Effects of fatigue induced by repetitive movements and isometric tasks on reaction time.

PURPOSE: The understanding of fatigue of the human motor system is important in the fields of ergonomics, sport, rehabilitation and neurology. In order to understand the interactions between fatigue and reaction time, we evaluated the effects of two different fatiguing tasks on reaction time. METHODS: 83 healthy subjects were included in a case-control study with three arms where single and double choice reaction time tasks were performed before and after 2 min fatiguing task (an isometric task, a finger tapping task and at rest). RESULTS: After an isometric task, the right-fatigued hand was

Body size perception and weight control in youth: 9-year international trends from 24 countries.

OBJECTIVES: To examine 9-year trends and relationships regarding misperceptions of body size and dieting for weight loss among adolescents from 24 countries, and explore the influence of country-level overweight prevalence. METHODS: Sociodemographic characteristics, body size perception and dieting for weight loss were assessed in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey conducted in 24 countries cross-sectionally at three time points (2001/2002, 2005/2006 and 2009/2010). Logistic regression models examined change over time in overestimation of body size in non-overweight adolescen

[Psychological perception of risk, infections and catastrophes. The greatest danger is human nature].

Risk perception is due to a subjective evaluation of reality and depends on a number of factors such as: individual coherence and flexibility, the set of social values and rules that contributed to the definition of the individuals' interior world - this does not always make proper risk perception possible. Even though the way common people set-up their own judgment is based on their own interpretation tracks, surely different from expert criteria, we cannot label their approach as irrational. Over time, through an evolutionary process, people have decided what is safe and what is dangerous; t

Duration Selectivity in Right Parietal Cortex Reflects the Subjective Experience of Time.

The perception of duration in the subsecond range has been hypothesized to be mediated by the population response of duration-sensitive unit … sed by various contextual factors. Here we used fMRI to examine the neural correlates of subjective time perception in human participants. To manipulate perceived duration while holding physical duration constant, we used an adaptation method, in which, before judging the duration of a test stimulus, the participants were exposed to a train of adapting stimuli of …

Selective Attention Dynamically Modulates the Hierarchical Order of Perceptual and Conceptual Representations.

Mounting evidence suggests that information processing in the visual hierarchy involves a progression from low-level perceptual to high-level conceptual features during visual perception, and a reverse traversal during memory retrieval. However, the nature of this processing hierarchy and its modulation by selective attention remain unclear. By using the drift-diffusion model, we found that slower reaction times for conceptual versus perceptual tasks were primarily due to differences in decision boundaries and nondecision times, which were not compensated by faster evidence accumulation for co

Relationships between Depression, Fear of Childbirth, and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms among Pregnant Women under the COVID-19 Pandemic in Japan.

Little is known about the causality of antenatal depression (AND). We focused on the causal relationships between AND, fear of childbirth (FOC), and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. We also examined whether the perceived threat of COVID-19 is associated with AND. Participants were recruited for an Internet survey conducted in December 2020. A total of 245 pregnant women completed the online survey at 12 to 15 weeks' gestational age (Time 1) and approximately 10 weeks later (Time 2). AND was estimated using the first two diagnostic items of Major Depres

Evaluation of the pathogenesis of flatulence and abdominal cramps in patients with lactose malabsorption.

Aim of this study was to assess whether the interindividual differences in the development of flatulence and cramps in patients with lactose malabsorption are due to the quantity of malabsorbed lactose or gas accumulation, or if accelerated intestinal transit or increased perception of gas might play a role. Hydrogen breath tests were performed in 43 patients with lactose malabsorption after ingestion of 50 g lactose and, on a separate day, 25 g lactulose. The unabsorbed amount of lactose, small bowel transit time and colonic hydrogen accumulation were assessed in patients who did and did not

Semantic Content of Visual Consequent Stimuli Modulates Audiovisual Learning in Migraine.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired equivalence learning relies on associating different antecedent stimuli with shared outcomes and is mediated by the basal ganglia and hippocampus. Audiovisual associative learning benefits from multisensory integration, which may be disrupted in migraine. Previous studies indicated altered performance in such learning paradigms. This study investigated whether the semantic content of consequent visual stimuli influence audiovisual associative equivalence learning in adult migraine patients. METHODS: 30 adult migraine patients completed two audiovisual learning tests: th

Human Touch Receptors Are Sensitive to Spatial Details on the Scale of Single Fingerprint Ridges.

Fast-adapting type 1 (FA-1) and slowly-adapting type 1 (SA-1) first-order tactile neurons provide detailed spatiotemporal tactile information when we touch objects with fingertips. The distal axon of these neuron types branches in the skin and innervates many receptor organs associated with fingerprint ridges (Meissner corpuscles and Merkel cell neurite complexes, respectively), resulting in heterogeneous receptive fields whose sensitivity topography includes many highly sensitive zones or "subfields." In experiments on humans of both sexes, using raised dots that tangentially scanned the rece

A Cortico-Collicular Amplification Mechanism for Gap Detection.

Auditory cortex (AC) is necessary for the detection of brief gaps in ongoing sounds, but not for the detection of longer gaps or other stimuli such as tones or noise. It remains unclear why this is so, and what is special about brief gaps in particular. Here, we used both optogenetic suppression and conventional lesions to show that the cortical dependence of brief gap detection hinges specifically on gap termination. We then identified a cortico-collicular gap detection circuit that amplifies cortical gap termination responses before projecting to inferior colliculus (IC) to impact behavior.

The Attentional Fields of Visual Search in Simultanagnosia and Healthy Individuals: How Object and Space Attention Interact.

Simultanagnosia is a deficit in which patients are unable to perceive multiple objects simultaneously. To date, it remains disputed whether this deficit results from disrupted object or space perception. We asked both healthy participants as well as a patient with simultanagnosia to perform different visual search tasks of variable difficulty. We also modulated the number of objects (target and distracters) presented. For healthy participants, we found that each visual search task was performed with a specific "attentional field" depending on the difficulty of visual object processing but not

Remote temporal camouflage: contextual flicker disrupts perceived visual temporal order.

Correctly perceiving the temporal order of events is essential to many tasks. Despite this, the factors constraining our ability to make timing judgments remain largely unspecified. Here we present a new phenomenon demonstrating that perceived timing of visual events may be profoundly impaired by the mere presence of irrelevant events elsewhere in the visual field. Human observers saw two abrupt luminance events presented across a range of onset asynchronies. Temporal order judgment (TOJ) just noticeable differences (JNDs) provided a behavioural index of temporal precision. When target events

Combining findings from gaze and electroencephalography recordings to study timing in a visual tracking task.

Electroencephalography (EEG) and gaze data have traditionally been separated in neurocognitive studies because of the artefacts that even small controlled eye movements produce. Study of gaze control in a visual tracking task provides information about an individual's prospective control. By including gaze events in the EEG analysis, we studied prospective control and its neural correlates during deceleration in a visual tracking task. Adult participants followed with their gaze a small car moving horizontally on a large screen, where the final approach of the car was temporarily occluded, and

Effect of benzodiazepines on structural and conceptual/lexical priming.

RATIONALE: Impaired perceptual priming, as assessed by naming reaction times and accuracy, for briefly presented contour-deleted pictures under lorazepam has been documented in several studies but whether the nature of this impairment is visual versus conceptual/lexical is not clear. We used a previously developed paradigm to examine whether lorazepam affects visual processes involved in the coding of contour information or conceptual/lexical representations. METHOD: Three groups were tested (lorazepam, diazepam and placebo). In the study phase, participants named line drawings, presented for

Auditory temporal integration in the normal-hearing and hearing-impaired cat.

Temporal integration functions obtained from human subjects with sensorineural hearing loss have shallower slopes than the functions obtained from normal-hearing subjects. The present investigation was designed to explore this relation in animals in order to compare normal-hearing cats and humans. Auditory temporal integration functions were measured for five cats before and after they were exposed to a 2-kHz tone at 110 dB SPL for 48 h. To measure the temporal integration functions, ten stimuli were used that had overall durations from 8.32 to 275 ms and that were configured either as single

Temporal quantization deteriorates the discrimination of interaural time differences.

Cochlear implants (CIs) often replace acoustic temporal fine structure by a fixed-rate pulse train. If the pulse timing is arbitrary (that is, not based on the phase information of the acoustic signal), temporal information is quantized by the pulse period. This temporal quantization is probably imperceptible with current clinical devices. However, it could result in large temporal jitter for strategies that aim to improve bilateral and bimodal CI users' perception of interaural time differences (ITDs), such as envelope enhancement. In an experiment with 16 normal-hearing listeners, it is show
