The electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve allows to record steady field potentials in the olfactory bulb of the trout Salmo gairdneri. 200 microns separate recording points which are localised on a tridimensional network. At 18, 24, 30 and 38 ms the amplitudes are measured and plotted in a calculator which determines the isopotentials in any vertical, horizontal and sagittal planes. With this method, we have an instantaneous and global vision of bulbar activity and we observe striking anatomo-functional correlations in the olfactory bulb of Salmo gairdneri.

Mechano-electric transduction and neuronal transmission were studied in sensory systems ascending from and descending to single receptor cells of the labyrinth organs in submammalian vertebrates. The animals were young crocodiles (Caiman crocodilus), geckos (Gekko gecko, Tarentola mauritanica), and turtles (Pseudemys scripta elegans, Chinemys reevesii). Intracellular receptor potentials from the apical region of the hair cell (or from the ciliary surface) were recorded in the ampullar, macular, and papillar sensory cells. These single-cell responses are, within limits, proportional to stimulus

The blockade of effects induced by percutaneous peripheral stimulation were abolished by injection of an opiate antagonist as nalorphine. Our results lead to the hypothesis that central and peripheral stimulations act by the same mechanism in producing blockade of noxious impulses. One may suggest that peripheral stimulations induce release of endogenous morphine-like substances which in turn give descending inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Long-term synaptic plasticity is a ubiquitous form of neuronal plasticity that regulates the strength of synaptic transmission in many brain areas. However, most data on long-term potentiation and long-term depression rely on research in animal brain slices. The role of synaptic plasticity in physiology and pathology of the functioning human brain remains obscure. Considering recent studies that provided evidence for a dysfunction of brain plasticity as the neurobiological basis of affective disorders, we assessed neural transmission and its plastic modulation in the visual pathway…

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) frequently manifests in visuomotor impairments, disrupting cholinergic signaling from the brainstem to the Thalamic Reticular Nucleus (TRN). The contribution of this work lies in the development of a biologically informed computational framework to model astrocyte mediated restoration of synaptic transmission, measured by a 'release probability (PR)' in TRN under cholinergic depletion. The model simulates three physiological states-healthy, damaged, and recovered by incorporating dual astrocytic mechanisms i.e., depolarization induced suppression excitation (DSE) and e…

While Katz's Ca2+ hypothesis has defined that action potentials trigger neurotransmitter release through Ca2+-dependent secretion (CDS), recent discoveries of Ca2+-independent secretion (CiVDS) have demonstrated that action potentials per se can directly trigger exocytosis independent of Ca2+. However, a critical gap remains regarding how CDS and CiVDS coordinate to precisely control neurotransmitter release within a single neuron's soma and axons/terminals. Here, using high-resolution live imaging, we simultaneously visualized single-vesicle release in the somata and axons/terminals of indivi

At present, there is a good understanding of the negative neurobiological impacts that ethanol has on adolescent and adult brains; the effec … ing how aging influences critical proteins that affect neuronal excitability, nerve conduction, and synaptic transmission and how aging modifies the sensitivity of these proteins to ethanol. The data show limited information on ethanol's effects in the aged brains of mice and rats.

Synaptic strength can vary greatly between synapses. Optical quantal analysis at Drosophila glutamatergic motor neuron synapses shows that short-term plasticity also varies greatly between synapses, even those made by an individual motor neuron. Strong and weak synapses are randomly distributed in the motor neuron nerve terminal, as are facilitating and depressing synapses. Although synapses exhibit highly heterogeneous basal strength at low-action potential firing frequency and undergo varied plasticity when firing frequency increases, the overall distribution of strength across synapses rema

The brain contains the highest concentration of cholesterol in the human body, which emphasizes the importance of cholesterol in brain physiology. Cholesterol is involved in neurogenesis and synaptogenesis, and age-related reductions in cholesterol levels can lead to synaptic loss and impaired synaptic plasticity, which potentially contribute to neurodegeneration. The maintenance of cholesterol homeostasis in the neuronal plasma membrane is essential for normal brain function, and imbalances in cholesterol distribution are associated with various neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheime

Calcium ions play a key role in the physiological processes of the central nervous system. The intracellular calcium signal, in nerve cells, is part of the neurotransmission mechanism. They are responsible for stabilizing membrane potential and controlling the excitability of neurons. Calcium ions are a universal second messenger that participates in depolarizing signal transduction and contributes to synaptic activity. These ions take an active part in the mechanisms related to memory and learning. As a result of depolarization of the plasma membrane or stimulation of receptors, there is an e

An unusually large amplitude spontaneous miniature endplate potentials (gMEPPs) occur naturally at low frequency at the vertebrate neuromuscular junction. Unlike the normal miniature endplate potentials (nMEPPs), these gMEPPs have long duration and long time to peak. More strikingly, gMEPPs seem to be independent of extracellular and intracellular Ca+2. and have a greater temperature sensitivity than nMEPPs. They are potentiated by tetrodotoxin but inhibited by acetylcholine (ACh) receptor blockers indicating ACh is the neurotransmitter responsible for gMEPPs. The frequency of gMEPPs is greatl

Fear conditioning constitutes the best and most reproducible paradigm to study the neurobiological mechanisms underlying emotions. On the other hand, studies on the synaptic plasticity phenomena underlying fear conditioning present neural circuits enforcing this learning pattern related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Notably, in both humans and the rodent model, fear conditioning and context rely on dependent neurocircuitry in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, and hippocampus. In this review, an overview of the role that classical neurotransmitters play in the con

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a late-onset neurodegenerative disease defined pathologically by the presence of insoluble phosphorylated-Tau (p-Tau) in neurons and glia. Identifying co-aggregating proteins within p-Tau inclusions may reveal important insights into processes affected by the aggregation of Tau. We used a proteomic approach, which combines antibody-mediated biotinylation and mass spectrometry (MS) to identify proteins proximal to p-Tau in PSP. Using this proof-of-concept workflow for identifying interacting proteins of interest, we characterized proteins proximal to p-Ta
