The effects of periradicular inflamation and infection on a primary tooth and permanent successor.

Primary teeth and the permanent successors must be understood as interdependent units, where each one of them interacts with and depends on each other. Pulpal inflammation/infection of a primary tooth and the spread of this condition over the periradicular tissues can lead to alterations in the dental germ of the permanent successor and to the surrounding structures if no therapy is done, i.e. endodontics or extraction. This work will present cases of permanent teeth that showed alteration in eruption and / or in development, as a consequence of inflammation / infection of the preceding primar

Spaced dentition--open, close or redistribute?

A spaced dentition can be due to various reasons such as hypodontia, tooth size discrepancy and impeded eruption. The dilemma for clinicians is whether to close, open or redistribute space. Closing space by orthodontics eliminates the need for prosthetic rehabilitation but it might compromise aesthetics and function. On the other hand, opening space is more complex and requires long-term maintenance. Based on these drawbacks, a careful occlusal analysis and an individualized treatment plan are mandatory for achieving the best result. The prognosis for closing space and substituting congenitall

[Single tooth replacement with an implant. Possibilities and limitations].

Implant treatment in case of a single missing tooth can potentially lead to a well functioning and aesthetically pleasing single crown on an implant. However, in order to achieve an optimal treatment result, a long road has to be travelled since usually resorption defects have to be repaired and soft tissue corrections are frequently necessary. This paper provides information regarding commonly observed situations and their consequences for the prognosis of implant treatment. It is concluded that a single tooth implant can be an elegant solution, though not an easy one. It requires a high degr

The human incisal suture and premaxillary area studied on archaeologic material.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent of the incisal suture, the size of the premaxillary area, and the developmental status of the dentition. Sixty-three medieval crania were examined: 30 from children and 33 from adults, including 5 cases with tooth deviations. All crania were photographed at a 1:1 scale. From the photographs the size of the premaxilla and the length of the incisal suture were measured. In addition, the spatial conditions in the anterior region were recorded. The study showed that the main closure of the suture takes place shortly after the crowns of the pe

An insight into internal resorption.

Internal resorption, a rare phenomenon, has been a quandary from the standpoints of both its diagnosis and treatment. It is usually asymptomatic and discovered by chance on routine radiographic examinations or by a classic clinical sign, "pink spot" in the crown. This paper emphasizes the etiology and pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in internal root resorption. Prognosis is good for smaller lesions; however, for those with extensive resorption associated with perforation the tooth structure is greatly weakened and the prognosis remains poor.

Finite element analysis of heat generation from different light-polymerization sources during cementation of all-ceramic crowns.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Exothermic composite resin chemical reactions and visible light generators can produce heat during a restorative polymerization process. These thermal changes in restored teeth may cause pain and irreversible pulpitis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the temperature distribution and heat flow patterns of a crowned mandibular second premolar tooth model using 3 different light-polymerization technologies and a finite element technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 2-dimensional finite element model was used to simulate a clinical condition. Heat flow and the

A Non-Surgical Endodontic Treatment for a Dens in Dente Type II in a Maxillary Lateral Incisor with Chronic Apical Periodontitis: A Case Report.

Dens in dente is a rare structural abnormality arising during tooth development. It is also called dens invaginatus or dilated odontoma, which develops following inward folding (invagination) of the enamel organ into the dental papilla. Maxillary lateral incisors are the most frequently affected teeth. Dens in dente often leads to pulp necrosis and development of a periapical lesion. Also, impacted teeth are one of the reasons for development of odontogenic cysts and tumors. A dentigerous cyst, classified as an odontogenic cyst, develops around the crown of an unerupted tooth. These cysts most

Cholesterol Granuloma in the Maxillary Sinus: A Rare Presentation Associated With an Odontogenic Cyst.

Cholesterol granuloma is a histopathological finding characterized by a mass of connective tissue and granulation tissue. It is primarily observed in the middle ear, mastoid process, or paranasal sinuses, with rare occurrences in the dental odontogenic region. A dentigerous cyst encloses the crown of an unerupted tooth by expanding its follicle and attaches to the neck of the tooth. Here, we report a 63-year-old female who presented to the dental clinic complaining of an ill-fitted denture. A panoramic radiograph showed a well-defined radiolucent lesion in the upper left maxillary sinus with a

Surgical extrusion: a simplified esthetic method of treating non-restorable teeth. Rationale and case report.

The restoration of teeth that have been compromised by loss of crown and radicular structure due to caries, fractures, root resorption or iatrogenic lesions could result in the violation of the biologic width, with consequent gingival inflammation, loss of attachment, and alveolar bone loss. It is essential in these cases to obtain an adequate enough portion of the tooth structure to allow for a restoration that respects the biologic width. This can be achieved using a procedure that allows for the extrusion of the root in a single step, thereby shifting the compromised site from subgingival t

Witkop tooth and nail syndrome: a report of three cases in a family.

Witkop tooth and nail syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant ectodermal dysplasia manifested by hypodontia and nail dysplasia. Tooth shape may vary, and conical and narrow crowns are common. Mandibular incisors, second molars, and maxillary canines are the most frequently missing teeth. Nail dysplasia affects the fingernails and especially the toenails and is often more severe in childhood. Nails may be spoon-shaped, ridged, slow-growing, and easily broken. We examined an Eastern Mediterranean family in which three siblings (two girls, one boy) had this syndrome. The severity of finger and toen

An impacted malformed primary maxillary central incisor diagnosed as a compound odontoma.

An odontoma is usually found in the surrounding area of the unerupted permanent tooth bud and rarely adjacent to the primary central incisor This report presents a case of an unerupted malformed primary central incisor, histologically diagnosed as a compound odontoma. A 5.5 year-old healthy boy presented with an unerupted maxillary left primary central incisor and mild gingival buccal swelling. No history of traumatic injury was recorded. Radiological examination revealed a tooth-like mass with a partially developed root and a malformed crown in the area of the left primary central incisor Del

Dental variation among populations. An anthropologic view.

There is considerable variation between and within populations with regard to tooth size, age of eruption, congenitally missing teeth, and crown morphology. These differences are a reflection of the ongoing process of evolution. The genetic basis for this variation is best explained by a polygenic model of inheritance. Even though tooth morpholoyg and agenesis have discontinuous distributions - usually evidence of single gene transmission - they are also polygenic traits and are examples of "quasi-continuous" characteristics. These are traits which exhibit phenotypic discontinuity at the end o

Wear resistance and fracture strength of BioFlx, zirconia and stainless steel crowns for primary molars after thermomechanical aging: an in vitro comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Full-coverage restorations are often required for primary molars with extensive carious destruction. Stainless steel crowns remain the long-standing reference, while prefabricated zirconia and polymer-based crowns have become tooth-colored alternatives. Direct comparisons under a single thermomechanical protocol, with separate wear and fracture cohorts, remain limited. This in vitro study quantified post-aging occlusal wear and compressive fracture load in four prefabricated crown systems for mandibular second primary molars. METHODS: Eighty crowns were tested, with 10 specimens p

Trauma-induced dentigerous cyst involving an inverted impacted mesiodens: case report.

There have been only a small number of studies on the association of dentigerous cysts with supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this article was to report the case of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted inverted mesiodens that developed secondary to trauma to its predecessor, a non-vital permanent maxillary central incisor. As a consequence of trauma, the central incisor's root development was prematurely arrested and the open apex lay close to the follicle of the underlying inverted mesiodens. The negligent attitude of both the child and parent in seeking dental treatment was a con

The association of external cervical resorption with modern internal bleaching protocols: what is the current evidence?

Internal bleaching is an effective and minimally invasive way of bleaching non-vital teeth. A commonly cited risk associated with it is external cervical resorption (ECR), which is a potentially significant complication that could result in loss of the tooth. This is an important point of discussion with a patient during the consent process. Legally, patients are required to be made aware of material risks to which they would be likely to attach significance, such as the loss of a tooth. The risk of ECR is therefore a key component in the patient's decision-making process as they weigh it agai

Three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis of tooth shape in hypodontia: II size variation.

The study aimed to evaluate differences in tooth size between patients with hypodontia and those with normal complement of permanent teeth using three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis. The number of anatomical landmarks was recorded on the clinical crown of the permanent teeth on three-dimensional scanned study models of hypodontia and in control subjects. The study sample comprised 120 patients with hypodontia (mild, moderate, severe) and 40 controls matched for age and sex. Tooth size differences were tested statistically using multivariate statistics. Size variation was for the m

Direct Resin Composite Restoration of Maxillary Central Incisors with Fractured Tooth Fragment Reattachment: Case Report.

This article presents a clinical protocol to reconstruct two accidentally damaged maxillary central incisors using composite resin material and a fractured tooth component. A patient was referred to the clinic with fracture of the two maxillary central incisors. Clinical examination revealed that both teeth were fractured in the middle third of the crown and that the fractures involved enamel and dentin with no pulp exposure. The patient had also suffered a lower lip laceration. When the lip was evaluated, a fractured fragment of the maxillary right central incisor was found inside the wound.

A case report of reattachment of fractured root fragment and resin-composite reinforcement in a compromised endodontically treated root.

The composite reinforcement technique has been used clinically to salvage damaged root-filled teeth compromised by caries, trauma, developmental abnormalities, internal resorption and iatrogenic causes. This clinical case report describes the use of the technique to reattach a fractured fragment in a compromised endodontically treated root besides reinforcing it for continued function in the mouth. Factors of clinical importance related to this additional application; including reattachment of tooth fragments, post crown retention, coronal microleakage and fracture resistance and strength, are
