Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a useful and relatively safe tool for the diagnosis and staging of pancreatic cancer. However, there have recently been several reports of tumor seeding after EUS-FNA of adenocarcinomas. A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to upper gastric pain. Examinations revealed a 20 mm mass in the pancreatic body, for which EUS-FNA was performed. The cytology of the lesion was adenocarcinoma, and the stage of the cancer was T3N0M0. The patient underwent surgery with curative intent, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with

PURPOSE: A phase II study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of gemcitabine and S-1 combination chemotherapy in patients with metastatic biliary tract cancer (BTC).
METHODS: Patients with pathologically confirmed, unresectable, recurrent, or metastatic adenocarcinoma that originated from the intrahepatic or extrahepatic biliary ducts or gallbladder were assessed for eligibility. The primary end point was the overall response rate (ORR). The treatment consisted of 1,000 mg/m(2) intravenous gemcitabine administered over 30 min on days 1 and 8, and 80 mg/m(2) oral S-1 on days 1-14

PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND: For the past decade, there have been few chemotherapy options for unresectable biliary tract cancer (BTC). Recently, however, combination therapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin plus S-1 (GCS) has been identified as a promising strategy. This retrospective study analyzes the clinical results of GCS therapy and subsequent conversion surgery (CS).
METHOD: We analyzed the clinical data of 60 consecutive patients who received GCS therapy for unresectable upper BTC at our university hospital during the 5 years between September, 2018 and December, 2022.
RESULTS: All patient

AIM: The TRICOLORE trial previously demonstrated that S-1 and irinotecan plus bevacizumab was non-inferior, based on progression-free survival (PFS), to 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and oxaliplatin (mFOLFOX6)/capecitabine and oxaliplatin (CapeOX) plus bevacizumab as first-line chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Overall survival (OS) data were immature at the time of the primary analysis.
METHODS: In total, 487 patients from 53 institutions with previously untreated mCRC were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either mFOLFOX6/CapeOX plus bevacizumab (control group) or S-1 and

Sorafenib and conventional systemic cytotoxicity chemotherapy are currently being used in parallel for the patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While sorafenib has been proven to improve the prognosis in patients with this malignant disease, however, the outcome of other newly developed systemic chemotherapeutic regimens remains controversial. We evaluated the outcome and safety of patients treated with the SOX regimen (oxaliplatin + S-1) and those treated with sorafenib in a single-center cohort. This retrospective study involved a total of 46 patients with advanced HCC, 22

This report describes very rare intramucosal gastric cancer with metastasis to 15 lymph nodes. A 65-year-old Japanese man was admitted to our hospital with epigastralgia. Endoscopic examination revealed a 3.5 cm type IIc ulcerated lesion on the posterior wall near the lesser curvature of the angle of the stomach with mucosal tumor invasion. Neither enlarged lymph nodes nor distant metastasis was revealed by abdominal computer tomography. He was treated by pylorus-preserving gastrectomy with lymph node dissection. A histological examination of biopsy specimens revealed signet-ring cell carcinom

A 29-year-old man developed a persistent dry cough. Chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) revealed centrilobular ultrafine granular shadows scattered in all lung fields. A lung biopsy with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery revealed findings compatible with pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM). However, the primary tumor was not identified. Combination chemotherapy with S-1 and cisplatin decreased his cough and improved the chest HRCT findings. The illness, however, gradually became difficult to control. He eventually developed pulmonary hypertension and died. Typical

This is an account of a case of primary adenocarcinoma of the small intestine with peritoneal dissemination successfully treated with chemotherapy. A 64-year-old woman was admitted with a complaint of severe abdominal distension. Abdominal computerized tomography revealed a bowel obstruction with tumor and the remarkable small bowel dilation of oral side of tumor. The tumor was found at surgery to be at the ileum 15 cm proximal from the ileocecal region. Peritoneal dissemination was recognized around the ileocecal region, so ileum partial resection was performed for the primary cancer lesion a

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced gastric/gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) adenocarcinoma faces high recurrence risks despite radical surgery. Perioperative chemotherapy (e.g., FLOT regimen) improves survival but has limited pathological complete response (pCR) rates and significant toxicity. Immunotherapy and anti-angiogenic agents show promise in advanced G/GEJ cancer. This trial evaluates fruquintinib (a VEGFR-1/2/3 inhibitor), sintilimab (PD-1 inhibitor), and SOX (oxaliplatin+S-1) as perioperative therapy for resectable locally advanced G/GEJ adenocarcinoma.
