Not only gustatory sweating and flushing: Signs and symptoms associated to the Frey syndrome and the role of botulinum toxin A therapy.

BACKGROUND: The classic symptoms of Frey syndrome are gustatory sweating and flushing. Aims of the study were to describe prevalenceand severity of typical and atypical presentations of the disorder and to assess the effects of botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) therapy in patients with Frey syndrome after parotidectomy. METHODS: In this prospective, observational study on 18 patients, we assessed symptom severity before therapy, after 15 days, 1, 3 and 6 months' follow-up with the sweating-flushing-itch-paresthesia-pain (SFIPP) Frey scale specifically designed by the authors themselves for this…

Doctor, I am sweating on just one side of my body: unilateral hyperhidrosis associated with mesothelioma.

Unilateral hyperhidrosis is rare and should prompt a thorough review for potentially serious underlying etiologies. Available treatments for unilateral hyperhidrosis secondary to mesothelioma are limited and its presence as a symptom usually signifies advanced disease and a poor prognosis.

Sweat it out? The effects of physical exercise on cognition and behavior in children and adults with ADHD: a systematic literature review.

As attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed developmental disorders in childhood, effective yet safe treatment options are highly important. Recent research introduced physical exercise as a potential treatment option, particularly for children with ADHD. The aim of this review was to systematically analyze potential acute and chronic effects of cardio and non-cardio exercise on a broad range of functions in children with ADHD and to explore this in adults as well. Literature on physical exercise in patients with ADHD was systematically reviewed b

Bilateral gustatory sweating in the submandibular region after bilateral neck dissection successfully treated with botulinum toxin.

Gustatory sweating (or chorda tympani syndrome) in the submandibular region is a rare complication of cervical surgery. We report a 66-year-old patient who had been referred for the management of a squamous cell carcinoma of the mobile tongue. She was treated by bilateral neck dissection and bilateral resection of the submandibular glands. Bilateral gustatory sweating in the submandibular region developed 10 years later and was successfully treated with bilateral injections of botulinum toxin type A.

Cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1, with a CRLF1 level mutation, previously associated with Crisponi syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1 (CISS1) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis caused by mutations in the CRLF1 gene, characterized by profuse sweating when the ambient temperature is below 22°C and morphological alterations. CRLF1 mutations also cause Crisponi syndrome (CS), which presents neonatal muscle contractions, morphological disorders and alterations in the autonomous nervous system. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old man sought treatment for profuse sweating. His medical record included neonatal admission for generalized hypertonicity. Clinical examination revealed…

Cold-induced sweating syndrome: CISS1 and CISS2: manifestations from infancy to adulthood. Four new cases.

Cold-induced sweating syndrome (CISS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder, is genetically heterogeneous. Deficiency of the CRLF1 and the CLCF1 gene functions results in CISS1 and CISS2, respectively. So far, only a single patient with CISS2 has been reported. Here we describe four new cases of CISS, two additional patients with CISS2 (confirming locus heterogeneity) and two patients with CISS1. Their case histories are given in detail to emphasize the striking similarity of their presentation, which makes a clinical differentiation impossible. All four cases had a uniform presentation in the …

Botulinum toxin in the treatment of sweat-worsened foot problems in patients with epidermolysis bullosa simplex and pachyonychia congenita.

BACKGROUND: Painful foot blistering is a common problem in patients with epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) and pachyonychia congenita (PC). Hyperhidrosis, a condition which can be effectively blocked by plantar injections of botulinum toxin (Btx), often exacerbates the blistering. OBJECTIVES: A retrospective evaluation of the effects of Btx injections in 14 patients with EBS and PC with foot blisters and painful callosities. METHODS: After informed consent, patients with EBS (n = 6) and PC (n = 8), aged 7-66 years, who had received Btx therapy at our centre since 2003, were included. The t

Effect of posture on the thermal efficiency of a plastic bag wrapping in neonate: assessment using a thermal "sweating" mannequin.

To assess the various heat exchanges with the environment a multisegment, anthropometric, thermal mannequin representing a neonate with a birth weight of 900 g has been designed. The mannequin simulates not only dry heat loss (radiative+conductive+convective body heat exchanges) but also the evaporative skin water loss which can be encountered in low-birth-weight neonates. The model was placed in the supine or prone position in a closed incubator (air temperature, 33 C; relative air humidity, 50%; air velocity below 0.1 m s(-1)). Experiments were performed with the mannequin either naked or wr

Endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy for upper limb hyperhidrosis: limited sympathectomy does not reduce postoperative compensatory sweating.

OBJECTIVE: Compensatory sweating is the most common and troublesome complication of thoracodorsal sympathectomy. Whether the magnitude of compensatory sweating is related to the extent of sympathectomy is unclear. We investigated the association between the extent of sympathectomy and the occurrence and severity of compensatory sweating after endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy for upper limb hyperhidrosis. METHODS: From September 1992 to June 2000, data from patients undergoing thoracoscopic sympathectomy to treat primary upper limb hyperhidrosis in our department were prospectively colle…

[Study on the relationship between epidermal stem cells and the developing process of sweat gland in human fetal skin].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between epidermal stem cells and the developing process of sweat gland in human fetal skin, so as to obtain a hint for future induction of epidermal stem cells to differentiate into sweat gland cells. METHODS: Total layer of human skin from the back of fetus at gestational ages from 11 to 31 weeks, obtained from spontaneous abortion was routinely examined. The expressions of beta1 integrin and keratin 19 in sweat gland cords or buds and mature sweat gland cells were dynamically observed with SP immunohistochemical technique. The development and maturatio…

Associated change in plantar temperature and sweating after transthoracic endoscopic T2-3 sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis.

OBJECT: Transthoracic endoscopic T2-3 sympathectomy is currently the treatment of choice for palmar hyperhidrosis. Compensatory sweating of the face, trunk, thigh, and sole of the foot was found in more than 50% of patients who underwent this procedure. The authors conducted this study to investigate the associated intraoperative changes in plantar skin temperature and postoperative plantar sweating. METHODS: One hundred patients with palmar hyperhidrosis underwent bilateral transthoracic endoscopic T2-3 sympathectomy. There were 60 female and 40 male patients who ranged in age from 13 to 40 …

The effects of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and substance P on methacholine-induced sweating and vascular flare in diabetic neuropathy.

Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and substance P (SP) immunoreactivity are reduced in the cutaneous nerves of diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy. The functional significance of this finding was studied by measuring the forearm sweat response to intradermal methacholine and the effect of coadministration of VIP and SP in six normal subjects, and in six diabetic patients with neuropathy and eight without. Flare responses to the two peptides were also measured. Methacholine-induced sweat output was significantly greater in neuropathic patients compared with the other groups (p < …

A dual-band radio-frequency biosensing platform with physics-informed deep learning for simultaneous sweat pH and lactate monitoring.

Continuous monitoring of sweat pH and lactate is of great value for physiological assessment, yet existing sensors face two critical bottlenecks: prolonged response times that hinder real-time tracking, and signal decoding relying on simple linear calibration that fails to handle nonlinearities and dynamic hysteresis. Here, we report a synergistic "RF-materials-AI" dual-band biosensing platform integrating (1) a stub-loaded dual-resonance microstrip antenna at 2.61 GHz and 3.98 GHz for frequency-domain discrimination of pH and lactate responses; (2) ternary nanocomposite interfaces-rGO/TiO₂/MW…

A multimodal wearable microfluidic platform for in situ sweat cortisol monitoring with a NiHCF-enabled molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor.

Cortisol is a key biomarker of stress, circadian regulation and exercise-related physiological responses. However, conventional assays based on blood, saliva, or urine are poorly suited to non-invasive and field-deployable physiological assessment. Here we report a skin-interfaced wearable microfluidic platform for in situ sweat cortisol analysis using a nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF)-enabled molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor. The NiHCF redox transducer enhances electrochemical stability in physiologically relevant media, while the polypyrrole (PPy)-based molecularly imprinted poly…

High-throughput UHPLC-MS/MS analysis of Cystatin C proteoforms and creatinine in human sweat for kidney function monitoring.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health concern, requiring timely and accurate assessment of kidney function for effective patient management. Creatinine and Cystatin-C (CysC) are well-established biomarkers for estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), a fundamental parameter for CKD monitoring. However, routine clinical assessment relies on invasive blood sampling and analytical methods with limited molecular specificity, particularly for CysC, which is predominantly measured using immunoassays. Sweat has recently emerged as a promising non-invasive biofluid that enables re…
