PURPOSE: To determine the concentration of microelements in the blood of patients with a history of retrobulbar optic neuritis (ON).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 36 patients (18-63 years of age) - 11 with demyelinating ON (Group 1) and 25 with isolated ON (Group 2) - all of whom had been treated for retrobulbar ON. The control group comprised 38 healthy volunteers. Using atomic absorption spectroscopy, blood levels of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) were evaluated.

A novel nanocomposite of CdTe-PAMAM-MWNT was synthesized by covalently linking CdTe quantum dots (QDs) onto highly water-soluble multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) functionalized with dendritic poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM). The IR, UV-vis and TEM methods has been used for the characterization of the composites. A facile method for controlling the density of QDs in the composite by simply changing the ratio of CdTe QDs/PAMAM-MWNT, as was verified by the TEM images. This prospective case-control study included 78 women between 15 to 45 years of age from rural area to see changes in serum copper level as a consequence of oral contraceptive use. The oxidation state of intracellular chromium has been determined directly in mammalian lung cells exposed to mutagenic and carcinogenic chromium compounds. Microprobe X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments on single V79 Chinese hamster lung cells showed that Cr(VI) and Cr(V) complexes were reduced completely (>90%) to Cr(III) within 4 h of exposure of the cells. This result provides direct evidence for the hypothesis that these genotoxic oxidants react rapidly with intracellular reductants.
