The computed tomography (CT) findings of five benign, mature teratomas of the anterior mediastinum collected during a ten-year period are described, and their case histories are reviewed. Three of the five were primarily cystic, with only small soft tissue components. One of the five contained equal cystic and solid elements. All cysts had a higher attenuation than water. Three tumors contained small foci of dense calcification or ossification. Only two contained fat. Computed tomography accurately predicted the presence of adherence to adjacent structures in all five. Four of five patients we

Pelvic lipomatosis is a non-malignant condition of unknown etiology characterized by an overgrowth of non-encapsulated fatty tissue in the perirectal and perivesical spaces of the pelvis. The symptoms are generally vague and the condition is often diagnosed accidentally. It may cause obstruction of the ureters, inferior vena cava and pelvic veins and may be associated with cystitis glandularis. The typical conventional radiographic findings, though not pathognomonic, are a high-positioned and pear-shaped bladder, tubular narrowing of the rectum and distal sigmoid colon and reduced attenuation

The diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma was made prospectively and noninvasively in four patients with the use of sonography, computed tomography, and sonographically guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy. The imaging methods revealed information similar to the operative findings, with clear superiority of computed tomography over sonography. These noninvasive methods may be used as screening tools, especially among groups or in regional areas with a high risk for asbestos exposure. The findings included soft-tissue masses with invariable involvement of the omentum; small intraperitoneal nodul

BACKGROUND: Venous gas embolus secondary to deep soft tissue infection is a rare but potentially fatal condition in emergency settings that requires urgent medical intervention.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 32-year-old female with an invasive mole undergoing chemotherapy who presented with fever and severe bilateral lower limb pain. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) revealed gas emboli on B-mode and Doppler-mode imaging within the femoral veins and further detected emphysematous changes in adjacent intramuscular and subcutaneous tissues, suggesting critical infection and initiating

Ultrasound-matter interactions underpin numerous biomedical and soft-matter applications, yet simulating these phenomena is challenging due to the large separation of viscous and sonic time scales. Continuum methods capture large-scale wave propagation but cannot resolve microscale interactions, while particle-based approaches offer molecular resolution but struggle with efficiency and stability at larger scales. We introduce a particle-based virtual ultrasound machine that uses a smoothed dissipative particle dynamics variant with an implicit pressure solver and a negative-pressure stabilizat

Leiomyosarcoma is a subtype of soft-tissue sarcoma, which is a rare soft-tissue malignancy comprising < 1% of adult cancers. There are a variety of etiologies of small bowel obstruction. Infrequently, small bowel malignancies can first present as small bowel obstruction. In exceedingly rare cases, leiomyosarcomas can be the offending malignancy. A 53-year-old male presented to the emergency department with several weeks of persistent right abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Computed tomography scan revealed a central necrotic mass within the right lower quadrant originating from the small b

This article explores the potential of photon-counting computed tomography (CT) in forensic medicine for a range of forensic applications. Photon-counting CT surpasses conventional CT in several key areas. It boasts superior spatial and contrast resolution, enhanced image quality at low x-ray energies, and spectral imaging capabilities that enable more precise material differentiation. These advantages translate to superior visualization of bone structures, foreign bodies, and soft tissues in postmortem examinations. The article discusses the technical principles of photon-counting CT detector

With the use of cone beam computed tomography, intraoral scanning and 3D stereophotogrammetry, a virtual 3D head model of a patient can be reconstructed with image fusion. In this way, the malposition, deficiency and other anomalies at the level of bone, dentition and soft tissue can be quantified objectively. The desired position of the dentition, occlusion and soft tissue in the facial profile can be virtually drawn in and used as a guideline for treatment planning. Based on the principle of backward planning, it is possible to determine what repositioning of the jaw is required, where there

Hamartomas, as non-true tumors, are commonly found in the lungs, digestive tract, and kidneys, and there are few clinical reports on nasal cases. Nasal histiocytosis accompanied by lymphatic lesions is a common feature of nasal hamartoma. Three patients with nasal cavity hamartoma were treated in our department, including 1 male and 2 females, with nasal obstruction or epistaxis. The imaging (computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging) of 2 patients showed a soft tissue mass in the nasal cavity and no erosion of bone, while in 1 patient, the imaging was inconclusive. The excised material

Diffuse pulmonary lymphangiomatosis (DPL) is rare in adults. It is characterized by abnormal proliferation, dilatation, and thickening of the lymphatic channels in the lungs, pleura, and mediastinal soft tissue. Here, we report a case of DPL in a young adult man with recurrent productive cough. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed bilateral interlobular septal and peribronchovascular thickening and mediastinal soft tissue infiltration. Lung biopsy through video-assisted thoracic surgery demonstrated proliferation and dilatation of irregular lymphatic spaces, lined by flattened endothelial cel

Interpretation of the morphology and characteristics of soft tissues, such as paravertebral muscles and fat, has always been a "relative blind spot" in the spine. The imaging features of the non-bony structures of the spine have been studied and reinterpreted, and changes in the non-bony structure are associated with spinal disease. Soft tissue parameters such as, the "paraspinal muscle cross-sectional area," "subcutaneous fat thickness," and the "paraspinal muscle fat infiltration rate" on computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and other imaging techniques are reproducible in the dia

Liposarcoma is one of the common soft tissue tumors but barely arises from the mediastinum. Complete surgical resection with a negative surgical margin is required for the treatment; however, mediastinal liposarcomas tend to be large due to its slow-growing nature. A 57-year-old man was referred to us for having an abnormal mediastinal shadow in a chest X-ray. Computed tomography scanning revealed a giant posterior mediastinal tumor, completely involving the esophagus. Because of the unusual size and location of the tumor, we took a bilateral video-assisted thoracoscopic approach. First, the s

A 35-year-old male patient reported with the chief complaint of a large swelling in the right side of the upper lip. The lesion measured 6.5 cm measuring from the infraorbital region to the lower border of mandible on the right side of the face and 7.5 cm from the right ear lobule to the contralateral commissure of the left side of the face. On palpation, the swelling was soft, fluctuant and compressible. Pulsations were felt, and on auscultation, bruit was also heard. Computed tomography angiogram of the neck and circle of Willis showed serpiginous hyperdense vascular channels causing signifi

Intra-articular primary soft tissue sarcomas are extremely rare. The present case report describes a case of intra-articular synovial sarcoma of the ankle joint. A 51-year-old man presented with complaints of swelling and progressive pain in the right ankle. Lateral radiographs of the ankle revealed lytic invasion of the anterior and posterior parts of the talus. Computed tomography imaging revealed a low-density lesion with calcifications around the ankle joint. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the diffuse lesion was isointense on T1-weighted images and hypointense to hyperintense on

Pedal infection is a difficult diagnostic problem for clinicians and radiologists alike, especially in patients with diabetes. Vascular and neuropathic disease complicates the clinical picture and imaging appearance. Radiographs are usually the first examination ordered, offering an excellent overview of previous surgery, structural deformities, and neuropathic joint disease. Ultrasound and computed tomography are occasionally useful to answer specific questions. Scintigraphy has become less popular because MRI provides high sensitivity and specificity as well as detailed anatomical informatio

This case report describes an 11 yr old spayed female German shepherd dog weighing 42 kg that presented with intermittent epistaxis from the left nostril. A nonulcerated pale irregular polypoid mass was visualized within the left nares. Computed tomography revealed a pedunculated mass arising from the ventrolateral nasal mucosal of the left nasal cavity with no evidence of involvement or invasion of adjacent soft tissues or bony structures. Histological and immunohistochemical examination of rhinoscopic biopsies returned a diagnosis of an angioleiomyosarcoma. The mass was excised using a modif

Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a benign inflammatory hyperplastic lesion of unknown etiology that occurs in the gingiva or alveolar ridge. It normally manifests as a soft tissue nodule, purplish-red in color, consisting of multinucleated giant cells in a background of mononuclear stromal cells and extravasated red blood cells. This article presents a case of a 75-year-old man whose chief complaint was painless swelling in the posterior mandibular region. Intraoral examination revealed a swelling that was red, firm, and sessile, with a smooth surface texture. An orthopantomogram reve

Gardner's syndrome (GS) is an autosomal dominant form of polyposis characterized by the presence of multiple polyps in the colon together with osseous tumors and soft-tissue tumors, such as epidermoid cysts and lipomas. An osteoma is a benign, osteogenic tumor and may be sporadic or related to GS. Here, we present a patient with a giant sino-orbital osteoma and blepharoptosis as the only symptom of incomplete GS. A 74-year-old woman, with no previous history of trauma or ophthalmic surgery, presented with a 2 years history of right blepharoptosis without diplopia. The results of slit-lamp and

UNLABELLED: Traumatic instability of the elbow is a common problem among patients presenting to emergency departments. As recurrent instability is more common than previously thought and the knowledge of the most frequent underlying causes increases, treatment of elbow instability is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Therefore, it is mandatory for the radiologist to be familiar with the important osseous and soft-tissue stabilisers of the elbow joint and to know the pathomechanisms that lead to a spectrum of joint instability. This article discusses the relevant anatomy in elbow stability w
