OBJECTIVE: This study aims to (1) determine the cut-off values of the Global Severity of vocal deviation on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) from the numerical scale ratings, and (2) identify the cut-off values according to different degrees of vocal deviation used by Voice-Specialized Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP).
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
METHODS: The auditory-perceptual assessment was performed by four SLPs using two protocols with different scales: the VAS and the 4-point numerical scale. Among the 211 voices analyzed, 147 corresponded to female participants, and 64 corresponde

Intimate partner violence (IPV) between parents is associated with poorer child language development. This study aimed to examine pathways from IPV and maternal depressive symptoms in children's 1st year to language skills at 10 years. Pathways were examined via IPV, maternal depressive symptoms, and maternal involvement in home learning activities (e.g., reading, storytelling) at age 4. A secondary aim was to examine whether these pathways differed by child gender. Data were drawn from 1,507 mothers and their firstborn children participating in a community-based prospective longitudinal study

Bilingualism, plurilingualism respectively multilingualism can be associated with pathological deviations. Besides hereditary components, it can be observed that exogenic influences such as cerebral injuries etc, may render more difficult multilingualism or even prevent multilingualism. It is the task of the phoniatry to recognize and to deal with this problem. For example, the following situations were explained in terms of recognition, symptoms, and treatment of the communicational disease via multilingualism from the point of phoniatrical-logopaedical view: delayed speech and language devel

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to analyze the effect of telephone transmission on the voice quality perception of subjects with dysphonia and seeks to contribute to the use of perceptual voice analysis in forensic context. The main hypothesis is that the auditory perception of voice quality differs according to the acoustic quality of the speech material.
STUDY DESIGN: Eight male speakers were simultaneously recorded directly by a digital recorder and over a mobile phone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A perceptual experiment containing 21 speech samples was used. The samples were analyzed v

This article examines the evolution in understanding of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) during the last four decades. A central theme is the recognition of heterogeneity. Originally construed as a disorder of behaviour and executive impairment, FTD is now known also to be associated with alterations in language, conceptual knowledge and praxis. An absence of neurological signs is the hallmark of many FTD patients, but there is also an established association with motor neurone disease (MND), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD). FTD is commonly defined as an e

BACKGROUND: There have been calls for speech and language therapists (SLTs) to work within a public-health framework to support language development. Innovative practice is reported, but the range of services remains unknown. Furthermore, the potential impact of public health practice in speech and language therapy on early child development is also currently unknown. A new method in SLT research, systematic scoping reviews enable greater breadth of focus than traditional systematic reviews when identifying innovative practice.
AIM: To report scope and critically appraise evidence of family-f

BACKGROUND: 'Speech sound disorder' is an umbrella term that encompasses dysarthria, articulation disorders, childhood apraxia of speech and phonological disorders. However, differential diagnosis between these disorders is a persistent challenge in speech pathology, as many diagnostic procedures use symptom clusters instead of identifying an origin of breakdown in the speech and language system.
AIMS: This article reviews typical and disordered speech through the lens of two well-developed models of production-one focused on phonological encoding and one focused on speech motor planning. We

Physiology education often faces challenges such as limited instructional time, complex content, and low student engagement, leading to high failure rates. This study introduces the "Gastrointestinal Circuit," a low-cost, active learning activity using large visual materials and interactive tasks to enhance undergraduate teaching of gastrointestinal physiology. Seventy students from Nursing, Speech-Language Pathology, and Biological Sciences participated in a pretest-posttest design and opinion survey. Results showed significant learning gains (P ≤ 0.05), particularly in the areas of gastroint…

A middle-aged woman presented with a three-month history of sudden-onset persistent dry cough, with no preceding respiratory illness or significant medical history. She was an active smoker with a prior heavy smoking history. Initial investigations, including chest imaging, computed tomography of the neck and thorax, pulmonary function testing, and otolaryngological assessment, were normal. Speech and language therapy evaluation did not reveal any abnormalities of breathing or voice function. Flexible bronchoscopy demonstrated normal lower airway anatomy but revealed marked laryngeal hypersens

A 62-year-old male presented with progressive isolated writing and spelling difficulties. Neurological, neuropsychological, speech, and language evaluations identified only minimal additional abnormalities. The presenting characteristics did not meet criteria for any particular variant of primary progressive aphasia; his clinical presentation is best described as primary progressive aphasia, with a predominant, almost pure agraphia. Brain MRI showed asymmetric, bilateral parenchymal volume loss, with left hippocampal atrophy. Fluorodeoxyglucose-F18 positron emission tomography showed hypometab

UNLABELLED: In recent years, researchers have provided data to show that individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) can learn new information and functional behaviors, despite significant declarative memory deficits. However, clinicians in long-term care frequently have difficulty justifying and providing needed services to persons with Alzheimer's disease in LTC settings. In this paper, implicit learning will be discussed as a theoretical rationale to support rehabilitation along with practical issues related to the provision of speech-language pathology services for residents with Alzheimer's…

INTRODUCTION: Voice data combined with large language models may detect cognitive impairment, yet an interpretable framework has not been formally established. We developed and validated a scalable and interpretable framework, the Neurocognitive Speech Taxonomy (NST).
METHODS: NST maps 314 voice features to 7 neurocognitive domains derived from neuropsychology, speech pathology, neurology and related fields. The domains capture features including articulatory precision, cognitive-linguistic, executive fluency & planning, phonation & laryngeal control, prosodic modulation, lexical-semantic, an

BACKGROUND: South Africa's speech-language therapy (SLT) and audiology professions face challenges in achieving linguistic and cultural integration (i.e., the meaningful incorporation of diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives into training and practice), a critical aspect for effectively serving the country's diverse population. Limited curriculum content on indigenous languages and cultural competence, along with low diversity of academic and clinical training staff (staff), may hinder students' preparedness for multilingual and multicultural clinical practice. This study explored under

Accurate detection and classification of aspiration is a critical component of videofluoroscopic swallowing evaluation, the most commonly utilized instrumental method for dysphagia diagnosis and treatment. Currently published literature indicates that interjudge reliability for the identification of aspiration ranges from poor to fairly good depending on the amount of training provided to clinicians. The majority of extant studies compared judgments among clinicians. No studies included judgments made during the use of a postural compensatory strategy. The purpose of this study was to examine
