Prevalence of Hearing, Vision and Cognitive Impairment and Impact in Older Adults in Home Care: A Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Hearing, vision and cognitive impairments are common yet frequently underrecognized among older adults. Although these impairments affect quality of life, functional independence and psychological well-being, there are no published data on the prevalence and consequences of these impairments in relation to Australian home care populations. This protocol outlines a cross-sectional investigation into the prevalence of hearing, vision and cognitive impairments and their associations with quality of life, functional ability and psychosocial well-being among older Australians receiving

Co-designing solutions to tackle food insecurity in higher education settings: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity (FI) in the higher education setting is a pressing social justice and public health nutrition issue. Persistent FI rates among students suggest that the current programmes and institutional policies are inadequate. Engaging the community in co-design practices can enhance research and decision-making, leading to more targeted advocacy and solutions. This review describes and evaluates evidence of co-design approaches and identifies strategies for addressing FI in higher education settings. DESIGN: A review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for System

Multidimensional structural racism and estimated cancer risk from traffic-related air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollutants have been associated with a variety of adverse human health impacts, including cancers. In the United States, numerous studies have documented racial inequities in neighborhood exposures to traffic-related air pollution. Emerging evidence suggests that structural racism may influence neighborhood exposures to air pollutants. However, existing research has largely focused on residential racial segregation, one indicator of structural racism. This study developed a multidimensional measure of structural racism to examine the relationship between structu

Understanding the Experience and Impacts of Brain Fog in Chronic Pain: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 15% to 40% of persons with chronic pain as a primary disorder experience brain fog. Prior research has investigated the etiology of "brain fog" in conditions in which pain presents as a key feature (e.g., fibromyalgia). However, it remains understudied in the context of chronic 10 musculoskeletal pain. Following current scoping review guidelines, we obtained stakeholder input from patient and health care professionals (HCPs) to define this phenomenon. Specific aims of this review were to (1) identify factors contributing to brain fog, (2) identify the functional cor

Enhancing passive surveillance for African swine fever detection on U.S. swine farms.

As the threat of African swine fever (ASF) introduction into new areas continues, animal health officials and epidemiologists need novel tools for early detection and surveillance. Passive surveillance from swine producers and veterinarians is critical to identify cases, especially the first introduction. Enhanced passive surveillance (EPS) protocols are needed that maximize temporal sensitivity for early ASF detection yet are easily implemented. Regularly collected production and disease data on swine farms may pose an opportunity for developing EPS protocols. To better understand the types o

Data to Care: Lessons Learned From Delivering Technical Assistance to 20 Health Departments.

BACKGROUND: Data to Care (D2C) is a public health strategy that uses HIV surveillance and other data to identify persons living with HIV who are "not in care" to link them to medical care or other services. To support health department implementation of D2C, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention supported direct technical assistance (TA) to build health department D2C capacity. METHODS: Between 2013 and 2017, 2 contracting organizations worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide intensive D2C TA to 20 US health departments. A requirement for applying for TA

Design of a study evaluating the effects, health economics, and stakeholder perspectives of a multi-component occupational rehabilitation program with an added workplace intervention - a  study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has suggested that interventions at the workplace might be the most potent ingredient in return to work interventions, but few studies have investigated the different effects of workplace interventions as part of occupational rehabilitation programs. The comprehensive design described in this article includes effect (on return to work and health outcomes), and health economic evaluations of a workplace intervention added to a multicomponent rehabilitation program. Qualitative and mixed method studies will investigate sick-listed persons', rehabilitation therapists'

Understanding the stakeholders' preferences on a mobile application to reduce door to balloon time in the management of ST-elevated myocardial infarction patients - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a critical and time-sensitive emergency. The survival depends on prompt initiation of treatment requiring high precision and multi-level coordination between healthcare staff. The use of a mobile application may facilitate prompt management and shorten the door-to-balloon time by capturing information at the point of care and provide immediate feedback to all healthcare staff involved in STEMI management. The objective of the present study has two primary components: (i) to explore the suggestions and opinions of stakeholders in the deve

Perspectives on consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness from brain injury: group concept mapping study across clinic, research, and families.

BACKGROUND: An effective healthcare system depends on clinic, research, and patient/relatives interactions. Such interactions may at their core be challenged by misalignments of concepts and the practices that constitute them. The concept of consciousness and what is experienced and understood as signs of consciousness in patients with severe acquired brain injury is one of these potential areas of misalignment. Different perspectives and experiences of consciousness are challenging the delivery of care and the high-stake decision-making process on the potential withdrawal of treatment. The en

Between opportunity and equity: navigating medical tourism in Türkiye's public hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Medical tourism has been proposed as a potential means of using available capacity in public hospitals, generating additional revenue, and supporting healthcare investment. However, public-sector participation also raises concerns regarding organizational readiness, resource allocation, and equitable access for local patients. Türkiye, with its extensive healthcare infrastructure and cost advantages, has become an important medical tourism destination where both public and private hospitals provide services to international patients. This study explored institutional stakeholders'

Exploring the feasibility and acceptability of integrating screening for gender-based violence into HIV counselling and testing for adolescent girls and young women in Tanzania and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) undermines HIV prevention and treatment cascades, particularly among women who report partner violence. Screening for violence during HIV testing, and prior to offering pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to HIV uninfected women, provides an opportunity to identify those at heightened HIV risk and greater potential for non-adherence or early discontinuation of PrEP. The paper describes our experience with offering integrated GBV screening and referral as part of HIV counselling and testing. This component was implemented within EMPOWER, a demonstration proje

Experience of Youths and Older People With Virtual Reality Games for Cognitive Assessment: Inductive Thematic Analysis and Insights for Key Stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR)-based goal-oriented games for cognitive assessment are rapidly emerging and progressively being used in neuropsychological settings. These games have been validated quantitatively, but minimal qualitative insights from users currently exist. Such insights on user experience are essential to answering critical questions linked to the games' large-scale usability, adoption in hospital settings, and game design refinement. Current qualitative studies on these games have used general questionnaires or web-based reviews to answer these questions, but direct observat

Perceptions of health care providers involved in organ donation or transplantation on cardiac donation after death by circulatory criteria: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Cardiac donation after death determination by circulatory criteria (DCC) can be performed using either 1) direct procurement and perfusion of ex situ organs or 2) normothermic regional perfusion (NRP). Nevertheless, there are concerns regarding the acceptability and ethics of these procedures, particularly NRP in which the blood supply to the brain is surgically interrupted and circulation in the thorax and abdomen is restored prior to heart retrieval. We aimed to understand the perspectives on cardiac donation following DCC of Canadian clinicians who are involved in donation and tran
