Permanent circulatory support systems are required for patients in whom myocardial damage is irreversible and cardiac transplantation is not possible. Two systems are described which provide long term circulatory support: the left ventricular assist system and the total artificial heart. A serological study of 433 university students in various health care professions revealed levels of susceptibility of 2-7% for measles, 0-4% for mumps, 6-17% for poliomyelitis and a particularly disquieting 13-23% for rubella. At the University of Alberta Hospital between 1950 and 1988, 17 patients who had a diagnosis of carotid body tumour were seen; 15 of them were followed up for an average of 8 years (range from 1 to 38 years). In 14 patients the tumour was removed surgically. There were no operative deaths and no strokes occurred. The most frequent complication was cranial nerve deficit. The present study forms a part of a thirteen-year longitudinal study of mental health and examines how university-educated men and women have adapted to an average environment. There is little data concerning failures in spinal anaesthesia. A retrospective analysis of 337 spinal anaesthesias performed in a teaching hospital gave a 9.8% failure rate. Umbilical arterial and venous blood gas indices of 11 triplet pregnancies were reviewed. Ten sets of triplets were delivered by cesarean section and one set was delivered vaginally. Fine needle thyroid aspiration (FNTA) as a diagnostic tool of thyroid disease was started at the University District Hospital (UDH) in 1983. FNTA was performed in 54 willing patients from December 1984 through December 1985. If no medical contraindications existed, thyroid surgery was recommended in order to assess diagnostic accuracy. In the last ten years, 120 patients were admitted to our clinic with empyema. Empyema and effusion have been investigated for pathogenesis. Microbiologic studies of pleural aspiration fluid showed that Staphylococcus aureus was the most common pathogen, found in 44 patients (36.7 percent). A continuous range of wedge angles can be generated using wedged and unwedged beams in different proportions. However, this may pose difficulty in treatment planning since the planners will have to work with twice as many beams to achieve a desirable dose distribution.
