Hemispheric asymmetry in auditory processing of speech envelope modulations in prereading children.

The temporal envelope of speech is an important cue contributing to speech intelligibility. Theories about the neural foundations of speech perception postulate that the left and right auditory cortices are functionally specialized in analyzing speech envelope information at different time scales: the right hemisphere is thought to be specialized in processing syllable rate modulations, whereas a bilateral or left hemispheric specialization is assumed for phoneme rate modulations. Recently, it has been found that this functional hemispheric asymmetry is different in individuals with language-r…

Results of vocal rehabilitation using tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis after total laryngectomy and their predictive factors.

The aims of this retrospective study were to evaluate prosthetic voice restoration by tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) in laryngectomized patients and to identify clinical factors correlated with functional outcomes. Between 2000 and 2008, 103 patients who underwent total laryngectomy or pharyngolaryngectomy (TPL) were included in our study. Functional outcomes were recorded 6 months postoperatively, and results were scored from 0 to 2 for oral diet and speech intelligibility. Lifetime of voice prosthesis and early and late complications were recorded. The impact of several clinical factors on…

The hypothesis of apraxia of speech in children with autism spectrum disorder.

In a sample of 46 children aged 4-7 years with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and intelligible speech, there was no statistical support for the hypothesis of concomitant Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Perceptual and acoustic measures of participants' speech, prosody, and voice were compared with data from 40 typically-developing children, 13 preschool children with Speech Delay, and 15 participants aged 5-49 years with CAS in neurogenetic disorders. Speech Delay and Speech Errors, respectively, were modestly and substantially more prevalent in participants with ASD than reported population

Speech recognition in recurrent otitis media: results in a set of identical twins.

Performance-intensity functions for Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Test (PSI) word and sentence materials presented in competition were obtained for a set of identical female twins, aged 4 years, 2 months. Twin B had a medical history significant for recurrent otitis media, while Twin A had only one reported occurrence of the disease. Twin A yielded normal functions for both word and sentence materials. Twin B, however, yielded an essentially normal function for sentences, but the function for monosyllabic words was grossly depressed. These findings support the hypothesis that transient cond…

Talker change detection by listeners varying in age and hearing loss.

Despite a vast literature on how speech intelligibility is affected by hearing loss and advanced age, remarkably little is known about the perception of talker-related information in these populations. Here, we assessed the ability of listeners to detect whether a change in talker occurred while listening to and identifying sentence-length sequences of words. Participants were recruited in four groups that differed in their age (younger/older) and hearing status (normal/impaired). The task was conducted in quiet or in a background of same-sex two-talker speech babble. We found that age and hea…

Neural Segregation of Concurrent Speech: Effects of Background Noise and Reverberation on Auditory Scene Analysis in the Ventral Cochlear Nucleus.

Concurrent complex sounds (e.g., two voices speaking at once) are perceptually disentangled into separate "auditory objects". This neural processing often occurs in the presence of acoustic-signal distortions from noise and reverberation (e.g., in a busy restaurant). A difference in periodicity between sounds is a strong segregation cue under quiet, anechoic conditions. However, noise and reverberation exert differential effects on speech intelligibility under "cocktail-party" listening conditions. Previous neurophysiological studies have concentrated on understanding auditory scene analysis u…

Post laryngectomy rehabilitation the case for planned early speech therapy.

This study reflects the efficacy of planned early speech therapy on post laryngectomy rehabilitation. Not only do a larger number of laryngectomees acquire intelligible esophageal speech where therapy is instituted early but also the pace of development and quality of the speech is far superior when compared to those laryngectomees in whom speech therapy was delayed. This paper unequivocally supports the institution of planned early speech therapy in the successful rehabilitation of the laryngectomee. Such therapy can proceed simultaneously with the post operative radiation therapy sans delete

Neural frequency-tagging of syllables in naturalistic speech is sensitive to background noise and age-related hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Healthy aging is often accompanied by a loss of hearing sensitivity and a reduced ability to understand speech in both quiet and noisy environments. From a physiological perspective, neural oscillations are thought to fundamentally contribute to parse the speech signal into meaningful units and to extract linguistically relevant information at multiple hierarchical levels. Given that syllables are essential structural elements of the speech signal that recur with quasi-rhythmic periodicity and are firmly anchored in slow amplitude modulations of the acoustic envelope, we exploite

Application of Wireless Contralateral Routing of Signal (CROS) Technology in Unilateral Cochlear Implant Users.

INTRODUCTION: Single cochlear implantation usually provides substantial speech intelligibility benefits but bilaterally deaf, unilaterally implanted subjects will continue to experience limitations due to the head shadow effect, like single-sided deaf individuals. In the treatment of individuals with single-sided deafness one option is contralateral routing of signal (CROS) devices, which constitute a non-surgical intervention of the second ear in unilaterally implanted individuals. METHOD: Twelve experienced adult cochlear implant users with Naída Q70 processor and the CROS device used in co…

Examining vocal attractiveness through articulatory working space.

Robust gender differences exist in the acoustic correlates of clearly articulated speech, with females, on average, producing speech that is acoustically and phonetically more distinct than that of males. This study investigates the relationship between several acoustic correlates of clear speech and subjective ratings of vocal attractiveness. Talkers were recorded producing vowels in /bVd/ context and sentences containing the four corner vowels. Multiple measures of working vowel space were computed from continuously sampled formant trajectories and were combined with measures of speech timin
