social correlates, 1860-1948.

A new estimate of U.S. marital disruptions shows an increase in desertions relative to divorces after 1900. Desertions were the more volatile component of marital disruptions because of their greater responsiveness to general economic conditions. Large marriage cohorts, formed in the years of economic expansion, disrupted in greater numbers: an increase in the marriage rate by 10 per 1,000 unmarried women raised the proportion of disrupted marriage by 7.3 percentage points. Conversely, during years of recession, many poorer couples were discouraged from marriage; smaller marriage cohorts with
