A controlled trial of fortification of crystalline monosodium glutamate (MSG) with 810 micrograms RE vitamin A/g was undertaken in an area of endemic vitamin A deficiency in Indonesia. Powdered MSG was used to mask the yellow color of the vitamin A. Fortified MSG was marketed through ordinary channels in five villages in the program area and five nearby villages served as the control area. An experiment was carried out with 100 broiler birds of the Leghorn breed, aged 20 days. The birds were divided into groups and were given various amounts of methionine--0,5, 2, and 3 per cent with the basic standard mixture. The clinical signs of methionine intoxication were followed up--drowsiness, weakness in the legs, opisthotonus, and twisting of the neck (torticollis) alons with the loss of equilibrium. Serial 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations were measured in long-stay geriatric patients treated with vitamin D. Comparison between a treatment and a control group showed that a daily dose of 500 IU vitamin D produced a significant increase in 25-OHD levels by two months. The supplement had a striking effect when the initial 25-OHD level was low and very little effect when it was high. 25-OHD levels in subjects on 2000 IU vitamin D daily were only marginally higher than those in subjects on 500 IU. After oral consumption of 150 000 U vitamin A-palmitate the serum of eight healthy men was hourly determined for vitamin A-concentration. Rapidly ascending to a maximum within three to four hours the concentration returned exponentially to its normal fasting level after 24 hours. The curve could be adapted to the BATEMAN-function. The velocity constants k1 and k2 were equal except for one case. These results were opposite to earlier results of patients with psoriasis vulgaris.

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: In this study we aimed to measure the activity of catalase, which is an antioxidant enzyme, the concentrations of some trace elements and heavy metals, and vitamin A, D and E levels in serum samples of patients with hydatidiform mole, normal pregnancies and healthy non pregnant women.

The investigation was conducted on provision with vitamins C and B1 of Kyiv inhabitants limited contingent at spring period and efficiency of complex vitamin-mineral preparations in normalisation of the vitamins level in blood of human-subjects. The deficit of vitamin C in 54% and vitamin B1 in 18.5% of the investigated people was revealed. Supradin gave the best results among rest preparations ("Centrum", "Vitrum", "Duovit", "Multi-Tabs") in the normalization of the level of vitamin C and biologically-active form of thiamine (thiamindiphosphate) in the blood of investigated people.
