[Asperger's syndrome].

In the revised diagnostic systems ICD-10 and DSM-IV Asperger's syndrome is listed as a subgroup under Pervasive developmental disorders. It has been argued that persons with this syndrome have similar characteristics as high functioning autists. The knowledge now available about autism is useful for understanding Asperger's syndrome, also when it comes to treatment strategies. The authors discuss differential diagnoses and assessment programmes.

[Syndrome "X"].

Already in 1988 Raeven mentioned a syndrome of resistance to insulin (X-syndrome). Before and after that description, several studies featured the central role of tissue resistance to the effects of endogenous insulin during development of diverse biological disturbances: adipositas, intolerance to glucose (or diabetes mellitus), arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis. The author summarizes the available literature on this 'new' syndrome that has hitherto not yet been accepted by all scientists. However, although data so far do not always coincide, many recent results give eviden…

[Rett syndrome].

Rett syndrome was described relatively recently. It affects only females and is characterized by progressive deterioration of neurological status and impairment of psychomotor development. Psychomotor development is normal in the first year of life, but then there is deterioration of fine motor and language skills and later still, of gross motor skills. This results in severe motor function handicap and dementia. The arrested head growth, severe psychomotor retardation and typical "washing hands" movements are typical of Rett syndrome. We describe a 3-year-old Bedouin girl with the clinical pi…

[Proteus syndrome].

We report the case of a 4-year old boy presenting with a polymalformative syndrome made of cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions associated with visceral and skeletal lesions. The cutaneous lesions consisted of 3 verrucous hamartomas, one haemangioma and one lymphangioma. The subcutaneous lesions were melting of panniculus adiposus, plantar tumefaction and diffuse lipomatosis of the peritoneal and retroperitoneal cavities. The skeletal lesions were uneven lower limbs and dorsal scoliosis. Atrophy of the intestinal villi was also found. The diagnosis of Proteus syndrome was made.

[Alport's syndrome].

After a historical introduction the authors analyze contemporary views on the aetiology, pathogenesis and genetics, they characterize the clinical picture and histopathological findings in Alport's syndrome. They emphasize that Alport's syndrome is more frequent than generally reported and that it deserves therefore appropriate attention in the differential diagnosis of renal diseases. They draw attention to the results of most recent genetic research which makes it possible to detect gene carriers of Alport's syndrome as well as early prenatal and postnatal diagnosis of this most frequently p…

[Intersection syndrome].

The causes, symptoms and therapy of intersection syndrome are discussed, cases presented and the literature reviewed. If intersection syndrome does not respond favorably to conservative treatment, we perform synovialectomy and incision of the thick fascia of the abductor pollicis longus muscle.

Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman (happy puppet) syndrome is a neuro-developmental condition characterized by an ataxic gait with puppet-like limb movements, paroxysmal bouts of laughter and severe mental retardation. Although considered a rare condition, over 140 cases have been documented since its designation in 1965. To date, only one study has been published investigating the ocular defects of Angelman syndrome. METHODS: In this paper we report the cognitive, motor, systemic, and oculo-visual findings of a 3 year old child with Angelman syndrome. RESULTS: The oculo-visual findings include choroidal …

SAPHO syndrome.

Four women with pustulosis palmoplantaris (PPP) and associated sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis are described. The connection between the two diseases is not coincidental: it is encountered in 9.4% of PPP patients, and was reported in the French literature as part of the SAPHO (synovitis acne pustulosis hyperostosis osteomyelitis) syndrome. This syndrome is linked to the spondyloarthropathies, having an increased prevalence of HLA B27 and occurrence of sacroiliitis. None of our patients had HLA B27, but HLA A26 was found in the 3 patients examined. No conclusion can be drawn from this findin…

[Bartter syndrome].

Bartter's syndrome, sometimes a familial autosomal recessive condition, is characterized by hypokalaemia with normal kaliuresis, hyperreninaemia with secondary hyperaldosteronism, vascular resistance to angiotensin and overproduction of prostaglandins by the kidneys. This syndrome is rare but sometimes envisaged in patients with unexplained hypokalaemia, the main difficulty being to exclude intoxication with diuretics which is very similar in all respects. Its physiopathology is unknown, and the various hypotheses put forward since it was first described (vascular insensitiveness to angiotensi…

[Croup syndrome].

Common causes of acute laryngotracheobronchitis (LTB) are viral infections. More rarely, bacterial germs, unspecific irritants, foreign bodies, rachitic laryngospasm, mild malformation, tumours, C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency, bilateral vocal cord paralysis, and psychogenic laryngospasm may be responsible for croup. Symptoms similar to epiglottitis may occur in pharyngitis based on common bacterial tonsillitis or infectious mononucleosis and peritonsillar abscess. It is decisively important to establish a precise diagnosis to provide for an appropriate therapy. Viral croup of mild degree is
