Neurosyphilis is a central nervous system infection caused by Treponema pallidum that imitates various neurological and mental disorders. Using TPHA instead of VDRL for syphilis blood-screening since 1995 showed an important increase of positive blood donors in Martinique. Syphilis, a chronic bacterial infection caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, remains a public health concern worldwide. Syphilis control is largely dependent upon early identification and prompt treatment. The diagnosis of syphilis is mainly based on laboratory tests, especially serology and dark-field microscopy. In recent years, recombinant Treponema pallidum antigen-based rapid tests, polymerase chain reaction, and immunoglobulin M antibody detection have also shown certain sensitivities and specificities for syphilitic patients at different stages.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum and divided into three stages according to the duration of the disease: primary, secondary and tertiary. Secondary syphilis has diverse clinical presentations, such as papular-nodular lesions. This presentation is rare, with 15 cases reported in the literature over the past 20 years. We report a case of secondary syphilis with papular-nodular lesions in a healthy 63-year-old patient, who has presented treponema in immunohistochemical examination of the skin lesions.

Morphology, physiology, and DNA nucleotide composition of Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia, Treponema, and Leptospira were compared. Morphologically, Lyme disease spirochetes resemble Borrelia. The Chembio DPP (Dual Path Platform) Syphilis Screen & Confirm kit (https://chembio.com) is a rapid serologic test that can be used to diagnose yaws. We evaluated its capacity to detect patients with ulcers that tested PCR positive for Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue. DPP detected 84% of ulcers that were positive by PCR.
