PURPOSE: To investigate whether hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) leads to disability in the upper extremity or deficit in quality of life (QoL) using validated questionnaire tools, and to establish whether these effects are related to the Stockholm Workshop Staging (SWS).
METHOD: This was a postal cross-sectional questionnaire study with a 50% response rate. Four hundred and forty-four males, who had been diagnosed and staged according to the SWS were sent the Disability in the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) and the SF-36v2 QoL questionnaires.

Noise immissions with predominant low frequency sound components may exert considerably disturbing effects in dwellings. This applies in particular to sounds which are excitated by transmission of structure-borne noise, and to low frequency sounds emitted by ventilators. The vibration sense was tested by the method suggested by the author in 119 patients with Schmorl's bodies of the 4th-5th lumbar vertebrae who were subjected to operation. Vibration sense was found to be disturbed in 90% of patients. The test for vibration sense in lumbar osteochondrosis may be used for exact identification of the involved root and the level of the disc herniation.
