Lexical organization and phonological change in treatment.

Word frequency and neighborhood density are properties of lexical organization that differentially influence spoken-word recognition. This study examined whether these same properties also affect spoken-word production, particularly as related to children with functional phonological delays. The hypothesis was that differential generalization would be associated with a word's frequency and its neighborhood density when manipulated as input in phonological treatment. Using a multiple baseline across subjects design, 8 children (aged 3;10 to 5;4) were randomly enrolled in 1 of 4 experimental con

Why is "Red Cross" different from "Yellow Cross"?: a neuropsychological study of noun-adjective agreement within Italian compounds.

This study investigates the performance of two Italian nonfluent aphasic patients on noun-adjective agreement in compounds and in noun phrases. A completion, a reading, and a repetition task were administered. Results show that both patients were able to correctly inflect adjectives within compounds, but not in noun phrases. Moreover, they were sensitive to constituent order (noun-adjective vs adjective-noun) within noun phrases, but less so within compounds. These results suggest differential processing for compounds as compared to noun phrases: While the latter require standard morphosyntact

Changes on the stroop test following treatment: relation to word type, treatment condition, and treatment outcome among women with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in speed of information processing on a modification of the Stroop color-naming task following cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) and to evaluate whether changes are associated with word type, treatment condition, or treatment response. METHOD: Subjects were 98 women aged between 17 and 45 years with a current primary diagnosis of bulimia nervosa who were participating in a randomized clinical trial evaluating CBT. Data were available on all relevant variables for 98 women. Speed of information processing was assessed at pretreatment and posttreatment using a modif

Superadditive effects of multiple lesions in a connectionist architecture: implications for the neuropsychology of optic aphasia.

Neuropsychological disorders have traditionally been understood in terms of a focal lesion to a single component of a cognitive architecture. Optic aphasia (OA) defies explanation in this way. In OA, naming of visual stimuli is impaired in the absence of general visual agnosia or anomia. OA has been explained by positing multiple semantic systems or multiple functional pathways to visual naming. M. J. Farah (1990) instead sketched a parsimonious account based on multiple lesions--to pathways mapping visual input to semantic and semantics to naming responses--and the assumption that the effects

WISC-R stability and re-evaluation of learning-disabled students.

This study investigated the temporal stability of WISC-R IQ scores for learning-disabled subjects (N = 113). All study subjects were administered the WISC-R for an initial evaluation (M age = 8 years, 3 months) and a follow-up re-evaluation (M age = 11 years, 7 months). Pearson product-moment correlations yielded coefficients that were considerably lower than those previously reported: r = .55, p less than .001 for the Verbal IQs; r = .63, p less than .001 for the Performance IQs; and r = .58, p less than .001 for the Full Scale IQs. Results of t-test analyses indicated that only the Verbal IQ

Sublexical semantic decoding during incidental novel word learning in natural Chinese reading.

The majority of Chinese characters convey meaning explicitly via their semantic radical and studies investigating isolated character identification and character acquisition have shown them to be an important source of sublexical semantic information. However, to date, it is unclear whether Chinese readers recruit and utilize semantic cues from radicals when encountering, learning and representing entirely novel characters in natural reading - an important aspect of vocabulary growth. To address this question, we created sixteen semantic-phonetic compound single pseudo-character words as novel…

Rethinking the Origins of Cross-Language Effects: How Heard Verbs Influence Japanese- and English-Speaking Children's Attention to the Details of Actions.

Languages differ in how words carve up the world into categories, and these differences in lexical categories often influence how speakers interpret perceived events. Past research has shown that languages with a single and general word for one domain tend to cue attention more broadly than languages with multiple, more specific verbs. This supports the idea that the referential range of lexical categories-how broadly or narrowly a word applies-plays a major role in how heard words guide attention and shape interpretations of events. We tested the referential range hypothesis, measuring Japane

More like guidelines than hard rules: Bilinguals accept lexical overlap despite using mutual exclusivity.

Mutual exclusivity (ME), the tendency that young children have to select a novel object upon hearing a novel label, gives children a basis to select a referent for an unknown label. However, this strategy may not be relevant to bilinguals who learn multiple labels for most objects. Although previous research showed that bilinguals are better than monolinguals in accepting second labels for familiar objects, these studies explicitly labelled the familiar objects with a novel name, leaving open the question of whether children implicitly accept lexical overlap in ambiguous naming situation. We i

Deaf Children's Use of Mutual Exclusivity and Eye Gaze to Determine Word Meanings in American Sign Language.

When determining the meaning of new words, young children have a variety of cues available to them. Two types of such cues are referential attention (e.g., gaze and point cues), and lexical constraints, such as mutual exclusivity biases. This is likely also true for deaf children acquiring American Sign Language (ASL), however, the visual modality of the language and the variation in individual early language experience may affect the extent to which they prioritize these cues in ways that are different from hearing children acquiring spoken language. In the current study, we examined the rela

A Word-Learning Intervention Pilot Study Utilizing Principles of Retrieval- and Criterion-Based Learning for Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Vocabulary knowledge at school entry provides an essential foundation for academic and literacy learning. Thus, school entry is an important timepoint to support word learning by children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Retrieval-based training strategies support both learning and retention of words for individuals with DLD in lab-based research. Additionally, lab-based research with adults with typical development demonstrates that pairing retrieval- and criterion-based training strategies supports learning efficiency. Currently, it is unclear if retrieval- and criterion-…

Is procedural memory enhanced in Tourette syndrome? Evidence from a sequence learning task.

Procedural memory, which is rooted in the basal ganglia, underlies the learning and processing of numerous automatized motor and cognitive skills, including in language. Not surprisingly, disorders with basal ganglia abnormalities have been found to show impairments of procedural memory. However, brain abnormalities could also lead to atypically enhanced function. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a candidate for enhanced procedural memory, given previous findings of enhanced TS processing of grammar, which likely depends on procedural memory. We comprehensively examined procedural learning, from memo

'No daddy', 'A kind of daddy': words used by donor conceived children and (aspiring) parents to refer to the sperm donor.

Research has shown that the recipients of donor sperm can experience difficulties finding appropriate language to refer to the donor. Based on two qualitative analysis techniques, namely word count and empirical discourse analysis, we studied the words used to refer to the donor in heterosexual and lesbian (aspiring) parents and in donor conceived children. Findings show that the words used in these households are highly diverse and have at least four different interlinked functions: (1) to position the donor in relation to the nuclear family; (2) to safeguard the role of the social parent; (3

Bringing the Simple View of Reading to the clinic: Relationships between oral and written language skills in a clinical sample.

PURPOSE: The Simple View of Reading (SVR) predicts subtypes of reading disorder based on weaknesses in word recognition, listening comprehension, or both. This practice-based research study explores predictions of the SVR within a clinical practice setting. METHOD: The study is a retrospective analysis of 112 assessment records from school-aged children (aged 6.0-16.7) referred for speech-language evaluation. Available scores within four areas (listening comprehension, word recognition, reading comprehension, and oral expression) were extracted and then converted to composites. Composite scor

Orthographic learning in dyslexic Spanish children.

Reading fluency is one of the basic processes of learning to read. Children begin to develop fluency when they are able to form orthographic representations of words, which provide direct, smooth, and fast reading. Dyslexic children of transparent orthographic systems are mainly characterized by poor reading fluency (Cuetos & Suárez-Coalla 2009; Spinelli, De Luca, Di Filippo, Mancini, Martelli, & Zoccolotti, 2005; Wimmer, 1993). Therefore, the main problem for these children could be the difficulty in developing orthographic representations of the words they read. The aim of this study was to

The nature of the automatization deficit in Chinese children with dyslexia.

Clarifying whether automatization deficits constitute the primary causes or symptoms of developmental dyslexia, we focused on three critical issues of the dyslexic automatization deficit, namely universality, domain specificity, and severity. Thirty Chinese dyslexic children (mean age 10 years and 5 months), 30 chronological-age-, and 30 reading-level-matched children were tested in 4 areas of automaticity: motor, visual search, Stroop facilitation effects, and automatic word recognition. The results showed that the dyslexic children performed significantly worse than the CA-controls but not t

Dyslexic and typical-reading children use vowel digraphs as perceptual units in reading.

Digraphs are graphemes that are composed of two letters like the "ou" in "soup". We hypothesized that the serial-reading strategy of dyslexic readers might interfere with the processing of digraphs. We used a letter-detection task to compare the processing of vowel digraphs in dyslexic and typical-reading children. Both groups were found to be slower in detecting a letter within a vowel digraph than in detecting a letter of a single-letter grapheme. The slower response to target letters embedded in a digraph was position independent in both groups. We also found that dyslexic children did not

The dystonic child treated with deep brain stimulation: ICF reading of a high-tech approach.

PURPOSE: The available tools used to describe childhood dystonia tend to offer a monodimensional view of the person functioning, which may overlook significant changes induced by treatment. We applied the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) perspective to the description of the clinical picture of a dystonic child treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS) to get a more global representation of the treatment effect. METHOD: An 8-year-old child with secondary dystonia was selected within the institutional program for advanced treatment of pediatric dystonia

Entity/quality-based logical definitions for the human skeletal phenome using PATO.

This paper describes an approach to providing computer-interpretable logical definitions for the terms of the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) using PATO, the ontology of phenotypic qualities, to link terms of the HPO to the anatomic and other entities that are affected by abnormal phenotypic qualities. This approach will allow improved computerized reasoning as well as a facility to compare phenotypes between different species. The PATO mapping will also provide direct links from phenotypic abnormalities and underlying anatomic structures encoded using the Foundational Model of Anatomy, which w

Causes of death and associated conditions (Codac): a utilitarian approach to the classification of perinatal deaths.

A carefully classified dataset of perinatal mortality will retain the most significant information on the causes of death. Such information is needed for health care policy development, surveillance and international comparisons, clinical services and research. For comparability purposes, we propose a classification system that could serve all these needs, and be applicable in both developing and developed countries. It is developed to adhere to basic concepts of underlying cause in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), although gaps in ICD prevent classification of perinatal dea
