[Establishment and evaluation of a rabbit model of frozen shoulder induced by persistent strain injuries and ice compression].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the rabbit modle of frozen shoulder induced by persistent strain injuries and ice compression. METHODS: Twelve clean, healthy male New Zealand rabbits with a mass of (2 500±500) g were selected and randomly divided into a blank group and a control group with 6 rabbits in each group. In the control group, the rabbits were modeled with persistent strain injuries and ice compression, the general conditions of the rabbits and the active and passive activities of the shoulder joint were observed and their body weights were recorded. MRI was performed on the affected shoulder

Acute Ankle Sprain in Elite Athletes: How to Get Them Back to the Game?

Despite the high frequency of ankle sprains, the ideal management is controversial, and a significant percentage of patients sustaining an ankle sprain never fully recover. There is strong evidence that residual disability of ankle joint injury is often caused by an inadequate rehabilitation and training program and early return to sports. Therefore, the athlete should start their criteria-based rehabilitation and gradually progress through the programmed activities, including cryotherapy, edema relief, optimal weight-bearing management, range of motion exercises for ankle dorsiflexion improve

Ankle Sprain History Does Not Significantly Alter Single- and Dual-Task Spatiotemporal Gait Mechanics.

CONTEXT: Single- and dual-task walking gait assessments have been used to identify persistent movement and cognitive dysfunction among athletes with concussions. However, it is unclear whether previous ankle sprain injuries confound these outcomes during baseline testing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of (1) ankle sprain history and (2) time since prior ankle sprain injury on single- and dual-task spatiotemporal gait outcomes and cognitive measures. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We assessed 60 college Division-I athletes (31 with ankle sprain history; 13 fe

In Patients with Grade I and II Ankle Sprains, Dynamic Taping Seems to Be Helpful during Certain Tasks, Exercises and Tests in Selected Phases of the Rehabilitation Process: A Preliminary Report.

We aimed to investigate changes in postural stability on a stable surface after the application of dynamic tape for patients with inversion ankle sprains. This study enrolled 30 patients (age 25.5 ± 8.0 years) with grade I and II ankle sprains, which occurred 7−21 days before enrolment. Postural stability (balance, coordination, feedback) was assessed before and after the application of dynamic tape using a stabilographic platform. Three 32-s exercises were performed on the stabilographic platform, one with eyes open, one with eyes closed and one with visual feedback. After the application of

Patients Experience Significant and Meaningful Changes in Self-Report of Function During the First 2 Weeks After an Ankle Sprain Injury: A Report From the Athletic Training Practice-Based Research Network.

CONTEXT: Ankle sprains are common during sport participation and associated with long-term deficits in self-report of function. However, little is known of short-term changes in self-report of function following injury. The authors aimed to assess statistical and clinically meaningful changes in self-report of function, as measured by the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), during the first 2 weeks after an ankle sprain injury. DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of electronic medical records. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients, who were diagnosed with an ankle sprain injury by an athletic train

Treatment and outcome of a patient with low-energy 'Logsplitter' injury.

The low-energy 'Logsplitter' fracture, caused by a sprain or fall, is characterized by an intact or slightly separated inferior tibiofibular joint. Compared with the high-energy 'Logsplitter' fracture, this atypical subtype is rarely seen and is easily missed. Here, the case of a 33-year-old male patient with a fractured right ankle as a result of a sprain during walking is reported. The patient initially received routine surgical treatment comprising internal fixation of the fibular, medial and posterior malleoli. Unexpectedly, post-surgery imaging examinations revealed that the medial clear

Association of Ankle Sprain Frequency With Body Mass and Self-Reported Function: A Pooled Multisite Analysis.

CONTEXT: Ankle sprains result in pain and disability. While factors such as body mass and prior injury contribute to subsequent injury, the association of the number of ankle sprains on body anthropometrics and self-reported function are unclear in this population. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to assess differences in anthropometric measurements and self-reported function between the number of ankle sprains utilizing a large, pooled data set. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: Data were pooled from 14 studies (total N = 412) collected by the Chronic Ankle Instability Outco

Is lateral ankle sprain of the child and adolescent a myth or a reality? A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ankle trauma in children and adolescents is the most common orthopedic injury encountered in pediatric trauma. It has long been recognized that a lateral ankle injury in this population is often a Salter and Harris type I fracture of the distal fibula (SH1). The purpose of this study is to confirm the existence of a lateral ankle sprain and to report the incidence of each pathology of the lateral ankle compartment: SH1 fracture, ATFL injury, and osteochondral avulsions. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature is done using the database provided by PubMed and Embase. All art

Quantitative assessments of static and dynamic balance performance in patients with chronic ankle instability.

Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) have postural-control deficits during center-of-pressure excursions than do healthy individuals. While an external analysis of center-of-pressure excursions in CAI has been performed, a quantitative analysis of center-of-gravity movements, to detect the balance deficits associated with CAI, has yet to be performed. Therefore, the aim of the study is to quantify the balance deficits in patients with unilateral CAI.Forty-four patients with unilateral CAI (24 men; age, 31.7 ± 5.5 years) and 26 uninjured volunteers (12 men; age, 28.6 ± 5.9 years) under

Primary Synovial Osteochondromatosis Discovered After Ankle Sprain.

A 23-year-old military cadet presented to a direct-access physical therapy clinic for an ankle sprain 1 day after inverting his left ankle. Following examination, the physical therapist ordered lower-leg radiographs, which showed no fracture; however, small, rounded, partially calcified bodies were noted in the ankle. Additional ankle imaging was ordered under radiologist guidance. Preoperative computed tomography of the cadet's left ankle, ordered by orthopaedics, demonstrated chondral and osteochondral bodies. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2019;49(4):284. doi:10.2519/jospt.2019.8383.

Sports Medicine: Fractures, Sprains, and Other Musculoskeletal Injuries.

Family physicians commonly treat athletes with simple fractures and other musculoskeletal injuries that require temporary immobilization. Certain fractures (eg, intraarticular, multiple, open, associated with dislocations or tendon injury) typically are managed by orthopedic subspecialists. During the healing process, a custom-molded or prefabricated orthopedic support, known as an orthosis, may be used to support the injured area and prevent reinjury. To reduce the risk of complications that may develop from orthosis use, timely follow-up is required. Proficiency in specific orthotic applicat

WITHDRAWN: Immobilisation and functional treatment for acute lateral ankle ligament injuries in adults.

BACKGROUND: Acute lateral ankle ligament injuries (ankle sprains) are common problems in acute medical care. The treatment variation observed for the acutely injured lateral ankle ligament complex suggests a lack of evidence-based management strategies for this problem. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effectiveness of methods of immobilisation for acute lateral ankle ligament injuries and to compare immobilisation with functional treatment methods. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group specialised register (December 2001); the

The effects of prophylactic ankle bracing on dynamic reach distance and obstacle course performance in military cadets.

Ankle braces can protect the ankle joint from ligament sprains and fractures during high-risk military activities such as physical training and parachuting. Although braces are recommended for injury prevention purposes, the impact of braces on physical performance is unknown. This study evaluated lace-up ankle braces, worn inside the boots, across three conditions: no brace, unilateral brace, and bilateral brace on the dependent variables of dynamic lower extremity reach and obstacle course performance. Thirty-seven military cadets were tested over 3 days. Ankle bracing had a small effect upo

How to sprain your ankle - a biomechanical case report of an inversion trauma.

In order to develop preventive measures against lateral ankle sprains, it is essential to have a detailed understanding of the injury mechanism. Under laboratory experimental conditions the examination of the joint load has to be restricted with clear margins of safety. However, in the present case one athlete sprained his ankle while performing a run-and-cut movement during a biomechanical research experiment. 3D kinematics, kinetics, and muscle activity of the lower limb were recorded and compared to 16 previously performed trials. Motion patterns of global pelvis orientation, hip flexion, a

Stress and strain analysis of contractions during ramp distension in partially obstructed guinea pig jejunal segments.

Previous studies have demonstrated morphological and biomechanical remodeling in the intestine proximal to an obstruction. The present study aimed to obtain stress and strain thresholds to initiate contraction and the maximal contraction stress and strain in partially obstructed guinea pig jejunal segments. Partial obstruction and sham operations were surgically created in mid-jejunum of male guinea pigs. The animals survived 2, 4, 7 and 14 days. Animals not being operated on served as normal controls. The segments were used for no-load state, zero-stress state and distension analyses. The seg

Evaluation and imaging of an untreated grade III hamstring tear: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strains are one of the most common complaints treated by physicians. High-force lengthening contractions can produce very high forces resulting in pain and tissue damage; such strains are the most common cause of muscle injuries. The hamstring muscles are particularly susceptible as they cross two joints and regularly perform lengthening contractions during running. We describe a patient with return to full function after a large hamstring tear. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 26-year-old man who presented 1 year after a noncontact, left-sided proximal hamstring t
