Proteins produced by Streptococcus species in the lower respiratory tract can modify antiviral responses against influenza virus in respiratory epithelial cells.

Seasonal influenza spreads during winter in temperate countries. Primary viral pneumoniae resulting from aggravation triggers acute respiratory distress syndrome, which is a serious respiratory disorder. We have identified a unique pattern of lung microbiota in patients with the syndrome. In this study, we hypothesized that the unique microbiota was also associated with primary influenza viral pneumoniae. Bacterial culture supernatants of Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus mitis detected from the patients significantly increased viral replication (maximum 10-fold increase) in lung epitheli

Magnetically Guided Viral Transduction of Gene-Based Sensitization for Localized Photodynamic Therapy To Overcome Multidrug Resistance in Breast Cancer Cells.

Chemotherapy represents a conventional treatment for many cancers at different stages and is either solely prescribed or concomitant to surgery, radiotherapy, or both. However, treatment is tempered in instances of acquired drug resistance in response to either chemotherapy or targeted therapy, leading to therapeutic failure. To overcome this challenge, many studies focus on how cancer cells manipulate their genomes and metabolism to prevent drug influx and facilitate the efflux of accumulated chemotherapy drugs. Herein, we demonstrate magnetic adeno-associated virus serotype 2 (ironized AAV2)

Renal sympathetic denervation for blood pressure control: a review of the current evidence and ongoing studies.

Hypertensive heart disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States. Despite widespread availability of medical therapy, it remains a challenge to treat. Autonomic nervous system imbalance resulting in overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system is integral to the development of hypertension and ultimately the development of hypertensive heart disease. Although the results with renal sympathetic denervation so far have been encouraging, optimism has recently been tempered with the broadcast alert from Medtronic, the sponsor of Symplicity HTN-3, that the trial did

A case report of suicidal behavior related to subclinical hyperthyroidism.

Abnormalities in thyroid function are associated with many psychiatric symptoms. We present a report of a 15-year-old girl who was admitted to the psychiatry inpatient unit with symptoms of suicidal behavior, irritability, and impulsivity. One year previously, she had become more short-tempered, and had started to cut her wrists impulsively. Laboratory tests revealed subclinical hyperthyroidism. She was treated with anxiolytic and antithyroid drugs, and her suicidal ideation and irritability resolved. This case demonstrates that subclinical hyperthyroidism can be associated with suicidal behav

Invasive group A streptococcal infection in the Northern Territory, Australia: case report and review of the literature.

The increasing incidence of invasive group A streptococcus has been well documented in the temperate climates of North America, Europe and the United Kingdom. Studies also suggest that there are high rates of invasive group A streptococcus infection within the indigenous population of Northern Australia. This review article presents the case of infant Aboriginal twins with invasive group A streptococcal infection complicated by streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, highlighting both the severity and high transmissibility of invasive group A streptococcal disease. We review the epidemiology of gr

Bartonellosis in cats: a role in uveitis?

Bartonellosis has been widely studied in human and veterinary medicine over the past two decades. Despite this fact, it remains an enigmatic disease in many ways. The causative bacteria, Bartonella spp, are transmitted to cats by fleas and thus the prevalence in cat populations, particularly in temperate climates, is high. Most cats, whether infected naturally or experimentally, remain asymptomatic. Thus, correlating the presence of the organism to clinical disease, including uveitis, in cats has been difficult. This review summarizes what is known of the transmission and pathogenesis of Barto

West Nile viral encephalitis.

West Nile virus (WNV) has emerged in recent years in temperate regions of Europe and North America, presenting a threat to both public and animal health. The most serious manifestation of infection is fatal encephalitis in humans and horses, as well as mortality in certain domestic and wild birds. A recent development in the epizootiology of this mosquito-borne flavivirus was the occurrence of a severe outbreak in New York City and surrounding areas. During this outbreak, mortality was observed in humans, horses, a cat and numerous species of wild birds, particularly members of the family Corv

Psychiatric illness and behavioural problems in adults with learning disability and epilepsy.

We retrospectively collected data on the rate and type of psychiatric illness and behavioural problems on 143 adults with learning disability and epilepsy. 55% behavioural problems. 19% verbal aggression and temper tantrums, and 13% injurious behaviour. The overall rates of behavioural problems and different types of behaviours found in the current study cohort are similar to what was found before in learning disabled adults in general, as well as in epileptic and non-epileptic learning disabled adults. Psychiatric diagnosis was made in 12.6% combined diagnosis of schizophrenia, delusional dis

[Mycetoma of the hand. Apropos of 10 cases].

Mycetomas of the hand are a rare site of an uncommon disease, particularly in temperate climates. They are non-purulent inflammatory pseudotumours of mycotic origin. They are generally seen in Tropical Africa with a slow course progressing towards a phase of cutaneous fistula formation producing black, white or red grains depending on the fungus responsible. Ten cases are reported together with a review of the literature. Treatment must often be radical to prevent recurrence in the actinomycotic forms and this raises difficult problems of mutilating surgery of the hand for a benign and painles

A comparison of maternal and foetal folacin and cobalamin activities at parturition in relation to Plasmodium falciparum infection.

Folacin deficiency in malaria endemic areas is not reported other than in severely malnourished children. This is surprising in view of the high incidence in these areas of malaria in pregnancy, with its complications of prematurity and low birth weight, all of which can predispose to folacin deficiency. This paper reports results of folacin and cobalamin activities of blood samples collected from women at parturition and their newborns in a holoendemic area in West Kenya. Evidence is given that Plasmodium falciparum infection has little influence on cord plasma or red cell folacin activities.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae in skin lesions in Ugandan children.

Diphtheritic skin lesions are known to be relatively common in tropical as opposed to temperate climates, but the possible presence of Corynebacterium diphtheriae in skin lesions has not been investigated in East Africa, where classical diphtheria cases are rare. The authors therefore studied septic skin lesions and skin ulcers in 139 preschool children and schoolchildren in Uganda. A high percentage (up to 60%) of C. diphtheriae lesions was found, a majority of the isolations being of the mitis type. At the same time, low respiratory carrier rates for C. diphtheriae were found. The practical

Climate-associated variation in mosquito abundance and species composition in Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea, 2021-2024.

Mosquito communities in temperate-subtropical transition regions are highly sensitive to climatic variability. This study investigated temporal variation in mosquito abundance and species composition in Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea, from 2021 to 2024, and evaluated the associations between mosquito abundance and temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation. Female mosquitoes were collected from urban areas, bird sanctuaries, and a cattle shed. Mosquito pools from urban areas and bird sanctuaries were screened for medically important flaviviruses using real-time reverse transcription PC

Extreme Weather Events and Adolescent Contraception in Sub-Saharan Africa.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the associations between extreme weather events (drought and heavy rains) and adolescent family planning. The current analysis contributes to this evidence gap by examining the association between extreme weather events and adolescent modern contraception use. METHODS: We analyzed the 2011-2020 Demographic and Health Surveys in 22 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Drought and heavy rainfall were defined based on the extent to which annual rainfall deviated from the historical average. Logistic regression examined the association between extreme weather events (dr

Factors Associated With Performance Decrements in Elite Athletes During Exercise Under Hot and Humid Ambient Conditions.

PURPOSE: Exercise performance is compromised in hot and humid conditions compared to temperate circumstances. However, it remains unclear which factors predispose individuals to either small or large performance decrements. This study aimed to identify factors associated with performance decrements in elite athletes during exercise under hot and humid ambient conditions. METHODS: One hundred and six Dutch elite athletes performed a standardized incremental exercise test in a temperate condition (TEMP, ambient temperature 15.9 °C [1.2 °C], and relative humidity 55% [6%]) and hot-humid conditio

Causes and Seasonality of Upper Respiratory Infections in Adults in Lesotho (2021-2022) (CORIAL).

BACKGROUND: Upper respiratory tract infections cause morbidity and a high burden on healthcare systems worldwide, especially in low- and lower middle-income countries. Recent studies throughout Africa indicate seasonal patterns that deviate from those previously described in settings with temperate climates. Currently, there are no data available on pathogens causing upper respiratory infections and their seasonal patterns in Lesotho, Southern Africa. METHODS: This cross-sectional nested study enrolled a randomly selected sample of adults presenting at St. Charles Mission Hospital, Seboche, i

Ecology of Malaria Mortality: A Spatiotemporal Mapping Approach.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines the spatiotemporal ecology of probable malaria mortality in 19th-century southern Ontario to evaluate how settlement expansion, landscape transformation, and infrastructure development structured transmission risk in a temperate, settler-colonial context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Probable malaria-attributed deaths recorded in Ontario death certificates (1869-1900; n = 2683) were geocoded and analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Mortality locations were examined in relation to historical settlements, railways, and wetlands derived from 19th-century

Autochthonous dengue outbreak in Northern Italy, September 2024: epidemiological, microbiological, entomological investigation and public health response.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is an emerging public health threat in temperate regions of Europe where Aedes albopictus is established. In 2024 Italy experienced an unprecedented increase in autochthonous dengue transmission. In September 2024, a cluster of locally acquired dengue cases was detected in Cavezzo, Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy. METHODS: An outbreak investigation was initiated following confirmation of the first autochthonous dengue case on 17 September 2024. Enhanced surveillance was activated including retrospective case finding, targeted community screening, and strengthened laboratory

Vector competence of European Aedes mosquito species for Japanese encephalitis virus under fluctuating temperature conditions.

The Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus endemic to much of Asia and the Western Pacific, both temperate and tropical regions. Globalisation and the expansion of invasive mosquito species raise concerns about their potential establishment in Europe and other currently non-endemic regions. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the vector competence of European mosquitoes, particularly under the region's characteristic fluctuating temperatures. While Culex species are primary JEV vectors, the role of Aedes mosquitoes remains unclear. This study assessed the vect

Time-continuous analysis of muscle and cerebral oxygenation during repeated treadmill sprints under heat stress: a statistical parametric mapping study.

PURPOSE: We examined how heat exposure affects muscle and cerebral oxygenation kinetics using statistical parametric mapping (SPM) during repeated treadmill sprints. METHODS: Eleven recreationally active males performed three sets of five 5-s sprints with 25 s of recovery and 3 min between sets in hot (38 °C) and temperate (25 °C) conditions. Continuous measurements of muscle (vastus lateralis) and cerebral (prefrontal cortex) tissue oxygenation were obtained using near-infrared spectroscopy. One-way ANOVA SPM{F} statistics were applied to pooled sprint data, with each condition including 15

Ambient temperature and kidney function in primary care patients.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to high ambient temperatures is associated with a risk of acute kidney injury. However, evidence comes from emergency departments or extreme weather exposures. It is unclear whether temperature-related adverse kidney outcomes can also be detected at a community level in a temperate climate zone. METHODS: In a 9.5-year retrospective cohort study we correlated estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values of Swiss adult primary care patients from the FIRE cohort (Family medicine Research using Electronic medical records) with same-day maximum local ambient temperatur
