Otitis interna was diagnosed in five 9-to-21-day-old turkey poults with clinical signs of paralysis, opisthotonus, torticollis, blindness, and increased mortality. Gross and microscopic lesions in the poults included omphalitis, typhlitis, hepatitis, meningoencephalitis, ophthalmitis, neuritis and ganglionitis of the vestibulocochlear nerve, and otitis interna. Salmonella enterica arizonae was isolated from the brains, eyes, intestines, yolk sacs, and livers of poults. Birds with otitis interna also had meningoencephalitis. We conducted a case-control study to assess risk factors for typhoid fever in Diyarbakir, Turkey, a region where transmission of Salmonella typhi is endemic. Seroprevalence of five different Leptospira interrogans serovars, Toxoplasma gondii and Leishmania infantum in stray dogs in Ankara was investigated. A total of 116 dog sera collected from apparently healthy stray dogs were tested for L. interrogans serovars by microscopic agglutination test (MAT), for T. gondii antibodies by Sabin-Feldman dye test (SFDT), and for L. infantum antibodies by indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT). Leptospirosis is an acute generalized infectious disease, caused by spirochaetes, Leptospira interrogans. Intervals V and VI of Yq11.23 regions contain responsible genes for spermatogenesis, and are named as "azoospermia factor locus" (AZF). Deletions in these genes are thought to be pathogenetically involved in some cases of male infertility associated with azoospermia or oligozoospermia. A 52-year-old woman presented several months after returning from a visit to Turkey with stomach-ache and fever. Laboratory results showed leucocytosis with marked eosinophilia. Furthermore, serum liver enzyme activities were slightly elevated. A CT scan of the abdomen showed several spots which, on a later scan, had migrated. Serologic tests confirmed the clinical diagnosis of fascioliasis. The patient was successfully treated with triclabendazole. Infection presumably occurred after eating watercress which the patient had bought on a market in Turkey.

Sporotrichosis is rare in Turkey. We report a 48-year-old man who had subcutaneous sporotrichosis caused by Sporothrix schenckii that was successfully treated with short-term itraconazole and potassium iodide. The isolate was susceptible to itraconazole also in vitro. Short-term itraconazole and potassium iodide should be agents of choice for treatment of subcutaneous sporotrichosis. However, treatment is controversial both in choice of agent used and in duration of therapy.

Etiology of mental retardation is diverse. 120 Students from 11 special training, education, and rehabilitation subclasses were investigated cytogenetically for determining the contribution of chromosomal abnormalities to mild mental retardation. 23 of the 120 children (19%) had chromosomal abnormalities: thirteen cases a classical trisomy 21 (the male:female ratio was 9:4), three a balanced autosomal reciprocal translocation, one a pericentric inversion of chromosome 9, and six fragile-X syndrome (The male:female ratio was 5:1).

As part of a project to study the possible impact of environmental change on health in southeastern Turkey, we evaluated sandfly species diversity, abundance, and habitat associations in an urban area where cutaneous leishmaniasis was undergoing epidemic re-emergence.
