BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Bile acids (BAs) aid intestinal fat absorption and exert systemic actions by receptor-mediated signaling. BA receptors … differed considerably between sexes. Three-week old male Cyp2c70-/- mice showed high plasma BAs and transaminases, which spontaneously decreased thereafter to near-normal levels. Only mild ductular reactions were observed in male Cyp2c70-/- mice up to 8 months of age. In female Cyp2c70-/- mice, plasma BAs and transaminases remained substantially elevated with a …

RESULTS: Grade 1 elevation of the transaminases was only observed in 6 patients; no cases of severe hypertransaminasemia were observed. None of the patients with elevation of the transaminases at baseline developed problems during treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Ustekinumab-related liver injury is uncom …

BACKGROUND: Obstetric cholestasis has been associated with an increased risk of preterm delivery, intrapartum meconium, foetal distress and intrauterine foetal death. There is no consensus about the frequency of each of these complications or about the prognostic value of serum bile acids and transaminase levels. Bile acids levels above 40pml/L have been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of adverse perinatal outcomes in single pregnancies with cholestasis of pregnancy and assess the association between levels of bile acids and transaminases in …

Phosphoglucomutase 1 (PGM1, EC 5.4.2.2) plays a critical role in glucose homeostasis and is also essential for protein N-glycosylation. The main clinical manifestations of PGM1 deficiency (MIM 614921) reported in 19 patients from different ethnic backgrounds include the following: cleft uvula/palate, Pierre Robin sequence, muscle weakness, dilated cardiomyopathy, growth retardation, elevated serum transaminases, hypoglycemia, and various endocrine abnormalities. We report the variable clinical picture of seven patients with PGM1 deficiency from a consanguineous family. Medical records of the p…

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex disorder involving severe psychological manifestations and multiple organ damage, including liver dysfunction. The primary aim of this study consisted in assessing plasma levels of vitamin B12 and folates with respect to liver function enzymes considering the liver-storage properties of this vitamin.
METHOD: We recruited 70 restrictive type AN adolescents and the severity of psychopathological traits was assessed using EDI-3 scale. Plasma levels of vitamin B12 , folates, transaminases (AST, ALT), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), alkaline phosp…

Since there is still debate about the ability of the aged liver to regenerate, we compared some aspects of this response in young, adult and old rodents. 2, 6, 12 and 19-month-old rats were intraperitoneally injected with CCl(4) (3mg/kg) or left untreated (CT) and killed either 2h (group A) or 24h (group B) after intoxication. Liver injury was checked histologically and by assaying transaminases. mRNA levels of albumin (Alb), c-fos, c-myc, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), transforming growth factor (TGF)-alpha and TGF-beta1 were also analyzed. Heat shock protein (HSP)70 gene expression was eval…

Hepatitis C is becoming the main cause of cirrhosis and primary liver carcinoma. Infection by hepatitis C virus (HCV) generally induces an asymptomatic acute hepatitis. HCV infection becomes chronic in about 80% of cases. In a minority of the subjects, chronic HCV infection is asymptomatic with persistent viremia and normal liver tests. These asymptomatic subjects have minimal liver histologic lesions and a good prognosis. In a majority of the subjects, chronic HCV infection is associated with chronic hepatitis with increased serum transaminases levels. Among the patients with chronic hepatiti…

BACKGROUND: Liver injury manifesting as hepatic enzyme abnormalities, has been occasionally identified to be a feature of primary or secondary Addison's disease, an uncommon endocrine disease characterized by adrenal insufficiency. There have been no more than 30 reported cases of liver injury explicitly attributed to Addison's disease. Liver injury resulting from adrenal insufficiency due to glucocorticoid withdrawal is exceptionally rarer.
CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old man presented with fatigue and mildly elevated transaminases. Laboratory investigations and imaging studies excluded common e…

Background and aims Dengue fever can progress to severe disease with hepatic dysfunction and multiorgan involvement. Early identification of markers is essential for timely intervention. This study evaluated transaminitis and gallbladder wall thickness (GBWT) as markers of severe dengue in critically ill patients. Materials and methods A retrospective observational study was conducted on 120 serologically confirmed dengue patients admitted to a tertiary ICU between July and November 2023. Patients were categorized according to the WHO 2009 criteria into dengue with warning signs and severe den

BACKGROUND: Cannabidiol (CBD) is the principal non-hallucinogenic compound of Cannabis plants with high clinical interest because CBD has been described as having anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anticonvulsant properties. CBD is considered a multitarget compound as it can interact with a wide range of targets, explaining their multiplicity of effects. Some clinical studies have indicated certain side effects of CBD, including somnolence, anemia and diarrhea, while the elevation of transaminases is considered as an exclusion criterion from the trial. Since the red blood cells (RBCs) are a sour…

Mutations that cause neurological phenotypes are highly informative with regard to mechanisms governing human brain function and disease. We report autosomal recessive mutations in the enzyme glutamate pyruvate transaminase 2 (GPT2) in large kindreds initially ascertained for intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). GPT2 [also known as alanine transaminase 2 (ALT2)] is one of two related transaminases that catalyze the reversible addition of an amino group from glutamate to pyruvate, yielding alanine and α-ketoglutarate. In addition to IDD, all affected individuals show postnatal micro…

OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection on clinically significant transaminase elevation during short-course anti-tuberculosis treatment.
DESIGN: Retrospective observation study.
RESULTS: During standard anti-tuberculosis treatment of 295 patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and normal baseline liver biochemical tests, 25 (8.5%) developed hepatitis and had a significantly higher mortality rate (32% vs. 7%, OR 6.22, 95%CI 2.0-17.6, P = 0.001). BACKGROUND: The risk of drug-induced hepatotoxicity (DIH) during treatment for tuberculosis (TB) in patients who are seropositive for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) is not clear. We evaluated whether HCV-seropositive patients are at a higher risk of DIH than control subjects during treatment for TB with standard short-course regimens.
METHODS: Fifty-four HCV-seropositive patients with newly diagnosed active TB who were treated with isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, and/or pyrazinamide were included in the study population. Ninety-seven HCV-seronegative patients were selected as control subjects.
