Time course of VMN lesion effects on lordosis and proceptive behavior in female hamsters.

Previous studies suggest that ultrasound production by female hamsters is better able than other reproductive behaviors to recover from an initial drop caused by damage to the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMN). At the same time, few studies have examined the time course of such lesion effects. To remedy this, female hamsters were observed before and after control operations or VMN lesions. The behaviors considered were ultrasound production, lordosis, approach, and vaginal marking. Ultrasound production, lordosis, and approach were affected by lesions, permitting the description of the time cour

Universal scaling laws for hierarchical complexity in languages, organisms, behaviors and other combinatorial systems.

There are many complex systems in nature where components, or "words", are combined together to make expressions, or "sentences". Such combinatorial systems include: (1) human language, where sentences are composed of words; (2) bird vocalization, where songs are built from syllables; (3) organisms, where organism-expressions (e.g. the tonsil) are made out of cells; (4) behavioral repertoire, where mammalian behavior consists of a temporal arrangement of muscle contractions; (5) universities, where student academic degrees are comprised of departmental concentrations; and (6) electronic device

Injection of oxytocin into the medial preoptic-anterior hypothalamus increases ultrasound production by female hamsters.

Recent studies of hamsters have documented the facilitation of lordosis and other sociosexual responses by injections of oxytocin (OXT) into the medial preoptic area-anterior hypothalamus (MPOA-AH). These data suggest the regulation of social interaction and bonds by OXT. In turn, this suggests that OXT could act in the MPOA-AH to control other behaviors involved in the initiation or maintenance of social contact, including the ultrasonic vocalizations that female hamsters use to alert and attract potential mates. To test this possibility, we compared the ultrasound rates of 11 naturally estro

Selectivity in the responses of hamsters to conspecific vocalizations.

Lordosis responses by estrous hamsters were triggered by brief manual stimulation. Lordosis durations then were timed, as manual stimulation was discontinued, and subjects were exposed to tape-recordings of conspecific vocalizations reproduced at intensities of 0-60 dB SPL. Relative to the durations observed in the presence of ambient noise alone, recordings of stress-elicited screams failed to facilitate lordosis regardless of stimulus intensity. In contrast, ultrasounds by male or female hamsters did prolong lordosis, and to extents that were directly related to intensity but unrelated to th

Facilitation of lordosis by estradiol in the mesencephalic central gray.

Ovariectomized female hamsters received unilateral implants of estradiol aimed at the mesencephalic central gray (MCG). Postoperative levels of lordosis and ultrasonic vocalization were used to evaluate implant effects on sexual receptivity and proceptivity. Females with large MCG implants showed higher levels of receptivity than females with similar implants at control sites. In addition, females with small MCG implants showed little receptivity while the implant served as the sole source of estrogen, but diverged from controls by showing elevated receptivity during supplemental treatment wit

Relationship Value, Emotion, and Uncertainty Shape Conflict-Resolution Communication in a Wild Primate.

Studying how nonhuman primates tailor signals and behavioral patterns to resolve ingroup conflicts provides insight into the evolution of communicative and behavioral complexity in conflict management. Here, we explore how, in wild geladas, primates with a uniquely rich vocal-visual repertoire, aggressors and victims take into account relationship value, perceived risk and uncertainty, emotional dynamics, and audience and external factors when producing nonaggressive signals after conflicts. We found that reconciliation in the study groups occurred rapidly, was mainly initiated by aggressors,

Video: transcervical videoscopic esophageal dissection in minimally invasive esophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) may involve video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for mediastinal esophageal dissection. Usually, VATS requires single-lung ventilation and has associated cardiopulmonary morbidity [1-3]. Alternatively, transhiatal dissection can be performed, although its complications include vocal cord palsy [4], cardiac arrythmias [5], and increased bleeding [5, 6], the latter associated with mortality after esophagectomy [2]. Therefore, the feasibility of MIE using transcervical videoscopic esophageal dissection (TVED) in swine was investigated. A s

Radiographic tracheal and carina distension is associated with diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether radiographic carina distension is a potential diagnostic indicator of laryngeal paralysis (LP) in dogs. METHODS: Dogs diagnosed with LP on upper airway examination at a veterinary specialty hospital were retrospectively identified if they underwent orthogonal thoracic radiographic evaluation between January 2013 and January 2024. Each case was matched 1:1 with similar patients without underlying cardiorespiratory disease that underwent orthogonal thoracic radiographic evaluation. The thoracic inlet (TI), intrathoracic (TT), and carina tracheal diameters (CD) as

Implementation of a prototype dynamic laryngoplasty system in standing sedated horses provided arytenoid abduction control at seven days postoperatively.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate a prototype dynamic laryngoplasty system (DLPS) in horses; a feasibility study. ANIMALS: 7 healthy Standardbred adult horses. METHODS: This was an in vivo experimental study. Horses had a standing surgical procedure to induce complete laryngeal hemiplegia, which was subsequently treated using the dynamic laryngoplasty system (DLPS). Activation of the DLPS was achieved using an injection port exiting through the skin (n = 2) or a subcutaneous injection port (n = 5). For each horse, endoscopic examinations of the upper respiratory tract were performed preoperatively, intrao

Predicting 3D soft tissue dynamics from 2D imaging using physics informed neural networks.

Tissue dynamics play critical roles in many physiological functions and provide important metrics for clinical diagnosis. Capturing real-time high-resolution 3D images of tissue dynamics, however, remains a challenge. This study presents a hybrid physics-informed neural network algorithm that infers 3D flow-induced tissue dynamics and other physical quantities from sparse 2D images. The algorithm combines a recurrent neural network model of soft tissue with a differentiable fluid solver, leveraging prior knowledge in solid mechanics to project the governing equation on a discrete eigen space.

Custom Laser-Cut Silastic® Implants for Type I Thyroplasty in a Preclinical Model.

This study aimed to produce customized silicone elastomer implants of varied size and shape for optimization of type I thyroplasty procedures in a rabbit model. Computer-aided design models of different implant designs were designed and used to program laser cutting of a medical-grade Silastic® sheet. Laser-cut implants were produced rapidly and cost-efficiently. Surgical implantation demonstrated vocal fold medialization and phonation in 5 test subjects. This technique may provide a low-cost alternative or adjunct method to hand-carving or commercial implants.

3D Reconstruction of Phonatory Glottal Shape and Volume: Effects of Neuromuscular Activation.

INTRODUCTION: Although phonatory glottal posture and airflow pulse shape affect voice quality, studies to date have been limited by visualization of vocal fold (VF) vibration from a superior view. We performed a 3D reconstruction of VF vibratory motion during phonation from a medial view and assessed the glottal volume waveform and resulting acoustics as a function of neuromuscular stimulation. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine hemilarynx phonation. METHODS: Across 121 unique combinations of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation, the hemilarynx was exc

Elective cricothyrotomy in a dog with transient laryngeal paralysis secondary to Australian paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) envenomation.

The tube cricothyrotomy (CTT) has recently been introduced to small animal medicine as a viable surgical airway access procedure; however, there are no reports documenting its clinical use. The author's objective is to describe the clinical application, complications, and management of an elective CTT in a dog. Furthermore, the characteristics of CTT that may be clinically advantageous over temporary tube tracheostomy (TT) will be discussed. A 2-year-old female spayed German shepherd dog required mechanical ventilation (MV) due to unsustainable work of breathing as a result of tick paralysis a

Effect of doxepin on quality of life in Labradors with laryngeal paralysis: A double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal paralysis commonly affects older Labrador retrievers. Currently, dogs with severe disease require surgical intervention, most commonly arytenoid lateralization. Anecdotally, doxepin has been proposed to help dogs with laryngeal paralysis. HYPOTHESIS: Doxepin will improve quality of life measures assessed by owners of Labrador retrievers with laryngeal paralysis not requiring emergency surgery. ANIMALS: Twenty-two Labrador retrievers with laryngeal paralysis. METHODS: Dogs were randomized to receive doxepin (3-5 mg/kg q12h PO) or placebo for 28 days. Owners completed qu

Dehydration and Estrous Staging in the Rat Larynx: an in vivo Prospective Investigation.

OBJECTIVE: This novel study sought to untangle the association between hydration state and the estrous cycle in the vocal folds, since the voice is reported to negatively change in speakers during the estrous cycle and with dehydration. We hypothesized that there would be alterations in vocal fold tissue morphology depending on hydration state and that these changes would vary with the estrous cycle. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, in vivo study design. METHODS: Female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 30) were used in this study. Sixteen rats were systemically dehydrated to an average of 10% reduction in

Glottal opening and closing events investigated by electroglottography and super-high-speed video recordings.

Previous research has suggested that the peaks in the first derivative (dEGG) of the electroglottographic (EGG) signal are good approximate indicators of the events of glottal opening and closing. These findings were based on high-speed video (HSV) recordings with frame rates 10 times lower than the sampling frequencies of the corresponding EGG data. The present study attempts to corroborate these previous findings, utilizing super-HSV recordings. The HSV and EGG recordings (sampled at 27 and 44 kHz, respectively) of an excised canine larynx phonation were synchronized by an external TTL signa

[Optical coherence tomography in the diagnosis of vocal folds].

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new, non-invasive method for investigating biological tissue, with a beam penetration of up to 3 mm. In this study, OCT was used on porcine and human larynxes. The porcine vocal folds were assigned to defined areas and examined by OCT followed by traditional histomorphological analysis. We were able to validate this new method by demonstrating that both OCT and the histological assays showed a clear demarcation of the epithelium mucosae from the deeper layers. OCT application to human vocal folds delivered same results. The current standard procedure for

The effect of cricothyroid muscle action on the relation between subglottal pressure and fundamental frequency in an in vivo canine model.

The relation between subglottal pressure (Ps) and fundamental frequency (F0) in phonation was investigated with an in vivo canine model. Direct muscle stimulation was used in addition to brain stimulation. This allowed the Ps-F0 slope to be quantified in terms of cricothyroid muscle activity. Results showed that, for ranges of 0-2 mA constant current stimulation of the cricothyroid muscle, the Ps-F0 slope ranged from 10 Hz/kPa to 60 Hz/kPa. These results were compared to similar slopes obtained in a previous study on excised larynges in which the vocal fold length was varied instead of cricoth

Correspondence of electroglottographic closed quotient to vocal fold impact stress in excised canine larynges.

The purpose of this study was to explore the possible use of the electroglottographic closed quotient (EGG CQ) as a noninvasive estimate of vocal fold impact stress (SI). Two excised canine larynges were used. Each larynx was mounted and vocal fold oscillation was induced using a humidified air source. Twenty-seven experimental trials were conducted for each larynx. Trials involved variations in vocal process gap, vocal fold elongation, and subglottic pressure. Simultaneous measures were made of vocal fold SI at the midpoint of the membranous vocal folds, and EGG CQ (dimensionless ratio). The
