The application of blood flow sound contrastive learning to predict arteriovenous graft stenosis of patients with hemodialysis.

End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) presents a significant public health challenge, with hemodialysis (HD) remaining one of the most prevalent kidney replacement therapies. Ensuring the longevity and functionality of arteriovenous accesses is challenging for HD patients. Blood flow sound, which contains valuable information, has often been neglected in the past. However, machine learning offers a new approach, leveraging data non-invasively and learning autonomously to match the experience of healthcare professionas. This study aimed to devise a model for detecting arteriovenous grafts (AVGs) sten

A CAD system for automatic dysplasia grading on H&E cervical whole-slide images.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common female cancer worldwide and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Nonetheless, it is also among the most successfully preventable and treatable types of cancer, provided it is early identified and properly managed. As such, the detection of pre-cancerous lesions is crucial. These lesions are detected in the squamous epithelium of the uterine cervix and are graded as low- or high-grade intraepithelial squamous lesions, known as LSIL and HSIL, respectively. Due to their complex nature, this classification can become very subjective.

Machine learning approach to integrated endometrial transcriptomic datasets reveals biomarkers predicting uterine receptivity in cattle at seven days after estrous.

The main goal was to apply machine learning (ML) methods on integrated multi-transcriptomic data, to identify endometrial genes capable of predicting uterine receptivity according to their expression patterns in the cow. Public data from five studies were re-analyzed. In all of them, endometrial samples were obtained at day 6-7 of the estrous cycle, from cows or heifers of four different European breeds, classified as pregnant (n = 26) or not (n = 26). First, gene selection was performed through supervised and unsupervised ML algorithms. Then, the predictive ability of potential key genes was

Classification of Huntington's disease stage with support vector machines: A study on oculomotor performance.

Alterations in oculomotor performance are among the first observable physical alterations during presymptomatic stages of Huntington's disease (HD). Quantifiable measurements of oculomotor performance have been studied as possible markers of disease status and progression in presymptomatic and early symptomatic stages of HD, on the basis of traditional analysis methods. Whether oculomotor performance can be used to classify individuals according to HD disease stage has yet to be explored via the application of machine-learning methods. In the present study, we report the application of the sup

A new hybrid intelligent system for accurate detection of Parkinson's disease.

Elderly people are commonly affected by Parkinson's disease (PD) which is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders due to the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. People with PD's (PWP) may have difficulty in walking, talking or completing other simple tasks. Variety of medications is available to treat PD. Recently, researchers have found that voice signals recorded from the PWP is becoming a useful tool to differentiate them from healthy controls. Several dysphonia features, feature reduction/selection techniques and classification algorithms were proposed by researchers in the

Evaluation of the gut microbiome in association with biological signatures of inflammation in murine polytrauma and shock.

Severe injuries are frequently accompanied by hemorrhagic shock and harbor an increased risk for complications. Local or systemic inflammation after trauma/hemorrhage may lead to a leaky intestinal epithelial barrier and subsequent translocation of gut microbiota, potentially worsening outcomes. To evaluate the extent with which trauma affects the gut microbiota composition, we performed a post hoc analysis of a murine model of polytrauma and hemorrhage. Four hours after injury, organs and plasma samples were collected, and the diversity and composition of the cecal microbiome were evaluated u

A hybrid few-shot multiple-instance learning model predicting the aggressiveness of lymphoma in PET/CT images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) undergo distinct therapy strategies compared with indolent NHL patients. However, it is challenging to estimate NHL aggressiveness based on visual inspection of positron emission tomography (PET) or computed tomography (CT) images. Since diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Follicular lymphoma (FL) are the most typical and dominant aggressive and indolent NHL, respectively, this study aims to develop an artificial-intelligence-enabled model to distinguish DLBCL from FL in PET/CT images as the first step to tackl

AET5: A transcriptome-guided molecular generation framework with contrastive self-supervised learning.

Gene expression profiles capture system-level drug responses and offer a promising basis for de novo molecular generation. However, their application is limited by data sparsity and experimental noise, which hinder the reliable mapping between disease-associated transcriptomic perturbations and chemically valid therapeutic molecules. Here, we present AET5, a de novo molecular generation framework that conditions molecular design on disease-reversal gene expression profiles. AET5 integrates contrastive self-supervised learning with pre-trained sequence-to-sequence models to learn robust associa

Lightweight Techniques to Improve Generalization and Robustness of U-Net Based Networks for Pulmonary Lobe Segmentation.

Lung lobe segmentation in chest CT is relevant to a wide range of clinical applications. However, existing segmentation pipelines often exhibit vulnerabilities and performance degradations when applied to external datasets. This is usually attributed to the size of the available dataset or model. We show that it is possible to enhance generalizability without huge resources by carefully curating the dataset and combining machine learning with medical expertise. Multiple machine learning techniques (self-supervision (SSL), attention (A), and data augmentation (DA)) are used to train a fast and
