Cyanide, a well-known toxic substance that could be used as a weapon of mass destruction, is likely responsible for a substantial percentage of smoke inhalation deaths. The vitamin B(12) precursor cobinamide binds cyanide with high affinity, changing color and, correspondingly, its spectrophotometric spectrum in the ultraviolet/visible light range. Based on these spectral changes, we developed a new facile method to measure cyanide in blood using cobinamide. We present novel measurements of the refractive index, density and integrated band strengths of mid-infrared features of solid N(2)O at 16K and of NO(2) and N(2)O(4) in two frozen NO(2):N(2)O(4) mixtures deposited at 16 and 60K. A simple and rapid test has been developed to quantitatively measure the migration of antimony (Sb) and germanium (Ge) from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products. The PET product was soaked in 4% acetic acid (2 mL/cm2) for 30 min at 60 degrees C and 95 degrees C. The test solution was analyzed by ICP-MS. Recoveries of spiked Sb (0.025 microg/mL) and Ge (0.05 microg/mL) were 101% and 100%, respectively, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.3% and 1.7%. The spectrophotometric and thermodynamic properties of different substituted methylnaphthalenes charge transfer (CT) complexes with tetracyanoethylene have been studied in carbon tetrachloride. The spectral characteristics of the CT bands have also been discussed in relation to the positions of methyl groups. The formation constants and the spectral properties of the complexes are markedly affected with the substitution position of the methyl groups. The ionization potentials of the donors are determined.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of the type of spectrophotometer and method used in the estimation of HbF.
DESIGN: Two sets of experiments were done. In the first set, paired blood samples were obtained from 28 adult sickle cell anaemia subjects. One of each pair of samples was analysed for HbF by Betke's method and the other by the elution method and the values obtained were compared. In the second set of experiments, ten other paired samples were analysed for HbF, one using an analogue spectrophotometer and the other using a digital spectrophotometer and the results compared.

Nickel salicylates complexes were synthesized with the rheologic phase reaction method. The composition of these complexes were confirmed by elemental analysis, TG and IR, the principal infrared absorption peaks were assigned for the region 4,000-400 cm-1. The IR spectra indicated that a hydroxyl group on Ni atom was occurred and so absorption peaks of hydroxyl group were shifted obviously to higher frequency in nickel monosalicylates.

A spectrophotometric technique was used to determine the acidity constants of 4-dedimethylamino sancycline (Col-3), a new antitumor drug. The apparent pKa values of Col-3 in 0.5% methanol aqueous media at approximately 25 degrees C with a constant ionic strength of 0.2 were calculated manually and graphically to be 5.64 +/- 0.17 (pKa1) and 8.35 +/- 0.07 (pKa2). In addition, the computer program SQUAD was used to confirm Col-3 pKa values. The pKa values obtained by SQUAD were pKa1 5.63 +/- 0.14 and pKa2 8.39 +/- 0.04. These results are in agreement with the tetracycline-like structure of Col-3.

The photochemical behavior of 5-S-cysteinyldopa (5-S-CD), a colorless product of melanocyte metabolism, was investigated in neutral phosphate buffer with biologically relevant UV radiation.
