Sleep-related eye symptoms and their potential for identifying driver sleepiness.

The majority of individuals appear to have insight into their own sleepiness, but there is some evidence that this does not hold true for all, for example treated patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. Identification of sleep-related symptoms may help drivers determine their sleepiness, eye symptoms in particular show promise. Sixteen participants completed four motorway drives on two separate occasions. Drives were completed during daytime and night-time in both a driving simulator and on the real road. Ten eye symptoms were rated at the end of each drive, and compared with driving performan

Effects of sleep hours and fatigue on performance in laparoscopic surgery simulators.

BACKGROUND: Studies on a virtual reality simulator have demonstrated that sleep-deprived residents make more errors. Work-hour restrictions were implemented, among other reasons, to ensure enough sleep time for residents. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of sleep time, perceived fatigue, and experience on surgical performance. We hypothesized that performance would decrease with less sleep and fatigue, and that experienced surgeons would perform better than less experienced surgeons despite sleep deprivation and fatigue. METHODS: Twenty-two surgical residents and attendin

Source retrieval is not properly differentiated from object retrieval in early schizophrenia: an fMRI study using virtual reality.

Source memory, the ability to identify the context in which a memory occurred, is impaired in schizophrenia and has been related to clinical symptoms such as hallucinations. The neurobiological underpinnings of this deficit are not well understood. Twenty-five patients with recent onset schizophrenia (within the first 4.5 years of treatment) and twenty-four healthy controls completed a source memory task. Participants navigated through a 3D virtual city, and had 20 encounters of an object with a person at a place. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed during a subsequent forced-c

Training software using virtual-reality technology and pre-calculated effective dose data.

This paper describes the development of a software package, called VR Dose Simulator, which aims to provide interactive radiation safety and ALARA training to radiation workers using virtual-reality (VR) simulations. Combined with a pre-calculated effective dose equivalent (EDE) database, a virtual radiation environment was constructed in VR authoring software, EON Studio, using 3-D models of a real nuclear power plant building. Models of avatars representing two workers were adopted with arms and legs of the avatar being controlled in the software to simulate walking and other postures. Colli

Intercepting real and simulated falling objects: what is the difference?

The use of virtual reality is nowadays common in many studies in the field of human perception and movement control, particularly in interceptive actions. However, the ecological validity of the simulation is often taken for granted without having been formally established. If participants were to perceive the real situation and its virtual equivalent in a different fashion, the generalization of the results obtained in virtual reality to real life would be highly questionable. We tested the ecological validity of virtual reality in this context by comparing the timing of interceptive actions

Temporal classification of multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy signals of motor imagery for developing a brain-computer interface.

There has been an increase in research interest for brain-computer interface (BCI) technology as an alternate mode of communication and environmental control for the disabled, such as patients suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), brainstem stroke and spinal cord injury. Disabled patients with appropriate physical care and cognitive ability to communicate with their social environment continue to live with a reasonable quality of life over extended periods of time. Near-infrared spectroscopy is a non-invasive technique which utilizes light in the near-infrared range (700 to 1000

Virtual reality exposure therapy for the treatment of fear of flying: a controlled investigation.

Forty-five participants who refused to fly during a screening test and who also met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for specific phobia, agoraphobia, or panic disorder with agoraphobia were randomly assigned to 5 sessions of either virtual reality exposure (VRE) or attention-placebo group treatment (GT). At posttreatment, 65% of VRE participants and 57% of GT participants flew during a test flight. Both groups showed significant improvement following treatment on standardized self-report measures of flight anxiety, with a better outcome for the VRE group on 4 of

Real-time monitoring of brain activity in patients with specific phobia during exposure therapy, employing a stereoscopic virtual environment.

Exposure therapy is a behavioral technique that is reported to be the most effective, long-lasting treatment for patients suffering from specific phobia. During the performance in enclosed spaces, the patients show a strong psychophysiological response to the phobic stimulus that is normally avoided. This psychophysiological response changes characteristically during the course of exposure. We implemented an electroencephalographic monitoring focusing on event-related potentials to resolve the modulation of preattentive information processing by the anxiety state of the subject. Therefore, mis

Exploration-based feedback for BCI training: a case study with an adolescent with paraplegia.

PURPOSE: Brain-computer interface (BCI) inefficiency limits clinical utilization of BCIs, as many users struggle to produce consistent machine-recognizable electroencephalography (EEG) patterns for reliable control. While training can improve BCI performance for most users, the required duration and intensity may hinder BCI accessibility. Prior BCI and motor learning research suggests that feedback enabling efficient exploration of different task strategies may enhance training. METHODS: An eight-session BCI training case study was completed with an adolescent participant with paraplegia. To

Identifying EEG biomarkers of sense of embodiment in virtual reality: insights from spatio-spectral features.

The Sense of Embodiment (SoE) refers to the subjective experience of perceiving a non-biological body part as one's own. Virtual Reality (VR) provides a powerful platform to manipulate SoE, making it a crucial factor in immersive human-computer interaction. This becomes particularly relevant in Electroencephalography (EEG)-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), especially motor imagery (MI)-BCIs, which harness brain activity to enable users to control virtual avatars in a self-paced manner. In such systems, a strong SoE can significantly enhance user engagement, control accuracy, and the over

Computerized technologies informing cardiac catheterization and guiding coronary intervention.

Advances in image processing and computer hardware have enabled the development of user-friendly software which operate in real-time and can be used in the catheterization laboratory to facilitate percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The two dimensional-(2D) quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) systems that have traditionally been used to assess lesion severity have been replaced by 3D-QCA systems, enabling more reliable evaluation of vessel geometry and lesion dimensions. This also allows 3D reconstruction of coronary bifurcation anatomy and generation of models that can be processed

Federated healthcare record server--the Synapses paradigm.

The delivery of healthcare relies on the sharing of patient information between those who are providing for the care of the patient and this information is increasingly being expressed in terms of a 'record'. Further, it is desirable that these records are available in electronic form as Electronic HealthCare Records. As it is likely that patient records or parts of records will be stored in many different information systems and in the form of disparate record architectures, uniform access to patient records would be problematic. This paper presents an overview of the Synapses computing envir

Clinical Usability Evaluation of CT Work Systems: A Narrative Review and Socio-Technical Implementation Framework.

Computed tomography (CT) services are commonly evaluated using image quality, radiation dose, and equipment uptime. These metrics, however, do not establish whether CT work systems can be used safely, efficiently, and consistently across clinical information flows. This review synthesizes usability standards, human factors concepts, and radiology informatics evidence to support clinical evaluation of CT work systems. The scope included scanner interfaces, RIS/PACS/EMR links, dose monitoring tools, protocol repositories, and workflow logs. We conducted a transparent narrative review using targe

Development and clinical usability assessment of a web-based AI platform for automated echocardiography analysis.

BACKGROUND: Echocardiography is the cornerstone of cardiovascular diagnosis, yet its manual interpretation is labor-intensive and prone to inter-observer variability. While Deep Learning (DL) offers expert-level potential, existing models struggle with clinical generalization due to domain shifts and are often limited to single-view analysis, failing to provide the comprehensive assessment required in real-world practice. OBJECTIVES: To overcome these limitations, this study aimed to design, develop, and clinically evaluate EchoAI, a secure, browser-based Clinical Decision Support System to b

A Visual Explorer for Retrospective Trajectories in Children Following Heart Surgery.

Children after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass are susceptible to a variety of complications and poor outcomes, e.g., acute kidney injury or infection. Postoperative monitoring in children is a complex process, characterized by frequent interventions, age-varying reference ranges, different data sources, among other factors. Visual analysis of retrospective data could offer significant clinical value by improving understanding of trajectories and potential factors for complications. Therefore, we aim to create an interactive visualization tool to assist in exploration of retrospect

Development of a Virtual Reality Software for Upper Limb Physical Therapy in Pediatric Patients: Exploration of Pain, Motivation, Difficulty, and Acceptability Perceptions.

The physical rehabilitation of upper limb motor impairments in pediatric patients is often hindered by monotony, lack of motivation, and discomfort associated with traditional therapy methods. Although previous studies have shown that immersive virtual reality (VR) can help alleviate these issues by offering interactive environments and game-based tasks that make exercises more engaging, enjoyable, and distracting from pain, many have relied on commercial applications not initially designed for therapeutic use. As a result, children may quickly disengage or feel frustrated when tasks are not a
