Diagnosis of Patients Presenting with Vertigo, Headache, and Epileptic Seizure: Evaluating Vestibular Patients by Using Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential and Auditory Middle Latency Responses in the Clinical Setting.

Migraine and vertigo are common complaints seen in clinical practice, and in a few such cases, we also find epileptic manifestations, including migraine-triggered seizures. Currently, patients presenting with vertigo and headache are diagnosed according to established diagnostic criteria for Meniere's disease, vestibular migraine, or vestibular migraine/Meniere's disease overlapping syndrome. In addition to using those diagnostic criteria and the patient's history, cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential and auditory middle latency responses are useful tools to better understand the phys

Effects of Age and Middle Ear on the Frequency Tuning of the cVEMP and oVEMP.

BACKGROUND: Upward shift in the air conducted (AC) frequency tuning of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) as an effect of aging is hypothesized to be due to the microstructural stiffening changes in the inner ear. However, with an AC stimulus, it may be possible that the shift in the frequency tuning of VEMPs as an effect of aging may also be due to contributions from the middle ear. PURPOSE: The main aim of this study was to examine the effects of age on the frequency tuning of the cervical VEMP (cVEMP) and ocular VEMP (oVEMP) and determine the role of middle ear transmission char

Galvanic vestibular stimulation-induced activation of C1 neurons in medulla oblongata protects against acute lung injury.

Autonomic nerves, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, control the immune system along with their physiological functions. On the peripheral side, the interaction between the splenic sympathetic nerves and immune cells is important for the anti-inflammatory effects. However, the central mechanism underlying these anti-inflammatory effects remains unclear. C1 neurons respond to stressors and subsequently determine the outflow of the autonomic nervous system. We have previously shown that C1 neurons protect against acute kidney injury and found a signaling connection between per

In Vivo Localization of the Human Velocity Storage Mechanism and Its Core Cerebellar Networks by Means of Galvanic-Vestibular Afternystagmus and fMRI.

Humans are able to estimate head movements accurately despite the short half-life of information coming from our inner ear motion sensors. The observation that the central angular velocity estimate outlives the decaying signal of the semicircular canal afferents led to the concept of a velocity storage mechanism (VSM). The VSM can be activated via visual and vestibular modalities and becomes manifest in ocular motor responses after sustained stimulation like whole-body rotations, optokinetic or galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). The VSM has been the focus of many computational modelling ap

Evaluation of Vestibular Function in Diagnosis of Vestibular Schwannomas.

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign tumors of the vestibular nerve. The common first symptoms are hearing loss and tinnitus, followed by imbalance, vertigo, and facial nerve involvement. The subjective symptoms of VS patients are not consistent with the severity of vestibular lesions and the results of vestibular tests, which often interfere with clinicians' diagnoses. Thus, the main screening and diagnostic methods for VS are audiometry and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ignoring the evaluation of vestibular function at the source of pathological lesions. With the development and improv

A new method with an explant culture of the utricle for assessing the influence of exposure to low-frequency noise on the vestibule.

Health risks attributed to low-frequency noise (LFN) exposure are a serious global issue. Therefore, the development of a method for a prevention based upon risk assessments for LFN is important. Previously in vivo exposure of mice to LFN at 100 Hz, 95 dB for 1 hr produced imbalance with breakage of the otoconial membrane, which covers hair cells as well as impaired activity of hair cells in the vestibule. However, methods for inhibition of LFN-mediated imbalance have not been developed. At present, there are no apparent techniques available with in vitro or ex vivo assessments to evaluate LFN

Electrical Vestibular Stimulation in Humans: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: In patients with bilateral vestibulopathy, the regular treatment options, such as medication, surgery, and/or vestibular rehabilitation, do not always suffice. Therefore, the focus in this field of vestibular research shifted to electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) and the development of a system capable of artificially restoring the vestibular function. Key Message: Currently, three approaches are being investigated: vestibular co-stimulation with a cochlear implant (CI), EVS with a vestibular implant (VI), and galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS). All three applications show

Gravity modulates behaviour control strategy.

Human behaviour is a trade-off between exploitation of familiar resources and exploration of new ones. In a challenging environment-such as outer space-making the correct decision is vital. On Earth, gravity is always there, and is an important reference for behaviour. Thus, altered gravitational signals may affect behaviour control strategies. Here, we investigated whether changing the body's orientation to the gravitational vector would modulate the balance between routine and novel behaviour. Participants completed a random number generation task while upright or supine. We found decreased

Physiological assesment of vestibular function and toxicity in humans and animals.

Physiological methods that can be similarly recorded in humans and animals have a major role in sensory toxicology, as they provide a bridge between human sensory perception data and the molecular and cellular data obtained in animal studies. Vestibular toxicity research lags well behind other sensory systems in many aspects, including the availability of methods for functional assessment in animals that could be robustly translated to human significance. Here we review the methods available for the assessment of vestibular function in both humans and laboratory animals, with an emphasis on th
