[Effects of color visual background on nystagmus components].

The paper deals with the problem of vestibular-visual interactions. It was found that color background has a marked influence on nystagmus components depending on the spectral characteristics. Yellow-green background is recommended as optimal in the performance of the rotation test. Patients with vestibulopathy can benefit from wearing yellow-green glasses in every day life. In patients with Meniere's disease and cochleovestibular neuritis color background produced specific changes in the principal parameters of the nystagmus.

[Clinical studies on the furosemide VOR test].

In order to detect vestibular endolymphatic hydrops, the directional preponderance of the VOR gain (VOR-DP%) during sinusoidal rotation (freq. 0.1Hz; Amp. 120deg) was calculated and compared between pre- and post-intravenous injections of furosemide (20mg). Abnormal changes in VOR-DP% (> = 10%) from the pre-injection level were referred to as positive in this furosemide VOR test (FVOR). The following results were obtained from this study. (1) Positive responses were obtained in 31 of 61 (51%) patients with definite Meniere's disease, in 11 of 21 (52%) patients with delayed endolymphatic hydrop

[Significance of comparing the results of caloric and vestibulometric rotation tests].

The use of modified, less laborious, easier endured vestibulometric tests made it possible to facilitate diagnosing Menière's disease and neurinomas of the vestibular nerve. Comparison of nystagmometric findings recorded in the same patient during caloric and rotation tests using the diagnostic model of a bithermal test permitted some assumptions to be made in relation to the mechanisms for nystagmogenesis associated with pathologic states in ear labyrinth and vestibular portion craniocerebral (VIII) nerve. It is found that in the majority of Meniere's disease cases (61%) there is a decrease i

Functional brain activity in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) during galvanic vestibular stimulation reveals sensitization in the multisensory vestibular cortical network.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is often preceded by vestibular disorders. We applied galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) … redisposes to abnormal brain excitability by vestibular stimulation. All participants showed normal vestibular function tests on quantitative testing. GVS with different intensities was applied to 28 patients and 28 age- and gender-matched healthy participants (HC) in the scanner. After each stimulus, participants rated their perceived level of egomotion. GVS perception th …

Vestibular Perceptual Thresholds in Older Adults With and Without Age-related Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults with age-related hearing loss (ARHL) are at greater risk of falling and have greater mobility problems than older adults with normal hearing (NH). The underlying cause of these associations remains unclear. One possible reason is that age-related declines in the vestibular system could parallel those observed in the auditory system within the same individuals. Here, we compare the sensitivity of vestibular perceptual abilities (psychophysics), vestibular end-organ functioning (vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and video head impulse tests), and standing balance (po

Unterberger stepping test: a useful indicator of peripheral vestibular dysfunction?

Deviation of gait in a stepping test has been proposed as a useful indicator of peripheral labyrinthine dysfunction. A prospective study of 26 patients suspected of having uncompensated peripheral labyrinthine dysfunction and 49 normal patients with normal labyrinthine dysfunction showed no significant difference in performance of the Unterberger stepping test between patients with electronystagmographically significant canal paresis and those with normal vestibular function.

Electrocochleography and low-frequency harmonic acceleration in Meniere's disease.

We evaluated a series of 31 consecutive cases of Meniere's disease using electrocochleography (ECochG) and low-frequency harmonic acceleration (HA). The ECochG was positive for endolymphatic hydrops in 74% of the cases. A positive ECochG was strongly related to the degree of hearing loss. The results of harmonic acceleration were consistent with peripheral vestibular disorder in 80% of the cases. Five illustrative cases are also presented.

Vestibular stimulation for supranuclear gaze palsy: case report.

Gaze palsies following severe destruction or irritative lesions of the cerebral hemispheres are rare. This report describes a patient with supranuclear ophthalmoplegia secondary to stroke which was rapidly resolved by cold caloric vestibular stimulation. The patient had a severe infarction of the right cerebral hemisphere and had a fixed deviated gaze to the right 3 months after onset. Cold caloric vestibular stimulation was used in an attempt to evaluate brain stem integrity. Following three successive injections of cold water at OC-5C into the external auditory canal, the patient regained fu

[The perverted nystagmus (author's transl)].

The perverted nystagmus is a modification of the horizontal beating nystagmus (in classical caloric stimulation) by a vertical or rotatory mainly component. Experimentally, this disorder can be shown after an unilateral destroy of the superior or median vestibular nucleus. We show 32 cases of subjects with a perverted nystagmus. 75% of these subjects have a pure central disease and 20% a vestibular neuronitis. The perverted nystagmus had an upbeat component with the cold stimulation and downbeat component with the hot stimulation. It was accompanied by a spontaneous nystagmus in 66% (and 30% w

The Association Between Bell's Palsy and Vestibular Dysfunction in Relation to IgG Antibodies to Neurotropic Viruses.

Background/Objectives: The aetiology of Bell's palsy remains unclear and is typically diagnosed by exclusion. This study investigated the potential role of neurotropic viruses and explored the relationship between facial nerve impairment and vestibular dysfunction to improve the understanding of the condition. Methods: Antibodies against herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) were assessed using ELISA. Vestibular function was evaluated through computerised videonystagmography, rotatory chair, and clinical vestibulospinal assessments. Facial nerve lesion localisation was de

Vestibular neurectomy for dizziness after head trauma. A review of 28 patients.

28 patients with dizziness after head trauma were treated by vestibular neurectomy. Comparisons between the results of surgery and preoperative symptoms and findings showed that the best results were achieved in patients with episodic true vertigo and profound hearing loss. Patients who suffered from constant unsteadiness and/or postural vertigo usually improved, if both audiological and vestibular tests had shown clear pathology. Neurectomy gave poor results if functional tests had shown no pathology or reduced vestibular reaction only. The results support the view that in patients with post-
