Lifecycle dynamics of mercury sulfide nanoparticles in a soil-rice system.

Current understanding of mercury sulfide nanoparticles (HgS NPs) fails to adequately capture their long-term effects in soil-rice systems, particularly the dynamic interplay between NPs, rice plants, and soil microbes under field-relevant conditions. In this study, single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) delineated a soil-to-grain mercury pathway mediated by HgS NPs at environmentally realistic concentrations (108-109 NPs g-1). Across the 111-day rice growth cycle, HgS NPs functioned as both vectors for plant uptake and key precursors for methylmercury (MeHg) fo…

Soil organic matter decomposition as a key driver of pharmaceutical retention.

Human activities release Pharmaceutically Active Compounds (PhACs) onto arable land, where they can accumulate and disrupt the ecological balance. The soil's microbial community continuously alters the composition of organic matter, as it serves as their primary nutrient source. The quality and quantity of organic matter may vary even within a single vegetation period. Observing the extent of transformation in the different phases is essential, as organic matter is primarily responsible for the soil's ability to retain micropollutants. An incubated sorption experiment was conducted simulating …

The link between antibiotic resistance level and soil physico-chemical properties.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health concern. While AMR research has primarily focused on medical and veterinary settings, the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through natural environments, including soil, remains poorly understood. This study investigates the relationship between soil physico-chemical properties and ARG abundance in environments with varying levels of anthropogenic impact. Soil samples were collected from agricultural fields after harvest (both manured and non-manured, but fertilized with mineral fertil…

Sheep and rapeseed cake manure promote antibiotic resistome in agricultural soil.

The application of manure in agriculture caused the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in soil environments. However, the co-occurrence pattern and host diversity of ARGs and MGEs in soils amended with animal and green manures remains unclear. In this study, metagenomic assembly and binning techniques were employed to comprehensively explore the effects of sheep manure and green manure on soil microbiome, antibiotic resistomes, and ARG hosts. Both rapeseed cake manure and sheep manure increased the abundance and diversity of ARGs,…

Profiling of soil bio-composite pollution and driving factors in China.

Soil biological contamination driven by antibiotic resistance poses escalating global health threats, yet national-scale assessments remain scarce. To bridge this knowledge gap, metagenomic analysis of 300 samples spanning five ecosystems (agricultural, bare land, forest, grassland, wetland) was employed to study the diversity, co-occurrence patterns, and driving factors of the soil resistome and pathogens across China. Our analyses revealed that antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were ubiquitously detected (23 types; 0.03-2.6 copies/cell), with multidrug (mexF, mexW), vancomycin (vanR/S), and…

Quantification of soil inorganic carbon using sulfamic acid and gas chromatography.

Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas emitted through human activities, and these emissions impact the carbon cycle for hundreds to thousands of years. As carbon dioxide removal strategies to address this challenge continue to be explored and scaled, faster methodologies with high accuracy and precision are required to support the carbon measurements on which these strategies hinge. Of the many available methods to measure soil inorganic carbon, only a select few satisfy all the following criteria: measure inorganic carbon directly, use standardized equipment, perform the measurement au…

A meta-analysis of afforestation impacts on soil greenhouse gas emissions.

Afforestation is a natural climate solution and a key strategy to mitigate climate change. While tree planting primarily achieves this mitigation via above-ground carbon sequestration, soils also play a dual role as sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHG). Understanding afforestation impacts on soil GHG flux is essential for leveraging afforestation to combat global warming. In this research, we conducted a global meta-analysis of 157 studies to assess the effects of afforestation on soil GHG emissions across different prior land uses and to identify key emission drivers. Our results indic…

From Soil to Table: A Comprehensive Review of Selenium-Fortified Foods.

Selenium, an essential trace element with a narrow nutritional window, plays critical roles in human health primarily through selenoproteins. Its dual nature, being vital yet potentially toxic, underscores the importance of precise intake. Geographical disparities in soil Se content lead to widespread dietary deficiencies, driving the advancement of Se-fortified foods. Food selenium fortification strategies are implemented through modern techniques, including selenium application to soil or foliage, crop genetic engineering, microorganism-mediated transformation, and direct supplementation of …

Pharmaceuticals in soil and groundwater: Analytical methods, sources, and mitigation techniques.

Pharmaceuticals have long been used to treat diseases in humans and animals and to control pests of plants/crops. However, with the identification of these contaminants in the environment, it is of major concern. While they have been documented either in soil or groundwater as separate entities, there are limited investigations on their sources. Also, identification methods and mitigation techniques of these contaminants in soils and groundwater are not well understood. Herein, studies on soil and groundwater pharmaceuticals from 2011 to 2025 were selected from PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, …

Construction and application of soil-amending microbial inoculant for straw decomposition.

The current body of research on using composite microbial inoculants in soil to promote straw decomposition, potassium solubility, phosphorus solubility, and crop growth is relatively limited. In this study, we developed a composite microbial inoculant, designated HC-2, through the enrichment of the field with two strains of Bacillus. The agent displays multifunctionality and promotes rot prevention, solubilization of potassium and phosphorus, growth stimulation, and disease suppression. To further investigate its effects on soil fertility and microbial communities, field experiments were cond…

Pseudomonas aeruginosa community-acquired pneumonia following soil ingestion: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is an uncommon etiological agent in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), typically associated with nosocomial or healthcare-associated infections, particularly in patients with underlying structural lung abnormalities or immunosuppression. P. aeruginosa is a ubiquitous gram-negative rod, widely distributed in the environment. However, CAP due to P. aeruginosa following soil ingestion is exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a previously healthy 31-year-old patient, a middle school teacher, who developed CAP due to P. aeru…

Prescribed biomass burning effects on soil NO emissions in South Carolina.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) are key atmospheric trace gases that affect air quality, oxidation chemistry, and nitrogen deposition. Although anthropogenic NOx emissions have declined due to regulations, natural sources like soil emissions are becoming relatively more important. Biomass burning can alter soil nitrogen cycling and potentially influence soil NO fluxes, yet few controlled studies exist. Here, we examined how prescribed burning affects soil NO emissions in a South Carolina forest using incubation experiments. The study site is a sandhill ecosystem dominated by upland oak and lo…

Migration characteristics of ARGs from pig manure in compost - soil - lettuce.

This study aims to reveal the contamination patterns, persistence characteristics, and fate dynamics of ARGs during aerobic composting of swine manure with different carbon-nitrogen ratios (C/N = 15:1, 25:1, 35:1) and their subsequent dissemination in soil-plant systems following fertilization. The absolute abundances of 101 ARGs of six categories ranged from 105 to 1014 copies/g during the composting process. The tetracyclines, macrolides and β-lactams ARGs were effectively reduced by the maturation phase. Among them, the β-lactam ARGs had the highest abatement efficiency (73-89 %). Quinolone…

Allolobophora caliginosa as bioindicator for chitosan-saponin-bentonite nanocomposite contaminated soil.

The usage of nanocomposites in water treatment has risen, resulting in their leaking into the soil, which is a major environmental concern. Earthworm (Allolobophora caliginosa) is used as a bioindicator that can accumulate most pollutants, even if they are present in low concentrations. The present study aimed to use earthworms as biological indicator for chitosan-saponin-bentonite nanocomposite (CSB NCs) in the soil. Earthworms were exposed to CSB NCs (0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 mg/500 g soil) for 7 consecutive days. CSB NCs induced significant damage and instability of the lysosomal membr…

Complex resistivity dispersion for monitoring soil contaminated by selected organic pollutants.

With the rapid development of the global petrochemical industry and the widespread use of organic solvents, the problem of non-aqueous phase pollution of soil is becoming increasingly serious. Due to the significant differences in complex resistivity among various pollutants, studying the complex resistivity dispersion characteristics of different pollution types and degrees can help evaluate contaminated sites and is highly significant for pollution control. In this study, soil samples with different concentrations of trichloroethylene, xylene and gasoline were prepared, the complex resistivi…

Characterization of Springtail (Arrhopalites caecus) for Use in Soil Ecotoxicity Testing.

Springtails (subclass: Collembola) represent one of the most extensively studied invertebrate groups in soil ecotoxicology. This is because of their ease of laboratory culture, significant ecological role, and sensitivity to environmental contaminants. Folsomia candida (family: Isotomidae) is a globally widespread parthenogenetic species that is prevalent in laboratory toxicity testing with springtails. Conversely, Arrhopalites caecus (family: Arrhopalitidae), a parthenogenic globular springtail species, remains untested in soil ecotoxicology. This species is found in diverse habitats, includi…

Microplastic diversity increases the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in soil.

The impact of microplastics on antibiotic resistance has attracted widespread attention. However, previous studies primarily focused on the effects of individual microplastics. In reality, diverse microplastic types accumulate in soil, and it remains less well studied whether microplastic diversity (i.e., variations in color, shape or polymer type) can be an important driver of increased antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) abundance. Here, we employed microcosm studies to investigate the effects of microplastic diversity on soil ARG dynamics through metagenomic analysis. Additionally, we evaluate…

Ruminating on soil carbon: Applying current understanding to inform grazing management.

Among options for atmospheric CO2 removal, sequestering soil organic carbon (SOC) via improved grazing management is a rare opportunity because it is scalable across millions of globally grazed acres, low cost, and has high technical potential. Decades of scientific research on grazing and SOC has failed to form a cohesive understanding of how grazing management affects SOC stocks and their distribution between particulate (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM)-characterized by different formation and stabilization pathways-across different climatic contexts. As we increasingly loo…

Eliminating explanations for Maladera formosae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) preponderance in sandy soil.

Most field corn in the United States receives a neonicotinoid seed treatment for the management of early-season, soil-dwelling insect pests. Grubs of Maladera formosae (Brenske) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) have been reported feeding on young field corn with both low and high rates of clothianidin seed treatments in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Anecdotally, these infestations are restricted to sandy soils in the region. The purpose of this study was to (1) evaluate whether grub populations in corn are restricted to sandy soils, (2) assess whether soil type influences M. formosae survival, and (3…
