Loss of bone is a characteristic feature of periodontitis and in later life assumes increasing importance as a cause of tooth morbidity and tooth loss. The rate, pattern and form of bone loss varies between individuals, from tooth to tooth and from tooth surface to tooth surface. This variation may be attributed to specific organisms or groups of organisms in subgingival plaque, factors that enhance plaque retention or factors that modify the course or nature of the disease. Certain high risk individuals should be identified at an early stage of the disease process. Plaque is the sole cause of

Chronic periodontitis is one of the most frequent and severe diseases involving the tooth. Untreated, they can lead to tooth loss. Our study involved 67 patients with chronic marginal periodontitis who underwent tooth extraction, of which 29 had moderate periodontal lesions and 38 severe periodontal lesions. The microscopic study of the dental pulp revealed significant changes in all patients. In patients with moderate periodontitis the pulp tissue was found to be the site of an enhanced process of collagenous fibrosis associated with a moderate inflammatory infiltrate, dystrophic mineralizati

Atopic dermatitis and abnormalities in tooth development (including hypomineralization, hypodontia and microdontia) have been observed to co-occur in some patients. A common pathogenesis pathway that involves genes and protein interactions has been hypothesized. This review aims to first provide a description of the key gene mutations and signaling pathways associated with atopic dermatitis and tooth agenesis (i.e., the absence of teeth due to developmental failure) and identify the possible association between the two diseases. Second, utilizing a list of genes most commonly associated with t

BACKGROUND: Autogenous tooth transplantation is a reliable method for repairing missing teeth. Although it recently became a recognized and feasible treatment method in dentistry, the long-term efficacy of root canal therapy (RCT) has not been well confirmed. This study is aimed at determining whether RCT has a good effect on the success rate of teeth with complete roots in autogenous tooth transplantation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the Korea University Guro Hospital. Data of patients who underwent autogenous tooth transplantation within 9 years were collected. We select

UNLABELLED: The presence of a tooth in the fracture line constitutes a specific problem in mandibular fractures. Therefore, our objective was to characterize the approach to teeth in the fracture line used in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Plovdiv, by retrospectively investigating the association between various preoperative factors and the decision to extract or preserve the tooth.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The following variables were studied based on data from available hospital records: 1) gender and age of patients; 2) local preoperative infections; 3) time from trauma to treatment

INTRODUCTION: Associations between cardiometabolic comorbidities and self-reported oral health (OH) are often underexplored in large biobank datasets. While these associations are unaffected by dental care access, they could be mediated by immune responses and inflammation.
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the associations between cardiometabolic comorbidities and self-reported OH, periodontitis, and tooth loss using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes in participants from the U.S. Veterans Affairs Million Veteran Program (MVP), adjusting for immune and inflammatory covari

BACKGROUND: Previous studies concerning tooth loss and frailty risk primarily employed the number of teeth to categorize the extent of tooth loss. However, tooth loss is a dynamic process. Hence, this study aimed to identify the dynamic trajectories of tooth loss and analyze the relationship between tooth loss trajectories and frailty risk.
METHODS: This analysis included 3355 participants enrolled in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The number of teeth and the frailty index were evaluated in 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2018, and the tooth loss trajectories were establishe

INTRODUCTION: Pulp stones are radiopaque calcified masses located within the coronal or radicular pulp tissue. They are typically asymptomatic and detected incidentally on radiographic examination. Global prevalence estimates vary widely, and methodological inconsistencies across studies hinder a comprehensive understanding of their epidemiology. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to answer the following question: "What is the global prevalence of pulp stones, and what factors are associated with their occurrence?" Aim: To systematically review and synthesize the evidence on the global pr

The oral microbiome, comprising bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa, is essential for maintaining both oral and systemic health. This complex ecosystem includes over 700 bacterial species, such as Streptococcus mutans, which contributes to dental caries through acid production that demineralizes tooth enamel. Fungi like Candida and pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis are also significant, as they can lead to periodontal diseases through inflammation and destruction of tooth-supporting structures. Dysbiosis, or microbial imbalance, is a key factor in the development of these oral dise

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare but detrimental intraoral lesion that predominantly occurs in patients with long-term use of antiresorptive agents, such as bisphosphonate and denosumab, a human anti-receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) monoclonal antibody (Ab). Surgical intervention, such as tooth extraction, is a known risk factor for MRONJ, which is often performed to eliminate preexiting pathologic inflammatory conditions, such as periodontal diseases. Nonetheless, it remains unknown whether pre-existing periodontal disease condition exacerbates, or remov

Proposed in the early 20th century, the focal infection theory hypothesizes that teeth with dental caries, endodontic-periapical/periodontal diseases, plus impacted teeth and residual roots, might act as infection foci, inducing pathologies in distant organs including respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and brain, etc. During the prevalence of this theory, tooth extraction was well received as a key adjuvant therapy for systemic diseases, profoundly influencing paradigms of dentistry and clinical medicine. In the mid-20th century, advances in evidence-based medicine and diagnostic/therap

BACKGROUND: Oral hygiene maintenance is crucial for prevention of various oral diseases. Oral hygiene practices across the country vary largely and people in peri-urban and rural areas use traditional methods of oral hygiene like powders, bark, oil and salt etc. Their effect on oral soft and hard tissues need to be studied to understand their beneficial and/ or harmful effects on maintenance of oral hygiene and prevention or causation of oral diseases.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the plaque-cleaning efficacy, gingival bleeding, recession and tooth wear with different traditional or

Systematic study of dental attributes yields insights regarding diet and subsistence that cannot be gained from the archaeological record alone. This analysis documents occlusal tooth wear, tooth crown dimensions and dental pathology of an expanded dental sample from Harappa (2550-2030cal BC; Pakistan). New floral and faunal evidence of subsistence indicates a mix of agriculture and pastoralism that can be integrated with evidence of dental attributes and disease to reveal the impact of Harappan diet on oral health. An enlarged dental sample (58 specimens, 910 teeth) from mature phase Harappa

Tooth loss extends beyond oral health concerns, impacting overall well-being and quality of life. It is a global issue, with approximately 7% of individuals aged 20 years or older affected. Research reveals associations between tooth loss and cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, and peripheral arterial disease, attributed mainly to chronic inflammation and altered dietary habits. However, tooth loss has also been associated with cognitive decline, depression, and certain cancers, including lung, head and neck, pancreatic, and esophageal, suggesting the involvement
