Macular thickness reduction in eyes with unilateral optic atrophy detected with optical coherence tomography.

AIMS: To assess the changes in macular and peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes with unilateral optic atrophy and to evaluate the relationship between retinal thickness and visual function. METHODS: Enrolled were 22 patients with unilateral optic atrophy. Macular thickness at the divided nine areas and peripapillary RNFL thickness in quadrantic sections were measured by optical coherence tomography. Thickness values in the affected eyes were compared with those in the contralateral unaffected eyes. The correlation of foveal thickness with best-corrected visual acui

Optical Coherence Tomography of the Retinal Ganglion Cell Complex in Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy and Dominant Optic Atrophy.

Background: Mitochondrial optic neuropathies such as Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) and Dominant Optic Atrophy (DOA) have been shown to produce an optic neuropathy secondary to retinal ganglion cell loss with thinning of the retinal ganglion cell complex (RGCC). Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis assessing the thicknesses of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) along with the macular retinal ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (RGC-IPL) using optical coherence tomography (OCT). We compared these changes among acute and chronic LHON, DOA, and normal health

Macular microvascular and structural changes on optical coherence tomography angiography in atypical optic neuritis.

BACKGROUND: Atypical optic neuritis, consisting of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD), has a very similar presentation but different prognostic implications and long-term management strategies. Vascular and metabolic factors are being thought to play a role in such autoimmune neuro-inflammatory disorders, apart from the obvious immune mediated damage. With the advent of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), it is easy to pick up on these subclinical macular microvascular and structural changes. AIM: To stu

Acute and chronic optical coherence tomography findings in partial optic nerve head avulsion.

We present a case of partial optic nerve head (ONH) avulsion in a 15-year-old boy evaluated with optical coherence tomography (OCT) from 2 weeks to 15 months after acute injury. Distinct findings on OCT in the acute setting correlated with the diagnosis and with additional testing, including fundus photography, Humphrey visual fields, and clinical examination. OCT findings became less pronounced in the chronic setting. Our case highlights that OCT may be valuable in the acute setting for evaluating ONH avulsion in certain patients; however, OCT findings are less distinct in the chronic setting

Contouring in the optic plane improves the accuracy of computed tomography-based segmentation of the optic pathway.

Canine optic pathway structures are often contoured on CT images, despite the difficulty of visualizing the optic pathway with CT using standard planes. The purpose of this prospective, analytical, diagnostic accuracy study was to examine the accuracy of optic pathway contouring by veterinary radiation oncologists (ROs) before and after training on optic plane contouring. Optic pathway contours used as the gold standard for comparison were created based on expert consensus from registered CT and MRI for eight dogs. Twenty-one ROs contoured the optic pathway on CT using their preferred method,

Automatic Segmentation of the Optic Nerve Head Region in Optical Coherence Tomography: A Methodological Review.

The optic nerve head (ONH) represents the intraocular section of the optic nerve, which is prone to damage by intraocular pressure (IOP). The advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has enabled the evaluation of novel ONH parameters, namely the depth and curvature of the lamina cribrosa (LC). Together with the Bruch's membrane minimum-rim-width (BMO-MRW), these seem to be promising ONH parameters for diagnosis and monitoring of retinal diseases such as glaucoma. Nonetheless, these OCT derived biomarkers are mostly extracted through manual segmentation, which is time-consuming and prone to

Optical coherence tomography as a useful adjunct in the early detection of meningioma with optic nerve compression.

A 48-year-old woman presented with persistent clouding vision in her lower field in the right eye for 5 months. A small retinal hemorrhage was initially reported. Her visual acuity was 20/30 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left, with normal color vision and pupil response. Fundus examination did not reveal any retinal hemorrhage. Although optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed normal macula and retinal nerve fiber layers in both eyes, asymmetric thinning of the ganglion cell inner plexiform layer was found in the superior macula of the right eye in ganglion cell analysis (GCA). Visual fie

A Handheld Fiber-Optic Probe to Enable Optical Coherence Tomography of Oral Soft Tissue.

This study presents a highly miniaturized, handheld probe developed for rapid assessment of soft tissue using optical coherencetomography (OCT). OCT is a non-invasive optical technology capable of visualizing the sub-surface structural changes that occur in soft tissue disease such as oral lichen planus. However, usage of OCT in the oral cavity has been limited, as the requirements for high-quality optical scanning have often resulted in probes that are heavy, unwieldy and clinically impractical. In this paper, we present a novel probe that combines an all-fiber optical design with a light-wei
